ALASKA MOUSE PATTERNS

Alaska mouse patterns can be fished in place through out the summer. Rainbow Trout on mouse patterns? This is awesome! Trout need as many calories as they can consume in the short summers of Alaska. I’ve seen 10 inch fish take a size 4 mouse pattern, ferociously. Try dead drifting, swinging, slow or fast strips and you will be sure to have a rainbow on a mouse pattern before long.

Tying this fly weedless is also a good idea. You can then get your mouse into the brush and retrieve it out without worrying as much about loosing it.

I watched my good friend Jeff Murray (www.murraysflyshop.com) raise at least 15 fish on this mouse pattern in the first half hour of this float. This fish was caught and released in the fall but you can be sure that it is just as productive in the spring. Note that not all rivers will produce trout on mouse patterns but most rivers in Alaska will with the right conditions. I hope to hear stories of you catching rainbow trout on mouse patterns too! KENAI RIVER DRY FLY FISHING

THERE CAN BE SOME VERY GOOD KENAI RIVER DRY FLY FISHING. June is a great month to be in the middle of some great caddis hatches in Alaska. Smaller rivers and lakes on the Kenai peninsula have been the most productive when I am look for Rainbow trout on dry flies. Also look at the side channels of the Kenai river, there are some great place to find some rainbow trout eager to take a dry fly. Once the salmon show up in good numbers you can fish a dry fly all day long and never have a trout look up. When you do find fish looking up make sure you have a few caddis patterns to fall back on.

I’m a huge fan of peacock hurl, I mix it into most of my favorite patterns.

Brown or olive caddis patterns in a size 12 is a go to for us in June. KENAI RIVER OVERNIGHT TRIP

KENAI RIVER RAINBOW TROUT

When the river starts to rise with melt off and the Kenai river Rainbow trout season opens (june 11th) don’t hesitate to add a sink tip line into your arsenal. I prefer to fly fish a 250 grain sink tip line and a six weight rod for getting down to those big fish. Leeches, clousers, woolly boogers, and muddler minnows should get you into fish. Swing them down and across, keeping them as deep as you can. Also, don’t overlook the slower water in early morning and late afternoon. Fish slow and thorough! If you find that the fish are just not responding switch up to the old flesh fly and keep it in the thick cover. Flesh gets caught up in overhangs, and washed back into the river with rising water throughout the spring. FLY TYING KENAI RIVER

FLY TYING KENAI RIVER PATTERNS: This is just one of the patterns I keep in my box for fishing the kenai river. Often times I will switch my fly every few minutes until I find something that the fish are really keying in on! This particular pattern has landed many fish for me on the kenai river and many other rivers across the country. fly-tying-trout-003

Rainbow trout on the the Kenai River and other system in Alaska feed on leech patterns aggressively in the spring. Early trout season on the Kenai river can be a streamer fisherman’s paradise!There are many leech pattern available that will work as well as this one. Bunny leeches are fast and fun to tie. For this particular fly you will need: -black zonker strip -black dubbing -black hackle -copper flash -lead body wrap, if desired -lead eyes, if desired I chose a size 6 streamer hook and a small set of lead eyes for this fly. WINTER WEATHER

With extremely cold winter weather hanging around it is hard to find any moving water at all. I usually can find windows of opportunity to fish year round on the kenai river and this year it is looking like fishing will be over for a while. We saw -25 today at the house in anchorage. burrrrrrrrrrrrrrr I think it is even to cold to ski and way to cold for Rainbow trout fishing but we will see what happens next week. Winter Kenai River Rainbow Trout Fishing

A few things to keep in mind for Winter Kenai River Rainbow Trout Fishing. 1, watch the weather patterns and fronts that are moving through. If it is calling for a high of 30 degrees it is probably going to be warm enough to keep the ice off the guides for a few hours. 2, fish slow and thorough concentrating in good, producing runs. Fish will concentrate and follow the food source. 3, stay warm, Slow down and take the time to keep yourself warm. Sometimes I find myself wade fishing too long and needing more time to warm up. 4, be smart, carry extra cloths, first aid kit, extra hand warmers and lots of extra gloves. Wet hands will make your whole body cold, try a hook and release tool to keep your hands dry. Remember that removing fish from the water in below freezing temperatures will freeze there gills almost immediately. I know that I have been bad for this in years past like many folks but it is something that is very important and is our responsibility in helping protect our resource. Kenai River Rainbow Trout Fishing In October

Kenai River Rainbow Trout Fishing in October is a great time to get out and experience the river. The crowds are starting to dwindle and the water levels usually are doing the same. The weather can get cold and snow will be in the forecast more than likely but the fish will be there. Being new to fly fishing, Sam handled this fish like a pro. Great Job! When the tempuratures drop we will not remove the fish from the water so there isn’t as high of a mortality rate. Please respect this and we will do our best to get a quality picture of you catch. If we plan on harvesting a silver salmon this rule doesn’t apply! Grayling are not a common fish in the Kenai river but we do catch one every once in a while. Today was the exception, we caught one 8″ arctic grayling today. Grayling will move into the kenai river later in the season to find food before the long winter sets in. October fishing on the kenai river can be very productive. Silver salmon are spawning now and the Rainbow trout move right behind them to feed. Alaska Top Water Rainbow Trout Fishing

Under the right conditions and timing you can find some great Alaska top water rainbow trout fishing. From Dry flies in small streams and lakes to big mouse patterns on the Kenai and other rivers in the state. June proves to be a good month on the Kenai Peninsula for this and I have some great streams in other parts of the state that can provide top water rainbow trout fishing. It is my goal to explore at least one new river every year. This year we chose Lake Creek to see if it was worth adding to the arsenal. At the begining of the trip we were able to get plenty of rainbows taking mouse patterns which made the trip worth while right then and there. We had high muddy water for the whole trip and still the river produced a good number of rainbow trout, grayling, and silver salmon . On our 60 mile adventure through white water, rocks and canyons. We found ourselves thinking that we need to show this to you. If you are interested in a 6 day 5 night back country float I think we found a great adventure for you!
