Book a Guided Kenai River King Salmon Charter Today!
We offer Kenai River King Salmon Charter trips with both power boat and drift boat opportunities. Depending on how you would like to pursue these big fish! Starting in early May when the Kenai River is low we will make good use of the drift boat. This allows us to fish through the rocky runs and over the shallow gravel bars. As the river rises with rain and run off we will switch over to the power boat for ease of reworking runs. Drift boat fishing is offered upon request at this time, we will spend time on the seams of large eddies and softer runs. Both boats are effective and our guide service has them ready to go at all times. Our boats are clean and we maintained like our equipment. Fly fishing opportunities are offered but this big river is geared more towards conventional spin and casting tackle. Through June this is an artificial lure fishery only unless opened to bait early by fish and game. July marks the date of the bait opener unless again changed by fish and game. These laws are emergency ordered to opening or closings by fish and game depending on how the run is going. I have seen bait open in early June before and I have seen the whole season closed to bait before. Either way we are dialed in on pursuing these rod bending hard fighting fish and will do our best to put you in the action.
Guided Kenai river King salmon charter trips are 275.00$ plus tax per person. We can accommodate up to 4 people per boat and can handle larger groups if needed. We are taking bookings for guided king salmon trips now and look forward to spending a day or a week with you on the water. Give us a call at 907-382-6808 or contact us here on the site.
WWW.DRIFTINGONTHEFLY.COMThe KENAI RIVER is a complex and dynamic system, providing excellent habitat for fisheries. This excellent habitat helps produce lots of salmon, trout, and more. All five species of Pacific salmon return to the Kenai River every year, including Chinook (king salmon), coho (silver salmon), chum, pink, and sockeye salmon. Though the pink salmon only return in big numbers on even number years and there isn’t very many chum salmon that enter the Kenai River. Other fish species in the Kenai river drainage include rainbow trout, Dolly Varden, and arctic grayling. All of these species can be targeted in a guided fishing trip on the Kenai River or Kenai peninsula.Imagine floating down glacial blue waters, surrounded by snow capped mountains, forested lands, and possible wildlife around every bend of the river, all while waiting for the tremendous ‘take down’ on your rod by any one of the five salmon or other fish species. From peaceful and serene, to action packed and adrenaline rushing……this is what you will experience when your line goes down and everyone yells, “FISH ON!”. Once the fish is brought to the boat, your guide will help you cherish the memory by taking pictures of your epic catch with a backdrop of glacial waters and mountains.Every trip down the Kenai River, whether it’s in a drift boat or powerboat, is one of comfort and space. To help with those chilly mornings, your guide will have hot coffee to keep you warm. Headed to the Kenai Peninsula in search of a Guided Kasilof River King Salmon Fishing? Consider the Kasilof River a great option! This fishery is the located 12 mile from Soldotna Alaska and is the sister river to the Kenai River. It is also a drift boat only King Salmon fishery which means there are no motors allowed and pressure is way less than on the Kenai River, though popularity is growing every year.
The Kasilof river has two distinctive runs of King Salmon.
The First run of fish start to show up around the middle of May and usually peaks by the middle of June. These early run Kings will typically run between 20 and 30 pounds with an occasional fish weighing over 30 pounds. During the early season the river is much lower than it is in late June and July. It is still cold in the high country and the runoff isn’t as heavy yet. This is the time to come if you are looking to hook a King Salmon on the fly. As the water rises there is more glacier silt that clouds the river and less bank fishing opportunity to fly fish.
The second run of Kasilof River King Salmon start to show up near the end of June mixing in with the remainder of the first run fish and will keep coming in through the end of King salmon season. July 31st is the last day that we are allowed to target these fish. These fish tend to be quite a bit bigger than the first run of fish, averaging 30-40 pounds and with many fish caught every year reaching 50 pounds or larger.
The Kasilof river offers some great fishing opportunities, chances to see wildlife and is in a very peaceful setting. Sit back, relax and wait for one of these large, hard fighting fish to latch onto your line. If you are interested in a guided King Salmon fishing trip on the Kenai Peninsula I think that the Kasilof river is a great place to fish.

The Alaska fishing season is over for us here at Drifting on the Fly now. The cool 5 am mornings are now replaced with well below freezing temps, wind and snow now for months ahead. My 2012 season is over here in Alaska and I look forward to next years Alaska fishing season already. I
While getting my gear in order for the long winter ahead I was able to slip out and enjoy the kenai river for a couple afternoons. The fishing was incredible and I hated to leave it.
Here are a couple pictures from my last day on the Kenai river fly fishing for rainbow trout and steelhead my last few days of the 2012 season.
I caught this steelhead on the Anchor river using a six weight z axis switch rod
Brian of Wilderness Way looks a little chilli as we motor back up stream for another drift. We had an epic day on the river today and I look forward to getting back out there next spring. Who knows maybe there will be a 20 Pound fish on the end of my line next time?

The Alaska Kenai Peninsula weather has been ugly the last few days. I drove up to anchorage for yesterday and encountered some heavy gust of wind and bad rain on the way up and the way back.
This is a picture I took coming around turnagain arm this morning. The wind had to be blowing at least 40 miles per hour here.
The Alaska railroad along Turnagain arm heading to the kenai peninsula
I Launched my boat on the Kenai River this evening and it ended up being beautiful. The wind laid down and the clouds even let a few rays of sun through. The fishing season is far from over on the Kenai peninsula. In slower parts of the system like in this picture you can find concentrations of Silver salmon. Here I like to throw steamer patterns such as egg sucking leeches or articulated bunny flies, spinners also work well. I find that a slow steady retrieve finds most of my bites.
If you are interested in one of the prime dates for rainbow trout, silver salmon and or steelhead give us a call anytime.

The Kenai Peninsula fall is short but the peak colors can be beautiful if you catch them right. It is just about peak And in a couple more days and the leaves will fall and winter will be here for the most part. Termination dust is starting to top the mountains and the hills are starting to look a little more bear now. Along the Kenai river the views are spectacular right now. Cool mornings and almost 65 degrees in the afternoon make for my favorite time of year. The rainbow trout, silver salmon and steel head fishing are in full swing right now. I am finding that the silver salmon fishing is very good. I have had a good time back trolling, casting spinners and casting flies at these acrobatic salmon. most of our fish have been very bright and we haven’t had to release very many due to being in the river to long yet. Silver salmon fishing should continue to be good through the month. The Kenai Peninsula falls have a lot to offer from spectacular views to excellent fishing!

A few eagles feeding along the Kenai river, we also saw a brown bear fishing along the river as well. I was able to maneuver the boat close enough for my guest to get some great photos. Wildlife along the Kenai river is abundant and you never know what you might see on a day trip with us.
This young Alaska brown bear was really trying hard to catch a fish and finally did. I think he will winter just fine.
Kenai river Rainbow trout fishing was good today again and I hope it continues through the whole fall. Our fish have enough of a food source to hold them over for a long time this year with the pink salmon in the river. Pink salmon show up on the kenai river on even numbered years.
The guys caught lots of fish today and managed to hang a very large fish but didn’t land it. The opportunity to catch a world class rainbow trout is very high on the kenai river with fish caught daily 24-28 inches and an occasional 30 inch plus fish.

Kenai river rainbow trout fishing continues to be off the hook. I am noticing the change from the kenai river rainbow trout following the king salmon spawn to following the pink salmon spawn now. Our technique will not change but our fishing locations are switched up a bit when this happens. Keeping in tune with what is going on with the river keeps you into fish. Bent rods means happy clients and that is our main goal here at Drifting on the Fly.
Drift boat fishing is a great way to fish kenai river rainbow trout but when the river is big the power boats are legal it is a great option for reworking productive runs.
Keep a large rubber net under every fish I intend on releasing help in keeping them from ending up in the floor of the boat.
Taking a break from a great morning to have a little lunch. The fishing is good because these anglers refuse to eat or drink if their arms are not sore at lunch time. I love the experience that fishing gives to people. The camaraderie and sportsmanship that plays out almost everyday I am at work makes my job not work at all.

The Kenai river was running much clearer today than the last couple days. Kenai river Alaska fly fishing for rainbow trout and Dolly Varden fishing was very good all day long. I found a few concentrations of bigger fish and was able to land a few of them!
Jack caught so many fish today that after 8 hours he was laying down on the deck trying to run a drift. It didn’t work so well but he just couldn’t bring himself to quit!
Everyone caught good fish and they are already in for another week next year.
This Large dark rainbow trout was caught close to the shore. I think he was taking a break from the current and hanging in some easier water.
Dolly varden are often caught while fishing for rainbow trout on the kenai river

Relaxing on the Kenai river with a nice cigar and a beer at mid day. Wayne and crew are Taking a few minutes from fishing to smell the roses and reflect on the morning rainbow trout fishing.
The guys enjoying a nice cigar on the Kenai river after a big lunch.
Alcohol is permitted on our boats but not in excess. We do not provide any alcoholic beverages.
Sometimes it’s not all about the fish although these guys caught a lot of Kenai river rainbow trout and dolly Varden. The Kenai rive is an excellent place to get away from it all and get back to spending the day doing something for you, and possibly hooking the ONE! June, August, September and October can be very productive months for rainbow trout fishing and just relaxing on the kenai river.
