20120824-213403.jpg 20120824-213413.jpg I got my flask back today from getting engraved! Over the years I haven’t kept as good of track of this accomplishment as I should have and in the future you can bet that I will never forget another one! I know lots of you that are following this blog have fished with me before and am asking you to give me a call, text or email if you have caught a extremely big fish on tape with me and i will be happy to add you to the half gallon flask club! Kasilof river silvers and kenai river trout fishing

20120823-133723.jpg   Kasilof river silvers and kenai river trout fishing combo Got a quick limit of silver salmon yesterday morning on the kasilof river bouncing eggs in the tidal water. The group was interested in some fly fishing so we put the drift boat up and took the power boat out on the Kenai river rainbow trout fishing. The little extra effort really paid off with some big fish!!  This isn’t something we do every day but if there is time we are happy to go the extra mile for you. 20120823-134336.jpg Bright sunny days often put the rainbow’s off the bite.  Today was an exception to that!  When salmon start dropping eggs into the system all bets are off and it should be fish On.   20120823-134406.jpg Trout salmon combo days can be a lot of fun and a lot of work as well.  If we change up gears and switch systems extra half day rates will apply for the afternoon trip. If you would like to get in on a day like this give us a call at 907-382-6808. Tight lines, Scott Sager Drifting On The Fly

Kenai river trout fishing

Kenai river Trout fishing was good again today. We didn’t land any huge fish but we did catch a lot. The dolly Varden and rainbow trout fishing should do nothing but get better every day. 20120817-165721.jpg I liked this shirt one of the guest was wearing today. “the whole trout and nothing but the trout so help me cod” ! The Middle Kenai river trout fishing is very good right now and should continue to be good for the rest of the season.  Most seasons The rainbow trout fishing is consistent from the middle of August until freeze up.  There are days that we have to work for fish like anywhere but The Kenai river trout fishing is as good as it gets most of the time.  It always seems to amaze me even though I fish it year in and year out.  Give us a call and we will get you lined up on the kenai river trout fishing during a prime date.  Book early to make sure you get the date that best fits your trip to Alaska’s Kenai peninsula.  Contact us here on the site or by phone. Kenai river sockeye salmon and rainbow trout fishing

Kenai river sockeye salmon and rainbow trout fishing trips with Drifting on the Fly’s guide service. Kenai river sockeye salmon and rainbow trout fishing combination trips can be a long day on the water but provide a great experience of the river. Our full day trips are advertised at 8 hours but many days go on a little longer. I met up with one of my Alaska resident fishing groups early to get our waders on and gear ready this morning. The kids eager to get out on the river but the early mornings make them move a little slower. 20120724-203028.jpg Starting out on the lower Kenai river with some sockeye salmon fishing.  The kids had a great time and caught a few salmon but really wanted to go after a big Kenai river rainbow trout. Early in the sockeye salmon run I target fish directly behind cleaning stations and were carcasses tend to pile up. This proved to be where most of the rainbow trout were today! Nothing big but that doesn’t matter when you are catching fish. Good job guys and I’m looking forward to next weekend. 20120724-203906.jpg 20120724-203924.jpg 20120724-203936.jpg Combination trips are great for an all around experience we usually break the trip into two half days, fishing for salmon in the morning and trout in the afternoon. Thanks for keeping up with us and remember to check us out at www.driftingonthefly.com and on Facebook

Rainbow Trout Season

Today is the Rainbow Trout season opener on the Kenai River, June 11th. Get out your smolt and flesh fly patterns and enjoy some potentially great rainbow trout fishing. This is a great time of year to pursue trout, they are hungry and willing to take traditional flies, which is always a lot of fun. The mouth of the Kenai River from Skilak lake five miles down stream is closed to all motorized vessels until June 15th! This is set into place because of the trumpeter swans that are nesting in the area. If you are interested in taking a guided fishing trip on the Kenai river, feel free to contact us anytime at www.driftingonthefly.com or at 907-382-6808.

JIMS LANDING

Directions to Jims Landing View DIRECTIONS TO JIM’S LANDING in a larger map     Jims Landing is the last take out before the Kenai River Canyon. If you float past here you will have to navigate through class 111 whitewater rapids before coming to Skilak Lake.  From the outlet of Skilak Lake to the Upper Skilak Lake Boat Launch is just over 8 miles.  Trout and Salmon fishing can be great in this section of river.  From the outlet of Skilak Lake to the Upper Skilak Lake Boat Launch is just over 8 miles.  We might meat here if you have a canyon trip booked with us.  There is no concrete launch here and the loose gravel can be tricky docking your drift boat but it is very doable.  The wade fisherman can walk down river just a little ways and at different times of the year catch Sockeye salmon, Rainbow trout, dolly varden and silver salmon.  There is plenty of parking but during the peak season if you can’t find a place to park on the other side of the sterling highway there is another parking lot.  It is a short hike back to the boat launch.  Give us a call if you would like more information about wade fishing from Jims landing or if you are interested in a guided trip in this area.     Guided River Trip Rate $250 per person *LARGE GROUPS WELCOME *LODGING PACKAGES AVAILABLE *EXCLUSIVE BOAT PACKAGES -2 PERSON EXCLUSIVE STARTING AT $750.00 A DAY -3 PERSON EXCLUSIVE STARTING AT $950.00 A DAY contact details, business phone: 907-382-6808 or send an inquiry here!

RAINBOW TROUT FISHING THE KENAI RIVER

Rainbow trout fishing the Kenai river is always something I look forward too, even on day 100 I still find the motivation to get gear together and make my way to the river.  It is always helpful to see the river when the water is very low.  At Cooper Landing the Flow was around 600 CFS and below Skilak lake it was flowing around 840 CFS.  This gives me a lot of information for the following guide season on where rainbow trout might be holding. We picked up a few rainbow trout around Princess rapids on the upper Kenai River.  The temperature was in the low 20’s all morning and eventually came up to were we could fish without freezing up to bad.   Thanks to the Jet-boil we were able to take a break and have some hot coffee. KENAI RIVER RAINBOW TROUT Not removing the fish from the water on very cold days is a great idea, plus it’s much better for your hands!   I’m sure that leeches and flesh flies would have picked a few fish up but there were a lot of silver salmon spawning.  We knew that we would be fighting almost dead silvers all day were we were fishing if we used streamers.   Egg patterns seemed to be the ticket and we didn’t pick up many silvers at all.  Both dead egg patterns and fresh egg patterns picked up a few rainbow trout and dolly varden.
