A guided kenai river king salmon fishing trip will start early in the morning, usually meeting around 5:30 am. You will need a packed lunch, a valid fishing license, a valid king salmon stamp, and rain gear for the day (we can supply rain gear if needed). On the boat we will have all rods, reels, gear, and bait rigged up and ready to go for you. We will meet at one of the lower Kenai river boat launches and set out on our day of fishing from there. Start times and meeting locations are usually set up with a phone call closer to your trip. Choose from fishing out of a power boat or a drift boat on you trip.

The Chinook salmon, also commonly called the king salmon is the largest of all 5 pacific salmon. In Fact the world record was caught right here on the Kenai River, weight in at just over 97 pounds, and nearly 5 feet long! The Kenai river is renowned for its huge king salmon but they don’t come without a fight.

All our guests will step aboard either our immaculate 20 foot Willie predator power boat or our 20 foot Willie drift boat; both providing ample room to move around when a big King Salmon is running up and down the river. many guests have asked “will I know when a king salmon takes my line?” and the answer is yes you will defiantly know! The rod will nearly bend over in half, giving clear indication that something big has come along. When the rod finally bends over, the excitement heightens and everyone is charged to get the king to the boat. For many, it is an epic achievement to land one of these behemoths, and when it does happen, everyone celebrates with the same enthusiasm!

We offer Kenai River King Salmon Charter trips with both power boat and drift boat opportunities. Depending on how you would like to pursue these big fish! Starting in early May when the Kenai River is low we will make good use of the drift boat. This allows us to fish through the rocky runs and over the shallow gravel bars. As the river rises with rain and run off we will switch over to the power boat for ease of reworking runs. Drift boat fishing is offered upon request at this time, we will spend time on the seams of large eddies and softer runs. Both boats are effective and our guide service has them ready to go at all times. Our boats are clean and we maintained like our equipment. Fly fishing opportunities are offered but this big river is geared more towards conventional spin and casting tackle. Through June this is an artificial lure fishery only unless opened to bait early by fish and game. July marks the date of the bait opener unless again changed by fish and game. These laws are emergency ordered to opening or closings by fish and game depending on how the run is going. I have seen bait open in early June before and I have seen the whole season closed to bait before. Either way we are dialed in on pursuing these rod bending hard fighting fish and will do our best to put you in the action.
Guided Kenai river King salmon charter trips are 275.00$ plus tax per person. We can accommodate up to 4 people per boat and can handle larger groups if needed. We are taking bookings for guided king salmon trips now and look forward to spending a day or a week with you on the water. Give us a call at 907-382-6808 or contact us here on the site.
www.driftingonthefly.comKenai Peninsula Steelhead Fishing Guide trips will give you a greater chance at success on these hard fighting fish. We have spent much of our time studying and fishing the local Kenai Peninsula steelhead fishing water. The 3 main rivers on the Kenai Peninsula that we fish for steelhead are the Kasilof river, the Anchor river, and Deep Creek. All 3 rivers have great fishing opportunities for sizable steelhead, dolly varden, king salmon and silver salmon.

Kasilof River Steelhead fishing
We will start our kenai peninsula steelhead fishing guide trips out on the Kasilof river. In early to mid April most years the Kasilof river starts to fish well for steelhead. There are good wade fishing opportunities in the start of the season and then drift boat fishing opportunities when the ice is cleared from the launch. The river is shallow at this time of year and fish can be spooky. Swinging flies, dead drifting nymphs and egg patterns and even casting and striping flies has produced steelhead on the Kasilof river. Spring steelhead opportunities will last until about throughout the first week in June. Then the majority of the fish have made their way back to the ocean and will not return until around the first of September. Fall steelhead fishing on the Kasilof river can also produce a lot of fish. Kenai Peninsula steelhead fishing guide Trips will be offered until the middle of October when colder weather usually runs us off the river. Kasilof river steelhead fishing guide trips are offered to both spin and fly anglers.
Anchor river and Deep Creek steelhead fishing
The Anchor river and Deep Creek are also located on the Kenai Peninsula and are walk and wade fishing streams only. We have explored and fished these rivers for years as well and know them by heart and timing. Steelhead usually start to show up here in late august but we don’t really start targeting steelhead until the second week in September. These streams are smaller than the Kasilof river but have produced a lot of fish. I have seen tides bring in a big push of fish and between a couple of anglers have hooked up on dozens of fish. Again swinging and nymph fishing will catch fish but egg patterns will dominate. These fish like resident rainbow trout key in on the salmon spawn and can’t resist the right size and color combination!

The Alaska fishing season is over for us here at Drifting on the Fly now. The cool 5 am mornings are now replaced with well below freezing temps, wind and snow now for months ahead. My 2012 season is over here in Alaska and I look forward to next years Alaska fishing season already. I
While getting my gear in order for the long winter ahead I was able to slip out and enjoy the kenai river for a couple afternoons. The fishing was incredible and I hated to leave it.
Here are a couple pictures from my last day on the Kenai river fly fishing for rainbow trout and steelhead my last few days of the 2012 season.
I caught this steelhead on the Anchor river using a six weight z axis switch rod
Brian of Wilderness Way looks a little chilli as we motor back up stream for another drift. We had an epic day on the river today and I look forward to getting back out there next spring. Who knows maybe there will be a 20 Pound fish on the end of my line next time?

KENAI RIVER RAINBOW TROUT FISHING!
Water levels are falling on the Kenai river now after this falls 100 year flood. I was able to fish many places today that I had not for the last 10 days. The fish are hungry and we were able to catch and hook many large rainbow trout. I think the next two weeks could prove to be some great Kenai River rainbow trout fishing.
There are days available if you are interested in a last chance fly fishing trip on the Kenai river for the 2012 fishing season, Give us a call soon!!
Much of the food source right now has been washed out with the high water so we concentrated our efforts behind structure where food would be caught up. I like to fish close to deep cut banks with sweepers that can catch caucasus and near back eddies that food can get washed into.
When the mighty Kenai river is flowing higher I prefer to use the power boat where it is legal. This allows us to rework runs with ease
and move around without waisting to much time getting there.
Jody loves Kenai river rainbow trout fishing, he says it is his favorite fishing he has ever done.

Brown bear viewing along the Kenai river on a nice fall evening makes for a great trip.
Brown bear viewing along the Kenai River can very interesting. When the salmon show up in good numbers the bears both black and brown will come down along the Kenai to feed. Often in the late summer and fall the bears can be seen at anytime of day. Though like with most animals the best time to view them is in the early morning and the evenings. These three bears played and fished for a few hours while we fished for rainbow trout. This gave us plenty of opportunity to take pictures and enjoy them without getting to close. The bears will usually tolerate boats pulling up at a reasonable distance to take pictures but they are wild animals and they will decide what is to close. We always respect the wildlife by giving them the space to do what comes natural to them! FISH. If you are interested in brown bear viewing along the kenai river give us a call and we will try to line up a short trip for you.
Walk and wade on the Kenai river can be a great way to chase trophy rainbow trout. There are many steams and lakes that are in the surrounding area as well as the kenai river to fish. Rainbow trout and dolly Varden are staged behind spawning salmon which in places can be very close to shore. Match the hatch and it should be fish on. When ever I walk and wade on the Kenai river I carry pepper spray or a firearm. This is the time of year that bears are cruising the banks during daylight hours and one never knows. Sometimes using good judgement and respecting the wildlife isn’t enough and you need to have protection. Remember you are in Alaska.
Guided day trips for walk and wade fishing trips are 275.00$ per person plus tax. I like to keep it to a maximum of 4 people per guide so that we don’t loose that personal attention that you are paying for. Give us a call or click here anytime and we will be happy to get you lined up
Walk and wade on the kenai river is another great way to enjoy your Alaska fishing vacation. These anglers were able to fool these fish into taking there presentation and never set foot in a boat.
