Guided Kenai River King Salmon Fishing is one of the options for a trip in June or July. The Second run of Kenai Kings are almost here now. The end of June and first of July we start to see the second run filter in with the end of the first run of Kings. The second run will continue to get stronger the further into July we get. King Salmon Season closes on the Kenai and Kasilof river at the end of July so if you have a guided kenai river king salmon fishing trip in mind make sure you book soon.

A guided kenai river king salmon fishing trip will start early in the morning, usually meeting around 5:30 am. You will need a packed lunch, a valid fishing license, a valid king salmon stamp, and rain gear for the day (we can supply rain gear if needed). On the boat we will have all rods, reels, gear, and bait rigged up and ready to go for you. We will meet at one of the lower Kenai river boat launches and set out on our day of fishing from there. Start times and meeting locations are usually set up with a phone call closer to your trip. Choose from fishing out of a power boat or a drift boat on you trip.

The Chinook salmon, also commonly called the king salmon is the largest of all 5 pacific salmon. In Fact the world record was caught right here on the Kenai River, weight in at just over 97 pounds, and nearly 5 feet long! The Kenai river is renowned for its huge king salmon but they don’t come without a fight.

All our guests will step aboard either our immaculate 20 foot Willie predator power boat or our 20 foot Willie drift boat; both providing ample room to move around when a big King Salmon is running up and down the river. many guests have asked “will I know when a king salmon takes my line?” and the answer is yes you will defiantly know! The rod will nearly bend over in half, giving clear indication that something big has come along. When the rod finally bends over, the excitement heightens and everyone is charged to get the king to the boat. For many, it is an epic achievement to land one of these behemoths, and when it does happen, everyone celebrates with the same enthusiasm!

When the fishing is good on a kenai river trip there is little time for sitting around. Here Kim and Jeff are excited about a great net job on a sockeye salmon.
A Good kenai River Trip for Sockeye Salmon should be scheduled for the middle of June and from the middle of July until the second week in August. Fishing for Sockeye Salmon begins in June on the Kenai river and will last until mid august some years. There are two runs of sockeye salmon on the Kenai river. The first run which is known as the russian river run of sockeye salmon which opens on June 11th and usually peaks around the 20th of June. The second run of sockeye salmon will start filtering in with the end of the first run and should peak around the middle of July. The second run of fish in many recent years has brought hundreds of thousands of fish into the system. Usually by the second week in August the fishing has passed its peak for sockeye salmon and we are moving on to rainbow trout and silver salmon fishing.
If you are in for a fun and exciting Kenai river trip lets chase some sockeye salmon. We will get to one of my favorite gravel bars in either a drift boat or power boat and set up for a great day of fishing. The limit of sockeye salmon per person per day is 3 unless fish and game releases an emergency order to allow more fish to be harvested. When this happens it usually goes up to 6 per person.

We offer guided salmon charter fishing on the Kasilof river and the Kenai river. Power boat or drift boat salmon fishing on the Kenai peninsula makes us diverse and ready to go where the fish are biting. If you prefer fishing out of one boat to another we can accommodate that as well. Kenai peninsula salmon charter day trips include all gear and tackle needed for the day, bait if being used, coffee, snacks, waders if needed, and rain gear if you don’t have your own. Depending on the timing of your trip will decide which species of salmon that we will pursue. If you have a certain species in mind we will give you the peak dates available to choose from.

We offer Kenai River King Salmon Charter trips with both power boat and drift boat opportunities. Depending on how you would like to pursue these big fish! Starting in early May when the Kenai River is low we will make good use of the drift boat. This allows us to fish through the rocky runs and over the shallow gravel bars. As the river rises with rain and run off we will switch over to the power boat for ease of reworking runs. Drift boat fishing is offered upon request at this time, we will spend time on the seams of large eddies and softer runs. Both boats are effective and our guide service has them ready to go at all times. Our boats are clean and we maintained like our equipment. Fly fishing opportunities are offered but this big river is geared more towards conventional spin and casting tackle. Through June this is an artificial lure fishery only unless opened to bait early by fish and game. July marks the date of the bait opener unless again changed by fish and game. These laws are emergency ordered to opening or closings by fish and game depending on how the run is going. I have seen bait open in early June before and I have seen the whole season closed to bait before. Either way we are dialed in on pursuing these rod bending hard fighting fish and will do our best to put you in the action.

The 3 main rivers on the Kenai Peninsula that we fish for steelhead are the Kasilof river, the Anchor river, and Deep Creek. All 3 rivers have great fishing opportunities for sizable steelhead, dolly varden, king salmon and silver salmon.

Kasilof River Steelhead fishing
We will start our kenai peninsula steelhead fishing guide trips out on the Kasilof river. In early to mid April most years the Kasilof river starts to fish well for steelhead. There are good wade fishing opportunities in the start of the season and then drift boat fishing opportunities when the ice is cleared from the launch. The river is shallow at this time of year and fish can be spooky. Swinging flies, dead drifting nymphs and egg patterns and even casting and striping flies has produced steelhead on the Kasilof river. Spring steelhead opportunities will last until about throughout the first week in June. Then the majority of the fish have made their way back to the ocean and will not return until around the first of September. Fall steelhead fishing on the Kasilof river can also produce a lot of fish. Kenai Peninsula steelhead fishing guide Trips will be offered until the middle of October when colder weather usually runs us off the river. Kasilof river steelhead fishing guide trips are offered to both spin and fly anglers.
Anchor river and Deep Creek steelhead fishing
The Anchor river and Deep Creek are also located on the Kenai Peninsula and are walk and wade fishing streams only. We have explored and fished these rivers for years as well and know them by heart and timing. Steelhead usually start to show up here in late august but we don’t really start targeting steelhead until the second week in September. These streams are smaller than the Kasilof river but have produced a lot of fish. I have seen tides bring in a big push of fish and between a couple of anglers have hooked up on dozens of fish. Again swinging and nymph fishing will catch fish but egg patterns will dominate. These fish like resident rainbow trout key in on the salmon spawn and can’t resist the right size and color combination!

This fishery is the located 12 mile from Soldotna Alaska and is the sister river to the Kenai River. It is also a drift boat only King Salmon fishery which means there are no motors allowed and pressure is way less than on the Kenai River, though popularity is growing every year.
The Kasilof river has two distinctive runs of King Salmon.
The First run of fish start to show up around the middle of May and usually peaks by the middle of June. These early run Kings will typically run between 20 and 30 pounds with an occasional fish weighing over 30 pounds. During the early season the river is much lower than it is in late June and July. It is still cold in the high country and the runoff isn’t as heavy yet. This is the time to come if you are looking to hook a King Salmon on the fly. As the water rises there is more glacier silt that clouds the river and less bank fishing opportunity to fly fish.
The second run of Kasilof River King Salmon start to show up near the end of June mixing in with the remainder of the first run fish and will keep coming in through the end of King salmon season. July 31st is the last day that we are allowed to target these fish. These fish tend to be quite a bit bigger than the first run of fish, averaging 30-40 pounds and with many fish caught every year reaching 50 pounds or larger.
The Kasilof river offers some great fishing opportunities, chances to see wildlife and is in a very peaceful setting. Sit back, relax and wait for one of these large, hard fighting fish to latch onto your line.
