FALL TROUT FISHING ON THE KENAI RIVER

Fall trout fishing on the Kenai River can be epic.  My good friend Nigel Fox caught this Rainbow Trout on his favorite flesh fly. If the temperatures are right at this time of year we will allow you to remove the fish briefly from the water for a picture Late Oct. when the conditions are right you might switch it up and try one of your favorite flesh flies.  Many flies work at this time of year.  Leech’s, flesh flies, egg patterns, a variety of nymphs and many more, so techniques change as we change patterns. The mornings are cold and winter is knocking on our door now.  I would like to be able to chase kenai river rainbow trout for a few more weeks though. Guiding on the kenai river is very exciting for me because you never know when the opportunity for a fish of a lifetime is willing to bite. We offer both fly fishing and spin fishing guided trips.  No matter how you would like to fish the Kenai River we can accommodate your style.  Upper river drift boat trips and middle kenai river power boat trips available. I hope that if you are interested in a guide trip that you will contact us for your next Alaska fishing vacation. Tight Lines, Scott Drifting On The Fly, LLC

Alaska Top Water Rainbow Trout Fishing

Alaska rainbow trout fishing   Under the right conditions and timing you can find some great Alaska top water rainbow trout fishing.  From Dry flies in small streams and lakes to big mouse patterns on the Kenai and other rivers in the state.  June proves to be a good month on the Kenai Peninsula for this and I have some great streams in other parts of the state that can provide top water rainbow trout fishing. It is my goal to explore at least one new river every year. This year we chose Lake Creek to see if it was worth adding to the arsenal.  At the begining of the trip we were able to get plenty of rainbows taking mouse patterns which made the trip worth while right then and there. We had high muddy water for the whole trip and still the river produced a good number of rainbow trout, grayling, and silver salmon .  On our 60 mile adventure through white water, rocks and canyons. We found ourselves thinking that we need to show this to you.   If you are interested in a 6 day 5 night back country float I think we found a great adventure for you!  I can put this Alaska guide trip together and work closely with you to build a fishing trip of a lifetime. Guided Kasilof King Salmon Fishing

Guided Kasilof King Salmon Fishing trips are offered in May, June, and July.  Today We set out again today to try to match wits with another King salmon on the kasilof river. We had a slow start with a few Dolly Varden caught and a few missed opportunities with some king Salmon. Ahead of the tide we stuck this fish! After what seemed to be a 30 minute struggle Terry brought this beautiful King Salmon to the net. I was a great day to see a lady from the east coast that has not fished much be so proud of her catch and she should be.  Big King Salmon can put a real stain on you and the equipment.  Sometimes it take a few drift to hook up but when you do it is very exciting to battle a King Salmon.

Nice job Terry and we’ll try again tomorrow.

Guided fishing trips are 275.00 per person and exclusive boat packages are available upon request.  Exclusive boats are a great way to keep the trip personal for the days fishing.  Check out more on our website at www.driftingonthefly.com and just maybe you could be next to hook up on a Kasilof river guide trip!

KENAI PENINSULA CLAM DIGGING

Kenai peninsula clam digging can be spectacular.  If you enjoy clams and are heading north to go fishing check the tide tables and plan your trip on the low of low tides.  Any dates with a negative tide should produce good clam digging.  Find a divet in the sand and start digging.  I like to dig a couple times with a shovel to get close and then dig by hand.  I tend to break less clams this way but many techniques work well and along with a good meal it is a ton of fun.  Last week we had some great tides and my wife and I filled the bag with them.  The law requires you to have a fishing license to dig and you have to keep any razor clam that you pull up.  Those that get the hang of pulling up these fast, tasty guys up can keep 60 of them a day.  The average clam is about 5 inches and you can score clams up to about 8 inches. If you have any questions about seeking clams out feel free to contact me at www.driftingonthefly.com Thanks and good fishing, Scott Sager

Silver Salmon Fly Fishing

copy-of-600.jpg

When I think of Salmon on the fly rod I think Silver Salmon fly fishing.  The fishing typically gets good by mid to late July on some of our fly out fishing and mid Aug. to the end of Oct. on the Kenai peninsula and the kenai river.  In the right conditions silver salmon will take the fly very aggressively.  I’ve even had many opportunities to take these fish on top water.  Bunny flies, articulated flies, marabou flies, leaches, spoon flies, etc. are just a few patterns that will work well for these fish.  I find a slow strip in slow water or swinging your flies in faster water draw the most strikes.  I prefer a strip set or scissor strike to set the hook.  This way if you miss the fish you don’t pull the streamer out of the strike zone and often the fish will come back to give you a second chance.  If you are fishing from a boat make sure you fish the fly all the way back to the boat.  I see fish chasing all the way to the boat for a last chance strike. If you are interested in matching your skills with these fish make sure you contact me at www.driftingonthefly.com and we’ll get you lined up on a alaska fishing guide tip. Homer King Salmon Derby

copy-of-hunting-069.jpgcopy-of-hunting-068.jpg copy-of-hunting-064.jpg Due to bad weather the winter Homer king salmon derby was delayed until this past sunday.  There were 792 fishermen in the derby and 92 fish caught.  The odds don’t sound very good but there were 20 more fish caught this year than last year.  Boats are lined up along the bluff trolling for the Homer king salmon derby winning fish.  The fishing isn’t fast and furious but what a great place to spend the day on the water.   I fished with some good friends from around the Kenai Peninsula.  We had a great day but ended up with no king salmon on the boat.  It was a great way to get out and spend the day on the water and I highly recommend it to anyone that would like to experience Alaskas fishing.  There is not a lot of fishing going on the Kenai peninsula this early in the spring and it gives us a chance to get out and get a line wet.  If you would like to participate in the Homer king salmon derby contact me at www.driftingonthefly.com and I will get you lined up. Kenai River Rainbow Trout Fishing

copy-of-41.jpg

Kenai river rainbow trout fishing on the Upper river today.  This young man caught one of the largest upper kenai river rainbow trout that I have landed on my boat. Kids should have all the luck! Landing Big upper kenai river rainbow trout on light tackle or fly is a real treat. The current is swift and there are many obstacles that can end a battle with a big fish quickly. So many times a fish like this will out play the most experience fisher person. A long run a couple of jumps and some good luck and this fish fell to the net and got to pose for the camera.  The Kenai river offers good fishing from the start of the system all the way to the end of the system.  Depending on timing and what is happening on the river will determine which section of river we will pursue.  I often fish the upper kenai river in the fall. Guided kenai river rainbow trout fishing trips cost 275.00 per person for walk and wade, drift boat fishing or power boat fishing. Tight Lines, Scott Sager Drifting On The Fly, LLC
