If you float past here you will have to navigate through class 111 whitewater rapids before coming to Skilak Lake. From the outlet of Skilak Lake to the Upper Skilak Lake Boat Launch is just over 8 miles. Trout and Salmon fishing can be great in this section of river. There is no concrete launch here and the loose gravel can be tricky docking your drift boat but it is very doable. The wade fisherman can walk down river just a little ways and at different times of the year catch Sockeye salmon, Rainbow trout, dolly varden and silver salmon. There is plenty of parking but during the peak season if you can’t find a place to park on the other side of the sterling highway there is another parking lot. DIRECTIONS TO THE UPPER SKILAK LAKE BOAT LAUNCH View DIRECTIONS TO UPPER SKILAK LAKE BOAT LAUNCH in a larger map Upper Skilak Lake boat launch is a great place to camp, picnic, fish, view wildlife and pull your boat from a long day fishing the Kenai river canyon fishing for rainbow trout, dolly varden, silver salmon or sockeye salmon. I have seen black bears, brown bears, moose, and eagles at different times right at the boat launch. Here you will also find some of the most scenic camping on the kenai peninsula. If you plan on Shuttling your vehicle you can do that yourself or Wildman’s shuttle service will do it for you. You can call them at 907-595-1456 to find out about pricing. From the mouth of the Kenai river to the boat launch is about 8 miles. The weather is very unpredictable on the lake and with a small motor pushing a drift boat you have to be very careful on the days that you choose to make this trip. RAINBOW TROUT FISHING THE KENAI RIVER

Rainbow trout fishing the Kenai river is always something I look forward too, even on day 100 I still find the motivation to get gear together and make my way to the river. It is always helpful to see the river when the water is very low. At Cooper Landing the Flow was around 600 CFS and below Skilak lake it was flowing around 840 CFS. This gives me a lot of information for the following guide season on where rainbow trout might be holding. We picked up a few rainbow trout around Princess rapids on the upper Kenai River. The temperature was in the low 20’s all morning and eventually came up to were we could fish without freezing up to bad. Thanks to the Jet-boil we were able to take a break and have some hot coffee.

Not removing the fish from the water on very cold days is a great idea, plus it’s much better for your hands! I’m sure that leeches and flesh flies would have picked a few fish up but there were a lot of silver salmon spawning. We knew that we would be fighting almost dead silvers all day were we were fishing if we used streamers. Egg patterns seemed to be the ticket and we didn’t pick up many silvers at all. Both dead egg patterns and fresh egg patterns picked up a few rainbow trout and dolly varden. TIGHT LINES, SCOTT SAGER 907-382-6808

Kenai river trout fishing in the winter can be good one day and just OK the next. Inconsistent temperatures has a lot to do with this. The peak season of kenai river trout fishing is June, August, September and October. The first weekend of Dec. was beautiful on the Kenai river. We didn’t catch a ton of rainbow trout but enough to keep us motivated. Skilak lake is now starting to freeze over and wade fishing opportunities are about all that is available now. The weather was excellent today with temperatures over 30 degrees! I wasn’t out on the Kenai river but I know a few people that took full advantage and look forward to the report. Winter fishing is a great time of year to get out on the Kenai river, so pick a window of good weather and get outside! Good luck and we’ll see you out there. KENAI RIVER

The rainbow trout fishing on the Kenai River should be excellent until the end of the month when the river closes. My last trout trip was last week on the middle Kenai river until the opener in June. To those that are able to get out in the next couple of days. Good Luck!

This is one of my favorite early season patterns but Olive Sculpins have been very productive too. We are taking bookings for the Kenai river and other systems in Alaska now. ICE FISHING SKILAK LAKE

We are headed out ice fishing Skilak lake today and Here are a couple of pictures just to the left of the boat launch at Skilak. We launch our boats many days throughout the season here. For those who have been here in the summer you may not recognize Skilak lake in the winter. Now it provides access for ice fisherman until it thaws. skilak-lake-2
