Merry christmas

Christmas is a wonderful time of year. Family, friends and giving thanks is what is most important to us. I hope that everyone has a wonderful holiday and enjoys all that the festivities has to offer. This year Kim and I where woken up early to signs of our first child’s arrival. We are now 8 hours into the labor and expecting an arrival anytime. The adventure begins and it will be one that we will never forget. Merry Christmas from all of us here at Drifting on the Fly.

Kenai peninsula steelhead fishing

One of my favorite things to do on a day off is to hit up the kenai peninsula steelhead fishing.  We have a few hours to drive and catch up after a long fishing season and reflect. We arrive in the parking lot and there are a few anglers still out but not many, get our waders on and hit the river. The weather is defiantly colder now and the fishing has been so good. Soon after we start we hit the first fish and another in just a few hours we took a break and talked about how good of a day we were having. We nymph fished all day and between the two of us were able to dredge up almost two dozen fish.  In Alaska I have had quit a few days where over a dozen fish were landed in the party but we haven’t had to many days where a couple dozen fish were landed.  This is truly a special place and Here are a few pictures of some Kenai peninsula steelhead. 20121019-100931.jpg A good high stick will keep less line on the water and your drift drag free.  Doing this will bring you more strikes during your fishing trip. 20121019-100945.jpg Keeping steady pressure on a fish will give you less chances of the hook falling out. 20121019-101007.jpg Scott Sager with a nice kenai peninsula steelhead 20121019-101015.jpg Most of our walk and wade steelhead fisheries on the Kenai peninsula close to fishing on nov.1 this year. If you need a last minute fix make sure to give us a call, I would love to share a day like this with you as well. Tight lines Scott Sager

Rainbow trout and silver salmon fishing

October has been great rainbow trout and silver salmon fishing on the Kenai river. Water levels are good and the fish are on the bite. We have picked up a lot of rainbow trout and dolly Varden on flesh flies. 20121012-225213.jpg 20121012-225226.jpg 20121012-225238.jpg Jody has caught three fish today in the high 20’s and just can’t seem to break the 30 inch mark 20121012-225252.jpg Silver salmon (cohoe) fishing on the Kenai river has been very good. We stopped for just a few minutes to cast some streamers on a grass bank and Jody was able to pick up two salmon really fast. We quickly went back to trout fishing but I think we could have picked up a few more. 20121012-225550.jpg An Alaska fishing season is very short and I always hate to see freeze up in the near future but it is that time of year. The last few trips will be biter sweet in the way of some of the best rainbow trout and silver salmon fishing of the season but they are the last few trips. I enjoy showing people the rivers I know and if you have ever wanted to fish the Kenai peninsula keep in mind that we will be right back out there next season. Give us a call anytime and we will design a trip for the upcoming fishing season. Tight lines, Scott Sager

Kenai river rainbow trout fishing

KENAI RIVER RAINBOW TROUT FISHING! Water levels are falling on the Kenai river now after this falls 100 year flood. I was able to fish many places today that I had not for the last 10 days. The fish are hungry and we were able to catch and hook many large rainbow trout. I think the next two weeks could prove to be some great Kenai River rainbow trout fishing. There are days available if you are interested in a last chance fly fishing trip on the Kenai river for the 2012 fishing season, Give us a call soon!!   20121006-221038.jpg Much of the food source right now has been washed out with the high water so we concentrated our efforts behind structure where food would be caught up.  I like to fish close to deep cut banks with sweepers that can catch caucasus and near back eddies that food can get washed into.   20121006-221052.jpg When the mighty Kenai river is flowing higher I prefer to use the power boat where it is legal.  This allows us to rework runs with ease and move around without waisting to much time getting there. 20121006-221102.jpg Jody loves Kenai river rainbow trout fishing,  he says it is his favorite fishing he has ever done. Kenai river running high

High water on the Kenai river can cause the Rainbow trout fishing to shut down for a few days. Unfortunately the river is out of its banks and there is no fishing at this time. 20120924-221821.jpg 20120924-221827.jpg 20120924-221842.jpg I’ll report back in when fishing resumes. It shouldn’t be to long. I’m taking a few days to go up north and explore some new water. Tight lines Scott Sager Www.driftingonthefly.com

Brown bear viewing along the Kenai River

Brown bear viewing along the Kenai river on a nice fall evening makes for a great trip. 20120923-214740.jpg20120923-214748.jpg20120923-214754.jpg20120923-214801.jpg20120923-214807.jpg20120923-214813.jpg Brown bear viewing along the Kenai River can very interesting.  When the salmon show up in good numbers the bears both black and brown will come down along the Kenai to feed.  Often in the late summer and fall the bears can be seen at anytime of day.  Though like with most animals the best time to view them is in the early morning and the evenings.  These three bears played and fished for a few hours while we fished for rainbow trout.  This gave us plenty of opportunity to take pictures and enjoy them without getting to close.  The bears will usually tolerate boats pulling up at a reasonable distance to take pictures but they are wild animals and they will decide what is to close.  We always respect the wildlife by giving them the space to do what comes natural to them! FISH.  If you are interested in brown bear viewing along the kenai river give us a call and we will try to line up a short trip for you.

Alaska kenai peninsula weather

The Alaska Kenai Peninsula weather has been ugly the last few days. I drove up to anchorage for yesterday and encountered some heavy gust of wind and bad rain on the way up and the way back. 20120919-221725.jpg This is a picture I took coming around turnagain arm this morning.  The wind had to be blowing at least 40 miles per hour here. 20120919-221740.jpg The Alaska railroad along Turnagain arm heading to the kenai peninsula   20120919-221927.jpg I Launched my boat on the Kenai River this evening and it ended up being beautiful. The wind laid down and the clouds even let a few rays of sun through. The fishing season is far from over on the Kenai peninsula. In slower parts of the system like in this picture you can find concentrations of Silver salmon.  Here I like to throw steamer patterns such as egg sucking leeches or articulated bunny flies, spinners also work well.  I find that a slow steady retrieve finds most of my bites.   If you are interested in one of the prime dates for rainbow trout, silver salmon and or steelhead give us a call anytime. Kenai peninsula fall

The Kenai Peninsula fall is short but the peak colors can be beautiful if you catch them right. It is just about peak And in a couple more days and the leaves will fall and winter will be here for the most part.  Termination dust is starting to top the mountains and the hills are starting to look a little more bear now.  Along the Kenai river the views are spectacular right now. Cool mornings and almost 65 degrees in the afternoon make for my favorite time of year. The rainbow trout, silver salmon and steel head fishing are in full swing right now.  I am finding that the silver salmon fishing is very good.  I have had a good time back trolling, casting spinners and casting flies at these acrobatic salmon.  most of our fish have been very bright and we haven’t had to release very many due to being in the river to long yet. Silver salmon fishing should continue to be good through the month. The Kenai Peninsula falls have a lot to offer from spectacular views to excellent fishing! 20120917-171509.jpg 20120917-171524.jpg   Tight lines Scott Sager click here to book

Walk and wade on the Kenai river

Walk and wade on the Kenai river can be a great way to chase trophy rainbow trout. There are many steams and lakes that are in the surrounding area as well as the kenai river to fish.  Rainbow trout and dolly Varden are staged behind spawning salmon which in places can be very close to shore.  Match the hatch and it should be fish on. When ever I walk and wade on the Kenai river I carry pepper spray or a firearm.  This is the time of year that bears are cruising the banks during daylight hours and one never knows.  Sometimes using good judgement and respecting the wildlife isn’t enough and you need to have protection.  Remember you are in Alaska. Guided day trips for walk and wade fishing trips are 275.00$ per person plus tax. I like to keep it to a maximum of 4 people per guide so that we don’t loose that personal attention that you are paying for. Give us a call or click here anytime and we will be happy to get you lined up 20120916-124855.jpg 20120916-124915.jpg 20120916-124928.jpg   20120916-124953.jpg Walk and wade on the kenai river is another great way to enjoy your Alaska fishing vacation.  These anglers were able to fool these fish into taking there presentation and never set foot in a boat.

Kenai peninsula steel head fishing

20120913-171556.jpg Kenai peninsula steel head fishing   Dolly Varden are a real bonus fish while Fishing for steelhead on the Kenai peninsula . This morning the bite was on in a few holes and we just happened to be there while it was going on. 20120913-171544.jpg This Steel head was hooked and released in very shallow water.  When approaching any body of water make sure you take a second to look and see if any fish might be close enough you could spook by just walking up to the edge of the water.  You might be making your first couple of cast standing back in the bushes to not spook these fish 20120913-171533.jpg 20120913-171522.jpg Once you have covered the water closer to shore then you can make your way further out into the stream.  Most of the Kenai Peninsula steel head fishing is done in smaller streams and rivers. They are easily accessible and in most places you can wade across the river.  This makes it nice for chasing those big ocean run steel head up and down the river too!
