A guided kenai river king salmon fishing trip will start early in the morning, usually meeting around 5:30 am. You will need a packed lunch, a valid fishing license, a valid king salmon stamp, and rain gear for the day (we can supply rain gear if needed). On the boat we will have all rods, reels, gear, and bait rigged up and ready to go for you. We will meet at one of the lower Kenai river boat launches and set out on our day of fishing from there. Start times and meeting locations are usually set up with a phone call closer to your trip. Choose from fishing out of a power boat or a drift boat on you trip.

We offer Kenai River King Salmon Charter trips with both power boat and drift boat opportunities. Depending on how you would like to pursue these big fish! Starting in early May when the Kenai River is low we will make good use of the drift boat. This allows us to fish through the rocky runs and over the shallow gravel bars. As the river rises with rain and run off we will switch over to the power boat for ease of reworking runs. Drift boat fishing is offered upon request at this time, we will spend time on the seams of large eddies and softer runs. Both boats are effective and our guide service has them ready to go at all times. Our boats are clean and we maintained like our equipment. Fly fishing opportunities are offered but this big river is geared more towards conventional spin and casting tackle. Through June this is an artificial lure fishery only unless opened to bait early by fish and game. July marks the date of the bait opener unless again changed by fish and game. These laws are emergency ordered to opening or closings by fish and game depending on how the run is going. I have seen bait open in early June before and I have seen the whole season closed to bait before. Either way we are dialed in on pursuing these rod bending hard fighting fish and will do our best to put you in the action.

Headed to the Kenai Peninsula in search of a Guided Kasilof River King Salmon Fishing? Consider the Kasilof River a great option! This fishery is the located 12 mile from Soldotna Alaska and is the sister river to the Kenai River. It is also a drift boat only King Salmon fishery which means there are no motors allowed and pressure is way less than on the Kenai River, though popularity is growing every year.
The Kasilof river has two distinctive runs of King Salmon.
The First run of fish start to show up around the middle of May and usually peaks by the middle of June. These early run Kings will typically run between 20 and 30 pounds with an occasional fish weighing over 30 pounds. During the early season the river is much lower than it is in late June and July. It is still cold in the high country and the runoff isn’t as heavy yet. This is the time to come if you are looking to hook a King Salmon on the fly. As the water rises there is more glacier silt that clouds the river and less bank fishing opportunity to fly fish.
The second run of Kasilof River King Salmon start to show up near the end of June mixing in with the remainder of the first run fish and will keep coming in through the end of King salmon season. July 31st is the last day that we are allowed to target these fish. These fish tend to be quite a bit bigger than the first run of fish, averaging 30-40 pounds and with many fish caught every year reaching 50 pounds or larger.
The Kasilof river offers some great fishing opportunities, chances to see wildlife and is in a very peaceful setting. Sit back, relax and wait for one of these large, hard fighting fish to latch onto your line. Today is the Rainbow Trout season opener on the Kenai River, June 11th. Get out your smolt and flesh fly patterns and enjoy some potentially great rainbow trout fishing. This is a great time of year to pursue trout, they are hungry and willing to take traditional flies, which is always a lot of fun. The mouth of the Kenai River from Skilak lake five miles down stream is closed to all motorized vessels until June 15th! This is set into place because of the trumpeter swans that are nesting in the area.

This is a very popular spot to launch your guide boat on the lower Kenai river for a days fishing for King salmon. There is a fee station set up shortly after you enter the park so make sure you stop for that. Along with camping and great gravel bars for fishing the park has picnic areas and of course the boat launch. The Kenai river runs fast in July and Centennial park has a nice back eddie with place to park your boat while you are parking your rig after launching. If you plan on fishing the top half of the lower kenai river this is a great place to launch your boat. I enjoy fishing sunkin island, poachers cove, river quest, big eddie and a few other runs that are easily accessible from Centennial park.

First run of Kenai River King SalmonOpportunities at for kenai river king salmon fishing starts in early to the middle of May. Our drift boat makes is possible to navigate through the shallow Kenai River and get to concentrated first runs of king salmon. By the first of June the Kenai river is usually high enough that we will start running our powerboat until the end of King Salmon season on the Kenai River. The best thing about being here for the first run of king salmon is there is much less competition on the water. The run isn’t as big as the July run of kings and is not as popular. This is sometimes beneficial to the anglers because of fewer boats on the water. The first run of king salmon peaks in numbers by the middle of June and strong daily numbers will appear until the second run start to show up.Second run of Kenai river king salmonThe second run of king salmon is bigger on average than the first run of fish. This is a very popular run of king salmon because they appear in the summer. The Kenai Peninsula in the nicest month is indescribable. There are two to three times more fish in the second run of king salmon on the Kenai River than the first run. The use of bait also opens July first (sometimes earlier). The use of bait opens more techniques in which we can pursue these fish. Wrapping quick fish for example tends to produce more fish than an unwrapped one most of the time. We also back bounce, back troll, and side drift with cured eggs. The second run has a lot of good characteristics but it also brings in a lot more pressure to the river. When it comes to pursuing a trophy don’t rule out the first run because the standing world record was caught in May!Cost for guide trip:

Guided Kasilof river King salmon fishing is officially over on the Kenai peninsula now. The end of July marks the end of King salmon fishing on the Kenai peninsula. Though it was a great season we are now geared up and focused on Silver Salmon, Sockeye salmon and rainbow trout fishing now.

I had the pleasure of fishing with my family on the last day of King salmon season and this 53″ Buck took an orange spin and gloe with some cured salmon eggs. We ended up landing this fish more than a mile from where it was hooked!! This is a very large King salmon caught on the Kasilof river and everyone is very proud of it. Our boat has been fishing good and this is a great way to end the King salmon season here in Alaska.
Though king fishing season is over look for more pictures and info about king fishing with us in the future from us. The season is really not that far away so if you are interested in a prime date be sure to book early. The last three weeks in July on the Kenai Peninsula seem to book faster and faster each year.
