July rainbow trout fishing

July rainbow trout fishing has been excellent on the Kenai river. Fishing Behind all the sockeye anglers has been the ticket here lately. I’ve been running a 9′ leader with flesh or egg patterns and picking up fish through put the day. There is a lot of food in the system now and it should only get better as the season goes on!

Guided Kenai River King Salmon Fishing

Guided Kenai River King Salmon Fishing is one of the options for a trip in June or July.  The Second run of Kenai Kings are almost here now.  The end of June and first of July we start to see the second run filter in with the end of the first run of Kings.  The second run will continue to get stronger the further into July we get.  King Salmon Season closes on the Kenai and Kasilof river at the end of July so if you have a guided kenai river king salmon fishing trip in mind make sure you book soon.

A guided kenai river king salmon fishing trip will start early in the morning, usually meeting around 5:30 am.  You will need a packed lunch, a valid fishing license, a valid king salmon stamp, and rain gear for the day (we can supply rain gear if needed).  On the boat we will have all rods, reels, gear, and bait rigged up and ready to go for you.  We will meet at one of the lower Kenai river boat launches and set out on our day of fishing from there.  Start times and meeting locations are usually set up with a phone call closer to your trip.  Choose from fishing out of a power boat or a drift boat on you trip. Kenai River Trip

When the fishing is good on a kenai river trip there is little time for sitting around.  Here Kim and Jeff are excited about a great net job on a sockeye salmon.

A Good kenai River Trip for Sockeye Salmon should be scheduled for the middle of June and from the middle of July until the second week in August.  Fishing for Sockeye Salmon begins in June on the Kenai river and will last until mid august some years.  There are two runs of sockeye salmon on the Kenai river.  The first run which is known as the russian river run of sockeye salmon which opens on June 11th and usually peaks around the 20th of June.  The second run of sockeye salmon will start filtering in with the end of the first run and should peak around the middle of July.  The second run of fish in many recent years has brought hundreds of thousands of fish into the system.  Usually by the second week in August the fishing has passed its peak for sockeye salmon and we are moving on to rainbow trout and silver salmon fishing.

If you are in for a fun and exciting Kenai river trip lets chase some sockeye salmon.  We will get to one of my favorite gravel bars in either a drift boat or power boat and set up for a great day of fishing.  The limit of sockeye salmon per person per day is 3 unless fish and game releases an emergency order to allow more fish to be harvested.  When this happens it usually goes up to 6 per person.

KENAI RIVER

The KENAI RIVER is a complex and dynamic system, providing excellent habitat for fisheries.  This excellent habitat helps produce lots of salmon, trout, and more.  All five species of Pacific salmon return to the Kenai River every year, including Chinook (king salmon), coho (silver salmon), chum, pink, and sockeye salmon.  Though the pink salmon only return in big numbers on even number years and there isn’t very many chum salmon that enter the Kenai River.  Other fish species in the Kenai river drainage include rainbow trout, Dolly Varden, and arctic graylingAll of these species can be targeted in a guided fishing trip on the Kenai River or Kenai peninsula. Imagine floating down glacial blue waters, surrounded by snow capped mountains, forested lands, and possible wildlife around every bend of the river, all while waiting for the tremendous ‘take down’ on your rod by any one of the five salmon or other fish species. From peaceful and serene, to action packed and adrenaline rushing……this is what you will experience when your line goes down and everyone yells, “FISH ON!”.  Once the fish is brought to the boat, your guide will help you cherish the memory by taking pictures of your epic catch with a backdrop of glacial waters and mountains. Termination Dust above Kenai Lake Every trip down the Kenai River, whether it’s in a drift boat or powerboat, is one of comfort and space.  To help with those chilly mornings, your guide will have hot coffee to keep you warm.  If you’re looking for a relaxing and fun experience on the Kenai River to fish for a chance for a catch of a lifetime.  Give us a call to discuss your trip plans at 907-382-6808 and BOOK TODAY!

Kenai River Rainbow Trout Fishing

June 11th is the day that the entire Kenai River is open to rainbow trout fishing.  We will start our season off fishing the Middle Kenai river in a drift boat until the 15th of June.  This allows us to fish in a preferred section of the river that is closed to the use of power boats.  Once the river opens up to the use of motors in this section we will then offer guided trips with the power boat.  Drift boat trips will still be offered if this is your preferred boat to fish out of or if we are fishing in the Upper Kenai river.  Both Boats are effective ways to pursue Kenai river rainbow trout. kasilof river drift boat powerboat1           Kenai river Rainbow trout fishing will continue to be good through the end of June.  In July the rainbow trout fishing tends to tapper off a little but then picks back up again in early August.  In August September and October Kenai River rainbow trout fishing will continue to be good.  The Kenai river offers excellent opportunities for trophy fish on both fly and light tackle.  Our Guide service will supply all tackle, flies, waders (if needed), rain gear (if you do not have your own) and rods needed for your trip.  We also will have water, hot coffee, and snacks on board.  You will need: sunglasses, extra layers of clothing, a packed lunch, and a valid fishing license for the day. Along with guided Kenai river rainbow trout fishing trips, we also offer guided king salmon fishing, silver salmon fishing, sockeye salmon fishing, dolly varden fishing, arctic grayling fishing, and steelhead fishing depending on the time of the season.   All of these species of fish make for an exciting adventure in Alaska.  I fish most every day during the South Central Alaska fishing season and take great pride in showing a quality trip to our guests.  Give us a call or contact us here on the site and we will get you lined up on a great fishing trip on the Kenai Peninsula or surrounding areas here in Alaska. Alaska fishing season

20121030-153841.jpg The Alaska fishing season is over for us here at Drifting on the Fly now.  The cool 5 am mornings are now replaced with well below freezing temps, wind and snow now for months ahead. My 2012 season is over here in Alaska and I look forward to next years Alaska fishing season already. I While getting my gear in order for the long winter ahead I was able to slip out and enjoy the kenai river for a couple afternoons. The fishing was incredible and I hated to leave it. Here are a couple pictures from my last day on the Kenai river fly fishing for rainbow trout and steelhead my last few days of the 2012 season. 20121102-151837.jpg I caught this steelhead on the Anchor river using a six weight z axis switch rod 20121102-151854.jpg 20121102-151910.jpg 20121102-151919.jpg Brian of Wilderness Way looks a little chilli as we motor back up stream for another drift.  We had an epic day on the river today and I look forward to getting back out there next spring.  Who knows maybe there will be a 20 Pound fish on the end of my line next time?
