Officially Spring on the Kenai Peninsula

It has been a long winter here in Alaska with close to record breaking snows in South Central and the kenai peninsula, hopefully that is behind us for a few months now. Longer days and nicer weather seem to be upon us! The Kenai River Fishing season will be upon us before we know it here in Alaska, though we are getting out once in a while now and hitting our favorite holes on the warmer days. Give us a call and lets talk about booking your next guided kenai river fishing trip. tight lines scott sager

The Kenai river runs fast in July and Centennial park has a nice back eddie with place to park your boat while you are parking your rig after launching.  If you plan on fishing the top half of the lower kenai river this is a great place to launch your boat.  I enjoy fishing sunkin island, poachers cove, river quest, big eddie and a few other runs that are easily accessible from Centennial park. business phone: 907-382-6808 or send an inquiry here! UPPER KENAI RIVER BOAT LAUNCH

DRIVING DIRECTIONS TO THE UPPER KENAI RIVER BOAT LAUNCH View UPPER KENAI RIVER BOAT LAUNCH in a larger map Visit AK State Parks for more about the upper Kenai river boat launch. Located at the Kenai Lake bridge in Cooper Landing the upper Kenai river boat launch is a great place to access the river.  Right at the boat launch is a great place to try an catch a rainbow trout or dolly varden if you do not have access to a boat.  Here we will launch the drift boat for a days float trip down the Kenai river to Sportsman’s or Jim’s landing.  The time of year varies when we meet at this location.  This section of the Kenai river is good fly fishing or spin fishing at times for Rainbow Trout and Dolly Varden.  The salmon fishing can be good for the second run of  sockeye salmon (Reds) and silver salmon as well.    This is a drift only setting so there are no power boats allowed from Kenai Lake down to Skilak lake. Guided River Trip Rate $250 per person *LARGE GROUPS WELCOME *LODGING PACKAGES AVAILABLE *EXCLUSIVE BOAT PACKAGES -2 PERSON EXCLUSIVE STARTING AT $750.00 A DAY -3 PERSON EXCLUSIVE STARTING AT $950.00 A DAY contact details, business phone: 907-382-6808 or send an inquiry here!

UPPER SKILAK LAKE BOAT LAUNCH

DIRECTIONS TO THE UPPER SKILAK LAKE BOAT LAUNCH View DIRECTIONS TO UPPER SKILAK LAKE BOAT LAUNCH in a larger map Upper Skilak Lake boat launch is a great place to camp, picnic, fish, view wildlife and pull your boat from a long day fishing the Kenai river canyon fishing for rainbow trout, dolly varden, silver salmon or sockeye salmon.  I have seen black bears, brown bears, moose, and eagles at different times right at the boat launch.  Here you will also find some of the most scenic camping on the kenai peninsula.  If you plan on Shuttling your vehicle you can do that yourself or Wildman’s shuttle service will do it for you.  You can call them at 907-595-1456 to find out about pricing.  From the mouth of the Kenai river to the boat launch is about 8 miles.  The weather is very unpredictable on the lake and with a small motor pushing a drift boat you have to be very careful on the days that you choose to make this trip. We offer trips through the Kenai Canyon and will be happy to line you up on a days fishing.  If you are interested contact us here or give us a call at 907-382-6808 and we will get you lined up! business phone: 907-382-6808 or send an inquiry here!

LOWER SKILAK LAKE BOAT LAUNCH

Here there is camping and the lower skilak lake boat launch. We launch here mainly for drift boat trips on the middle section of the Kenai River.  For most trips we will meet at Bing’s Landing and leave your rig there.  Then travel to Lower Skilak Lake boat launch together.  From here we will cross 2 miles of skilak lake and enter the mouth of the Kenai river.  This is where we will start fishing for the day.  The middle Kenai river is on of my favorite floats.  The opportunity to catch a giant rainbow trout or limit on silver salmon is very high at different time of the year.  At the end of the day your rig will be at the take out. business phone: 907-382-6808 or send an inquiry here!

Dolly Varden

wayne leslie Dolly varden guide trips on the Kenai river are available throughout the guide season on the Kenai peninsula and Alaska.  Some of the longer hikes into the Kenai River can produce the best fish.  Also I find that the more effort it takes me to get to the river the less competition I find for my favorite fishing spots.  This particular trail leads us into the middle Kenai River and is three miles from the parking lot.  We are happy to share information with you so give us a call and we will do our best to point you in the right direction.  If a do it yourself fishing trip isn’t something that you are interested in we are happy to take you on a guided trip for any of the species found on the Kenai Peninsula.   The Kenai River offers a variety of species to fish for and dolly varen is one of them.  Year round we can find Dolly Varden in the Kenai River just like this one.  This day was beautiful and a balmy 29 degrees.  Dead drifting the right color egg pattern fooled this fish.    Dolly Varden in mid February on the middle Kenai River. Good fishing, Scott Sager 907-382-6808

WILLIE PREDATOR POWER BOAT

Drifting on the Fly, LLC proudly added a Willie Predator power boat to the business. The boat is 20 feet long and is 72 inches wide and is powered by a 50 horse power Mercury motor and has a 9.9  horse power Mercury motor for secondary power. Though running a drift boat on the Kenai River for salmon, Dolly Varden and rainbow trout has its place, the power boat has its benefits as well.

The use of a powerboat for rainbow trout fishing on the middle Kenai River is a very effective way to have a chance at big Kenai River rainbow trout. This boat also allows us to easily fish the lower Kenai River for king salmon.  With a 50-horse power engine on the back of the boat running multiple drifts through a hole can be done in no time.

The option to fish for rainbow trout, silver salmon, or sockeye salmon on the middle river in a power boat is now available.  I have owned and run power boats for years and it is nice to finally add one to our guided fishing operation.

We are looking forward to another great fishing season. Booking a guide trip on the kenai river with Drifting on the Fly easy!

Alaska fly out fishing trips

Drifting On The Fly, LLC
Alaska fly out fishing trips are a great way to experience the state and make for a hardcore fishing adventure that you will never forget. Since 2003 we have been working hard at exploring remote rivers in Alaska so that we can offer back country trips as a part of our operation.  I have fished many rivers only accessed by float plane and in June of 2009 we traveled to the headwaters of King Salmon river to start a week long float.  A great group of guys and committed fly anglers in search of Arctic Grayling, Arctic Char, pike, king salmon and Rainbow Trout!  We put this short video of the trip together to share with you.  I hope that you find watching the video as interesting as we did making it! The video can be found on You tube. If you are interested in an extreme trip in the wilds of Alaska give us a call to find out more on how you get it booked today!  These kind of trips are not for everyone but for groups that don’t mind roughing it a bit it can be quit an experience. Tight lines, Scott

KENAI RIVER TROUT FISHING

Drifting On The Fly, LLC
Kenai river trout fishing in the winter can be good one day and just OK the next.  Inconsistent temperatures has a lot to do with this.  The peak season of kenai river trout fishing is June, August, September and October. The first weekend of Dec. was beautiful on the Kenai river.  We didn’t catch a ton of rainbow trout but enough to keep us motivated.  Skilak lake is now starting to freeze over and wade fishing opportunities are about all that is available now.  The weather was excellent today with temperatures over 30 degrees!  I wasn’t out on the Kenai river but I know a few people that took full advantage and look forward to the report.  Winter fishing is a great time of year to get out on the Kenai river, so pick a window of good weather and get outside!  Good luck and we’ll see you out there. Keep us in mind for your summer trip to the kenai peninsula as well.  If you would like to inquire about a Kenai river trout fishing trip give us a call. Peak season kenai river trout fishing trips are getting very popular.  Make sure if you are interested in this special time of year that you book early in the year to ensure your spot on the boat!  We have many guided fishing trip opportunities on the kenai river and surrounding areas so gives us a ring and lets talk about your next fishing trip to Alaska!.     Tight Lines, Scott
