Today is the Rainbow Trout season opener on the Kenai River, June 11th. Get out your smolt and flesh fly patterns and enjoy some potentially great rainbow trout fishing. This is a great time of year to pursue trout, they are hungry and willing to take traditional flies, which is always a lot of fun. The mouth of the Kenai River from Skilak lake five miles down stream is closed to all motorized vessels until June 15th! This is set into place because of the trumpeter swans that are nesting in the area.

It has been a long winter here in Alaska with close to record breaking snows in South Central and the kenai peninsula, hopefully that is behind us for a few months now. Visit AK State Parks for more about the upper Kenai river boat launch.Located at the Kenai Lake bridge in Cooper Landing the upper Kenai river boat launch is a great place to access the river. Right at the boat launch is a great place to try an catch a rainbow trout or dolly varden if you do not have access to a boat. Here we will launch the drift boat for a days float trip down the Kenai river to Sportsman’s or Jim’s landing. The time of year varies when we meet at this location. This section of the Kenai river is good fly fishing or spin fishing at times for Rainbow Trout and Dolly Varden. The salmon fishing can be good for the second run of sockeye salmon (Reds) and silver salmon as well. First run of Kenai River King SalmonOpportunities at for kenai river king salmon fishing starts in early to the middle of May. Our drift boat makes is possible to navigate through the shallow Kenai River and get to concentrated first runs of king salmon. By the first of June the Kenai river is usually high enough that we will start running our powerboat until the end of King Salmon season on the Kenai River. The best thing about being here for the first run of king salmon is there is much less competition on the water. The run isn’t as big as the July run of kings and is not as popular. This is sometimes beneficial to the anglers because of fewer boats on the water. The first run of king salmon peaks in numbers by the middle of June and strong daily numbers will appear until the second run start to show up.Second run of Kenai river king salmonThe second run of king salmon is bigger on average than the first run of fish. This is a very popular run of king salmon because they appear in the summer. The Kenai Peninsula in the nicest month is indescribable. There are two to three times more fish in the second run of king salmon on the Kenai River than the first run. The use of bait also opens July first (sometimes earlier). The use of bait opens more techniques in which we can pursue these fish. Wrapping quick fish for example tends to produce more fish than an unwrapped one most of the time. We also back bounce, back troll, and side drift with cured eggs. The second run has a lot of good characteristics but it also brings in a lot more pressure to the river. When it comes to pursuing a trophy don’t rule out the first run because the standing world record was caught in May!Cost for guide trip:

Rainbow trout fishing the Kenai river is always something I look forward too, even on day 100 I still find the motivation to get gear together and make my way to the river. It is always helpful to see the river when the water is very low. At Cooper Landing the Flow was around 600 CFS and below Skilak lake it was flowing around 840 CFS. This gives me a lot of information for the following guide season on where rainbow trout might be holding.
We picked up a few rainbow trout around Princess rapids on the upper Kenai River. The temperature was in the low 20’s all morning and eventually came up to were we could fish without freezing up to bad. Thanks to the Jet-boil we were able to take a break and have some hot coffee.
Not removing the fish from the water on very cold days is a great idea, plus it’s much better for your hands!
I’m sure that leeches and flesh flies would have picked a few fish up but there were a lot of silver salmon spawning. We knew that we would be fighting almost dead silvers all day were we were fishing if we used streamers. Egg patterns seemed to be the ticket and we didn’t pick up many silvers at all. Both dead egg patterns and fresh egg patterns picked up a few rainbow trout and dolly varden.

Drifting on the Fly, LLC proudly added a Willie Predator power boat to the business. The boat is 20 feet long and is 72 inches wide and is powered by a 50 horse power Mercury motor and has a 9.9 horse power Mercury motor for secondary power. Though running a drift boat on the Kenai River for salmon, Dolly Varden and rainbow trout has its place, the power boat has its benefits as well.
The use of a powerboat for rainbow trout fishing on the middle Kenai River is a very effective way to have a chance at big Kenai River rainbow trout. This boat also allows us to easily fish the lower Kenai River for king salmon. With a 50-horse power engine on the back of the boat running multiple drifts through a hole can be done in no time.
The option to fish for rainbow trout, silver salmon, or sockeye salmon on the middle river in a power boat is now available. I have owned and run power boats for years and it is nice to finally add one to our guided fishing operation.

Since 2003 we have been working hard at exploring remote rivers in Alaska so that we can offer back country trips as a part of our operation. I have fished many rivers only accessed by float plane and in June of 2009 we traveled to the headwaters of King Salmon river to start a week long float. A great group of guys and committed fly anglers in search of Arctic Grayling, Arctic Char, pike, king salmon and Rainbow Trout! We put this short video of the trip together to share with you. Kenai river trout fishing in the winter can be good one day and just OK the next. Inconsistent temperatures has a lot to do with this. The peak season of kenai river trout fishing is June, August, September and October.
The first weekend of Dec. was beautiful on the Kenai river. We didn’t catch a ton of rainbow trout but enough to keep us motivated. Skilak lake is now starting to freeze over and wade fishing opportunities are about all that is available now. The weather was excellent today with temperatures over 30 degrees! I wasn’t out on the Kenai river but I know a few people that took full advantage and look forward to the report. Winter fishing is a great time of year to get out on the Kenai river, so pick a window of good weather and get outside! Good luck and we’ll see you out there. If you are visiting the Alaska in the fall and the weather is right for you, Homer alaska Lingcod and halibut fishing can be very good. Be sure to dress for a colder days of fishing though. You can always take off layers but if you don’t have them you cant put them on! Be prepared for 25 – 50 degrees after mid September. This is my best lingcod to date! 60+ pounds!

Just because it’s getting a little cold doesn’t mean that there are not some great fishing opportunities on the Kenai peninsula. We had a great day in late Sept. and the best part was that we were the only boat out there! Weather in the fall can be very unpredictable.
