The season is here and if you are interested in a hard fighting fish that will reward you with long runs, cartwheels and jumps before you bring it to hand, this is your trip. Alaska fly out fishing

Alaska fly out fishing is one of the best ways to see the state and to get into some of the best fly fishing waters in the world. Today we fished for arctic grayling in a high mountain setting. The folks caught over a hundred fish with some reaching 16-17 inches. On a 4 weight fly rod with 6x tippet, the larger fish put up an excellent struggle. Some won and some didn’t. All of them were put back unharmed for the next group though! If you are interest in some of the best grayling fishing that i have found on the fly or light spin give us a call anytime. 20130727-085315.jpg20130727-085330.jpg20130727-085322.jpg20130727-085359.jpg 20130727-085434.jpg 20130727-085442.jpg 20130727-085455.jpg 20130727-085503.jpg 20130727-085516.jpg Prices vary depending on the length of the flight.

Resurrection bay fly fishing

Resurrection bay fly fishing when the silver salmon are in is a great way to spend a day in Alaska. No wind and 75 degrees is a recipe for a great day on the salt. I was throwing a Jim teeny super magnum sinking line and was able to entice a lot of silver salmon to take the fly. 20130715-155541.jpg 20130717-125632.jpg Many other species were caught on bait and tackle but whenever I can entice a fish to take the fly it makes the day so much sweeter! Fly fishing or just fishing trips are available and we are happy to Getty lined up. Give us a call at 907-382-6808 or email is from here on the sight.

Kenai River Trip

driftingonthefly.com

When the fishing is good on a kenai river trip there is little time for sitting around.  Here Kim and Jeff are excited about a great net job on a sockeye salmon.

A Good kenai River Trip for Sockeye Salmon should be scheduled for the middle of June and from the middle of July until the second week in August.  Fishing for Sockeye Salmon begins in June on the Kenai river and will last until mid august some years.  There are two runs of sockeye salmon on the Kenai river.  The first run which is known as the russian river run of sockeye salmon which opens on June 11th and usually peaks around the 20th of June.  The second run of sockeye salmon will start filtering in with the end of the first run and should peak around the middle of July.  The second run of fish in many recent years has brought hundreds of thousands of fish into the system.  Usually by the second week in August the fishing has passed its peak for sockeye salmon and we are moving on to rainbow trout and silver salmon fishing.

If you are in for a fun and exciting Kenai river trip lets chase some sockeye salmon.  We will get to one of my favorite gravel bars in either a drift boat or power boat and set up for a great day of fishing.  The limit of sockeye salmon per person per day is 3 unless fish and game releases an emergency order to allow more fish to be harvested.  When this happens it usually goes up to 6 per person.

Kenai Peninsula Steelhead Fishing Guide trips will give you a greater chance at success on these hard fighting fish.  We have spent much of our time studying and fishing the local Kenai Peninsula steelhead fishing water.  The 3 main rivers on the Kenai Peninsula that we fish for steelhead are the Kasilof river, the Anchor river, and Deep Creek.  All 3 rivers have great fishing opportunities for sizable steelhead, dolly varden, king salmon and silver salmon.

Kasilof River Steelhead fishing

We will start our kenai peninsula steelhead fishing guide trips out on the Kasilof river.   In early to mid April most years the Kasilof river starts to fish well for steelhead.  There are good wade fishing opportunities in the start of the season and then drift boat fishing opportunities when the ice is cleared from the launch.  The river is shallow at this time of year and fish can be spooky.  Swinging flies, dead drifting nymphs and egg patterns and even casting and striping flies has produced steelhead on the Kasilof river.  Spring steelhead opportunities will last until about throughout the first week in June.  Then the majority of the fish have made their way back to the ocean and will not return until around the first of September.  Fall steelhead fishing on the Kasilof river can also produce a lot of fish.  Kenai Peninsula steelhead fishing guide Trips will be offered until the middle of October when colder weather usually runs us off the river.  Kasilof river steelhead fishing guide trips are offered to both spin and fly anglers.

Anchor river and Deep Creek steelhead fishing

The Anchor river and Deep Creek are also located on the Kenai Peninsula and are walk and wade fishing streams only.  We have explored and fished these rivers for years as well and know them by heart and timing.  Steelhead usually start to show up here in late august but we don’t really start targeting steelhead until the second week in September.  These streams are smaller than the Kasilof river but have produced a lot of fish.  I have seen tides bring in a big push of fish and between a couple of anglers have hooked up on dozens of fish.  Again swinging and nymph fishing will catch fish but egg patterns will dominate.  These fish like resident rainbow trout key in on the salmon spawn and can’t resist the right size and color combination!

KENAI RIVER

The KENAI RIVER is a complex and dynamic system, providing excellent habitat for fisheries.  This excellent habitat helps produce lots of salmon, trout, and more.  All five species of Pacific salmon return to the Kenai River every year, including Chinook (king salmon), coho (silver salmon), chum, pink, and sockeye salmon.  Though the pink salmon only return in big numbers on even number years and there isn’t very many chum salmon that enter the Kenai River.  Other fish species in the Kenai river drainage include rainbow trout, Dolly Varden, and arctic graylingAll of these species can be targeted in a guided fishing trip on the Kenai River or Kenai peninsula. Imagine floating down glacial blue waters, surrounded by snow capped mountains, forested lands, and possible wildlife around every bend of the river, all while waiting for the tremendous ‘take down’ on your rod by any one of the five salmon or other fish species. From peaceful and serene, to action packed and adrenaline rushing……this is what you will experience when your line goes down and everyone yells, “FISH ON!”.  Once the fish is brought to the boat, your guide will help you cherish the memory by taking pictures of your epic catch with a backdrop of glacial waters and mountains. Termination Dust above Kenai Lake Every trip down the Kenai River, whether it’s in a drift boat or powerboat, is one of comfort and space.  To help with those chilly mornings, your guide will have hot coffee to keep you warm.  If you’re looking for a relaxing and fun experience on the Kenai River to fish for a chance for a catch of a lifetime.  Give us a call to discuss your trip plans at 907-382-6808 and BOOK TODAY!

Kenai River Rainbow Trout Fishing

June 11th is the day that the entire Kenai River is open to rainbow trout fishing.  We will start our season off fishing the Middle Kenai river in a drift boat until the 15th of June.  This allows us to fish in a preferred section of the river that is closed to the use of power boats.  Once the river opens up to the use of motors in this section we will then offer guided trips with the power boat.  Drift boat trips will still be offered if this is your preferred boat to fish out of or if we are fishing in the Upper Kenai river.  Both Boats are effective ways to pursue Kenai river rainbow trout. kasilof river drift boat powerboat1           Kenai river Rainbow trout fishing will continue to be good through the end of June.  In July the rainbow trout fishing tends to tapper off a little but then picks back up again in early August.  In August September and October Kenai River rainbow trout fishing will continue to be good.  The Kenai river offers excellent opportunities for trophy fish on both fly and light tackle.  Our Guide service will supply all tackle, flies, waders (if needed), rain gear (if you do not have your own) and rods needed for your trip.  We also will have water, hot coffee, and snacks on board.  You will need: sunglasses, extra layers of clothing, a packed lunch, and a valid fishing license for the day. Along with guided Kenai river rainbow trout fishing trips, we also offer guided king salmon fishing, silver salmon fishing, sockeye salmon fishing, dolly varden fishing, arctic grayling fishing, and steelhead fishing depending on the time of the season.   All of these species of fish make for an exciting adventure in Alaska.  I fish most every day during the South Central Alaska fishing season and take great pride in showing a quality trip to our guests.  Give us a call or contact us here on the site and we will get you lined up on a great fishing trip on the Kenai Peninsula or surrounding areas here in Alaska. Guided Kasilof River King Salmon Fishing

RICH KETTERMAN KING SALMON Headed to the Kenai Peninsula in search of a Guided Kasilof River King Salmon Fishing? Consider the Kasilof River a great option!  This fishery is the located 12 mile from Soldotna Alaska and is the sister river to the Kenai River.  It is also a drift boat only King Salmon fishery which means there are no motors allowed and pressure is way less than on the Kenai River, though popularity is growing every year. kasilof river drift boat The Kasilof river has two distinctive runs of King Salmon. The First run of fish start to show up around the middle of May and usually peaks by the middle of June.  These early run Kings will typically run between 20 and 30 pounds with an occasional fish weighing over 30 pounds.  During the early season the river is much lower than it is in late June and July.  It is still cold in the high country and the runoff isn’t as heavy yet.  This is the time to come if you are looking to hook a King Salmon on the fly.  As the water rises there is more glacier silt that clouds the river and less bank fishing opportunity to fly fish. The second run of Kasilof River King Salmon start to show up near the end of June mixing in with the remainder of the first run fish and will keep coming in through the end of King salmon season.  July 31st is the last day that we are allowed to target these fish.  These fish tend to be quite a bit bigger than the first run of fish, averaging 30-40 pounds and with many fish caught every year reaching 50 pounds or larger. The Kasilof river offers some great fishing opportunities, chances to see wildlife and is in a very peaceful setting.  Sit back, relax and wait for one of these large, hard fighting fish to latch onto your line.  If you are interested in a guided King Salmon fishing trip on the Kenai Peninsula I think that the Kasilof river is a great place to fish. kasilof king salom fishing Give us a call at (907) 382-6808 or contact us through the site by clicking on the book now link!
