Rainbow Trout Season

Today is the Rainbow Trout season opener on the Kenai River, June 11th. Get out your smolt and flesh fly patterns and enjoy some potentially great rainbow trout fishing. This is a great time of year to pursue trout, they are hungry and willing to take traditional flies, which is always a lot of fun. The mouth of the Kenai River from Skilak lake five miles down stream is closed to all motorized vessels until June 15th! This is set into place because of the trumpeter swans that are nesting in the area. Officially Spring on the Kenai Peninsula

It has been a long winter here in Alaska with close to record breaking snows in South Central and the kenai peninsula, hopefully that is behind us for a few months now. Longer days and nicer weather seem to be upon us! The Kenai River Fishing season will be upon us before we know it here in Alaska, though we are getting out once in a while now and hitting our favorite holes on the warmer days. BINGS STATE PARK AND BOAT LAUNCH

Bings boat Landing is located on Bings road in Sterling Alaska. Bing’s landing and state park a lot to offer visitors and residents too. This 126 acre park has 36 campsites, picnic sites, a picnic shelter, trails, and of course a boat launch. Bing’s boat landing is centrally located in the middle section of the Kenai river. It is the last boat landing before you reach Naptown rapids so if you are not an experienced boat operator make sure you make this landing. For drift boat trips we will meet here in the morning and leave your rig in the parking area. Then we will drive in my vehicle to the Lower Skilak lake boat launch which is about 20 minutes away. Here we will Launch and make our way down the middle kenai river back to bing’s landing. This is a very scenic trip and some consider it to be the best rainbow trout fishing on the kenai river at times. If we are using the power boat we will meet at the boat launch and make our way up or down river to fish. The use of the motor allows us to end up at bing’s landing again at the end of the day. Bing’s landing and state park is does have a pay to park fee station and is strickly enforced so make sure you check in.

KENAI RIVER KING SALMON FISHING

First run of Kenai River King Salmon Opportunities at for kenai river king salmon fishing starts in early to the middle of May. Our drift boat makes is possible to navigate through the shallow Kenai River and get to concentrated first runs of king salmon. By the first of June the Kenai river is usually high enough that we will start running our powerboat until the end of King Salmon season on the Kenai River. The best thing about being here for the first run of king salmon is there is much less competition on the water. The run isn’t as big as the July run of kings and is not as popular. This is sometimes beneficial to the anglers because of fewer boats on the water. The first run of king salmon peaks in numbers by the middle of June and strong daily numbers will appear until the second run start to show up. Second run of Kenai river king salmon The second run of king salmon is bigger on average than the first run of fish. This is a very popular run of king salmon because they appear in the summer. The Kenai Peninsula in the nicest month is indescribable. There are two to three times more fish in the second run of king salmon on the Kenai River than the first run. The use of bait also opens July first (sometimes earlier). The use of bait opens more techniques in which we can pursue these fish. Wrapping quick fish for example tends to produce more fish than an unwrapped one most of the time. We also back bounce, back troll, and side drift with cured eggs. The second run has a lot of good characteristics but it also brings in a lot more pressure to the river. When it comes to pursuing a trophy don’t rule out the first run because the standing world record was caught in May! RAINBOW TROUT FISHING THE KENAI RIVER

Rainbow trout fishing the Kenai river is always something I look forward too, even on day 100 I still find the motivation to get gear together and make my way to the river. It is always helpful to see the river when the water is very low. At Cooper Landing the Flow was around 600 CFS and below Skilak lake it was flowing around 840 CFS. This gives me a lot of information for the following guide season on where rainbow trout might be holding. We picked up a few rainbow trout around Princess rapids on the upper Kenai River. The temperature was in the low 20’s all morning and eventually came up to were we could fish without freezing up to bad. Thanks to the Jet-boil we were able to take a break and have some hot coffee.

Not removing the fish from the water on very cold days is a great idea, plus it’s much better for your hands! I’m sure that leeches and flesh flies would have picked a few fish up but there were a lot of silver salmon spawning. We knew that we would be fighting almost dead silvers all day were we were fishing if we used streamers. Egg patterns seemed to be the ticket and we didn’t pick up many silvers at all. Both dead egg patterns and fresh egg patterns picked up a few rainbow trout and dolly varden. TIGHT LINES, SCOTT SAGER 907-382-6808

KENAI RIVER FLY FISHING

Headed to the Kenai river fly fishing for a few days this weekend. The Kenai River rainbow trout have been feeding on flesh, egg, and leech patterns. Hopefully the temps will allow us to get some full days of fishing in. Though it is not going to be as warm as it has been all week we expect the bite to be on! The Silver salmon continue to spawn and I look for the Rainbow trout to be predictable and hold up behind them. Food sources aren’t as good as they have been in August and septrmber so finding a concentration of fish will be key. Fishing in harsh conditions in Alaska is the norm. When preparing for your fishing vacation make sure that you pack good layers of clothing and rain gear. Prepare for the worse and hope for the best is the best frame of mind to be in. The fishing season is well on its way and that means being outdoors most of the time! WILLIE PREDATOR POWER BOAT

Drifting on the Fly, LLC proudly added a Willie Predator power boat to the business. The boat is 20 feet long and is 72 inches wide and is powered by a 50 horse power Mercury motor and has a 9.9 horse power Mercury motor for secondary power. Though running a drift boat on the Kenai River for salmon, Dolly Varden and rainbow trout has its place, the power boat has its benefits as well.

The use of a powerboat for rainbow trout fishing on the middle Kenai River is a very effective way to have a chance at big Kenai River rainbow trout. This boat also allows us to easily fish the lower Kenai River for king salmon. With a 50-horse power engine on the back of the boat running multiple drifts through a hole can be done in no time.

The option to fish for rainbow trout, silver salmon, or sockeye salmon on the middle river in a power boat is now available. I have owned and run power boats for years and it is nice to finally add one to our guided fishing operation.

Alaska fly out fishing trips are a great way to experience the state and make for a hardcore fishing adventure that you will never forget. Since 2003 we have been working hard at exploring remote rivers in Alaska so that we can offer back country trips as a part of our operation. I have fished many rivers only accessed by float plane and in June of 2009 we traveled to the headwaters of King Salmon river to start a week long float. A great group of guys and committed fly anglers in search of Arctic Grayling, Arctic Char, pike, king salmon and Rainbow Trout! We put this short video of the trip together to share with you.
