Starting them off right
Starting them off right by giving my buddies kid an experience of driving the boat after a day of Sockeye salmon fishing on the Kenai river, under close supervision of course.
Kenai river salmon fishing is a great way to spend quality time with the family. Today I fished a family from Talahasie Florida. A grandfather, daughter and granddaughters are on a fishing trip to Alaska. Ken the grandfather can’t get around like he used to so we had him in the captains seat along a good gravel bar. We will do whatever we can to make your experience as good as it can be when you book a kenai river fishing trip with us. Our boats are large, spacious and very stable. If you have a disability or can’t get around like you could before we can work with you so you too can have the experience of kenai river salmon fishing.
The girls where there more to enjoy spending time with their grandfather than to fish but I think they had a good time fishing too?
If you would like to spend a day sockeye salmon fishing on the Kenai river give us a call at 907-382-6808 or check us out at www.driftingonthefly.com. Remember that rainbow trout fishing is picking up fast and there are a few silver salmon hitting the kasilof and Kenai rivers now!
Fishing for sockeye salmon in the Kenai river can be a lot of fun. Today’s group found a limit of fish with ease. Once you are dialed in on the techniques and get the feel for fishing for sockeye salmon they can be easy to catch. These fish are hard fight, very acrobatic and can flat out destroy gear. Once you have landed the fish you are allowed to keep 6 per person right now or release it depending what you want to do. This group decided to only keep what they though they could eat over the winter. Sockeye salmon are tasty anyway you decide to cook them and I promise there will be no color added to the fillet!
Chrome bright sockeye salmon are best for taking home. If you catch a fish that has been in the river to long I will recommend that you release it and try to catch a fresher fish. The best part of guided sockeye salmon fishing is being able to get to productive gravel bars and away from the mass crowds. Sockeye salmon fishing is very popular and you might have to share a gravel bar but I will do my best to keep you out of a combat fishing zone.
Tying flies and getting ready for the Kenai river silver salmon fly fishing this fall.
Large fly boxes are great for the boat but remember to let them air out at night so that your hooks don’t rust. It could get really expensive if you have the box full of flies.
Umpqua’s large boat box is now equipped with anti rust technology. I hope that it helps in our harsh Alaska weather!
Silver salmon on the Fly can be very productive. I have seen the Fly out fish tackle many times. It is a different presentation to the fish and with the right pattern and color can be deadly. One of my favorite patterns is a dark brown leach. I’m a huge fan of natural colors but there are days that bright colors will work best too. I think this is one of my most favorite silver salmon fly fishing pictures. It shows everything that i can’t tell you about fly fishing for silver salmon. Like any fish we have to work for them harder some days others but if you are a proficient caster I believe we can get you into some fish.

Our company is happy to handle large groups. Our guides are willing to work together and keep the group on the same gravel bar if at all possible. If we are boat fishing the boats will hang together in the runs so that camaraderie is enjoyed by everyone. In just a few hours on a evening half day sockeye salmon trip this group of anglers did very well. We don’t often offer half day trips but we will provide them if requested. Salmon fishing is at its peak right now and it should hold up for another couple of weeks. They ended up with a large stringer and had a great experience. Large groups are welcome on the kenai river. We are able to handle groups of 2-20 anglers per day, we can accommodate up to 4 anglers per boat. Fishing gear, hot coffee, water, and snacks are provided with your trip. You will need a fishing license, a packed lunch, and rain gear. We can provide rain gear and waders if requested.
Booking a fishing trip with us is very easy. Give us a call or contact us here for more details

Hanging this afternoon on the Kenai river sockeye salmon fishing. Waiting for the next push of fish to make their way up the river.
Before to long the girls where back kenai river sockeye salmon fishing and we had a few fish for them to take home in just a couple hours.
The fish where running super tight to the bank today so this makes it very easy to cast your line out far enough.
Later in the afternoon we went rainbow trout fishing. The fish are keying in on the king salmon spawn. We caught plenty of trout and had an awesome time fishing the Kenai river.

I even had a little help getting the boat cleaned up tonight! Thanks ladies!
At the end of every day on the river I clean the boat to make sure it is presentable for the next days fishing. I can’t promise that the fish will bite but I stay up on what is going on on the river and I provide clean high quality gear. If you are looking to book a fishing trip on the Kenai River give us a call. We will be happy to work with you in designing a fishing vacation that you will not forget.
Having this whole high bank to ourselves is not common during the peak of the season, a great reason for evening fishing for sockeye salmon on the Kenai river.
I even had an opportunity to catch a fish for myself today. I don’t usually fish on trips but with just two people I found time to make a few drifts. The sun is out and It is a beautiful day to be sockeye salmon fishing on the kenai river!
Float planes often use the middle kenai river. The fishing is good and there are plenty of places to park and get the plane safely out of the current.
Sockeye salmon fishing in the afternoon can be very productive on the Kenai river. The peak season to fish for sockeye salmon is about July 12th through August 10th most years. Ocean run fish have there own schedule though and these dates can very on either or both ends by a few days. Good sockeye salmon fishing can be accessed in many areas that you can walk into but this is a very popular time of year and these areas can be very congested. This is probably the best reason for hiring Drifting on the Fly for a day trip. We will do our best to find you a productive gravel bar that is not as busy as some of the road side accessible spots. Though there still might be people around it shouldn’t be elbow to elbow.
These folks traveled to Alaska from Arkansas to try their luck out on the Kenai river for sockeye salmon and did very well.
The afternoon fishing can be as good as the morning fishing. Usually others have limited out or called it quits. This means we have a good chance at getting on a great gravel bar. Half day afternoon trips are available and the cost is 200.00 dollars plus tax for a half day fishing trip.
