Kasilof river silver salmon fishing

Headed to the Kasilof river silver salmon fishing on the Kenai peninsula! I’m up early and am noticing that the days are getting a little shorter now. It’s not daylight until about 5 am now. 20120806-094931.jpg On the kasilof river looking for a few silver salmon this morning. The bites been slow but we are sitting perfect on the tide for the fish to show up any minute. 20120806-095052.jpg A day of Kasilof river silver salmon fishing starts early in the morning.  The timing of the tides have a lot to do with our start time though.  We will meet at the Kasilof river bridge at our prearranged time and then run a quick shuttle of vehicles to the take out.  Once this is done our day of fishing will start.  You will need a valid Alaska fishing license, rain gear (we can provide this) and a packed lunch for the day.  I will have hot coffee, snacks and water on the boat for you as well as all the fishing gear needed for the day.  Silvers are a hard fighting fish and are often eager biters.  Give us a call to line up your next Alaska fishing vacation. sockeye salmon fishing

Sockeye Salmon fishing on the Kenai river can be very productive.   Today we are lower in the With almost 1.5 million sockeye salmon that have entered this year the fish are not to hard to find. Now we may start to see a few that are starting to turn but there are still plenty of chrome fish available. It didn’t take this group but a couple hours of sockeye salmon fishing and they have their bag limit. When you have the feel for hooking sockeye salmon they can be easy to catch and coming by in Good numbers Coming by also helps! Rainbow trout and silver salmon season are now upon us. I look forward to this time of year! Personally I don’t think it gets any better. 20120805-094931.jpg If you plan on keeping some sockeye salmon make sure you keep them cool and out of the sun.  Keeping your fish on a stringer does this and it also washes most of the blood out of the fish making them all eat much better.  Bleeding your fish is the single most important thing to do once you have harvested it.  You can bleed your fish by cutting each side of the gills.  Harvesting salmon is part of fishing in Alaska and though we do plenty of catch and release.  Make sure that at the beginning of the day you let us know if you are planning on a day of catch and release or if you would like to harvest a few fish to take home.  Depending on the regulation and the bite we will do our best to provide a quality day on the river for you.

saltwater fishing

Today we went saltwater fishing in Seward Alaska.  It was so late when we got off the water last night we didn’t take the time to hang our catch. We took a couple pictures of the yellow eye with the kids and butchered our catch. The trip was a success and even with a little motion sickness everyone had a great day! Here are a couple pictures after we hit the dock yesterday in Seward after doing some saltwater fishing. 20120804-145416.jpg 20120804-145427.jpg We caught Cod, halibut, yellow eye and silver salmon today on our saltwater fishing trip. Mixed bags are often caught when you book a saltwater trip in Alaska. 20120804-145438.jpg 20120804-145443.jpg Between the halibut and many other species available, the scenery, and a personable captain, saltwater fishing in alaska makes for A great day on the water.  We use reliable and quality captains for our saltwater fishing and if you are interested we will be happy to line a trip up for you while you are here. saltwater fishing in seward alaska

Our trip this morning started off out of the seward harbor. During our hour And a half long boat ride out to the fishing grounds we witnessed the most beautiful surroundings. Here are a couple pictures of some scenery Along the way. 20120803-170655.jpg 20120803-170719.jpg 20120803-170741.jpg 20120803-170813.jpg 20120803-170847.jpg 20120803-170901.jpg I fished the fly rod a few hours today and caught a hand full of black bass and lost a few silver salmon. I just couldn’t get down to the halibut today. Sometimes the halibut will come to the surface if the conditions are right. I took lots of footage with the go pro camera today and forgot to use the still camera more than I should have of fish. I caught halibut, yellow eye, lingcod, black bass, and a few other species of cod fish today on our outing. here is a picture of a nice yellow eye I caught today! 20120803-171703.jpg Today was calm, sunny and flat out beautiful on the water. This is rare for saltwater fishing in Seward alaska but these days do happen. What a lucky group we had out today! 20120803-172050.jpg We are just now headed back in off the water so I’ll post a pic of the rest of the fish some other time. Tight lines and if you would like the opportunity to try something like this for yourself let us line you up. Give us a call at 907-382-6808 or check us out at www.driftingonthefly.com.

Sterling Alaska to Seward alaska

I took a few pictures this morning of the drive from Sterling Alaska to Seward Alaska. It’s about a 75 mile trip each way. I’m up early this morning again to go on a saltwater halibut and silver salmon fishing trip with some local clients. This is a rare opportunity for me with the fishing schedule I have on the Kenai River. 20120803-065920.jpg A view on the Sterling Highway at dawn looking towards Cooper Landing. 20120803-070011.jpg 20120803-070042.jpg This is on the Seward Highway just outside of Moose pass headed towards seward. 20120803-070111.jpg   20120803-070154.jpg Fireweed growing beside the seward highway. 20120803-074223.jpg Road construction at Ptarmigan creek just outside of moose pass slowed us up a little this morning.  I always leave at least a half hour early to allow for construction in Alaska.  You can bet with the short season to work on the roads that you will run into some construction at some point on your trip. 20120803-074243.jpg 20120803-074320.jpg   Enjoy and you will not be able to help from seeing beautiful sites like these along the route from sterling Alaska to Seward Alaska

Starting them off right

Starting them off right by giving my buddies kid an experience of driving the boat after a day of Sockeye salmon fishing on the Kenai river, under close supervision of course. 20120802-180701.jpg

Kenai river salmon fishing

20120801-233228.jpg Kenai river salmon fishing is a great way to spend quality time with the family.  Today I fished a family from Talahasie Florida. A grandfather, daughter and granddaughters are on a fishing trip to Alaska. Ken the grandfather can’t get around like he used to so we had him in the captains seat along a good gravel bar. We will do whatever we can to make your experience as good as it can be when you book a kenai river fishing trip with us.  Our boats are large, spacious and very stable. If you have a disability or can’t get around like you could before we can work with you so you too can have the experience of kenai river salmon fishing. 20120801-233945.jpg 20120801-234204.jpg The girls where there more to enjoy spending time with their grandfather than to fish but I think they had a good time fishing too? If you would like to spend a day sockeye salmon fishing on the Kenai river give us a call at 907-382-6808 or check us out at www.driftingonthefly.com. Remember that rainbow trout fishing is picking up fast and there are a few silver salmon hitting the kasilof and Kenai rivers now!

Sockeye salmon

20120731-131739.jpg Fishing for sockeye salmon in the Kenai river can be a lot of fun. Today’s group found a limit of fish with ease.  Once you are dialed in on the techniques and get the feel for fishing for sockeye salmon they can be easy to catch.  These fish are hard fight, very acrobatic and can flat out destroy gear. Once you have landed the fish you are allowed to keep 6 per person right now or release it depending what you want to do. This group decided to only keep what they though they could eat over the winter. Sockeye salmon are tasty anyway you decide to cook them and I promise there will be no color added to the fillet! 20120731-132456.jpg Chrome bright sockeye salmon are best for taking home.  If you catch a fish that has been in the river to long I will recommend that you release it and try to catch a fresher fish.  The best part of guided sockeye salmon fishing is being able to get to productive gravel bars and away from the mass crowds.  Sockeye salmon fishing is very popular and you might have to share a gravel bar but I will do my best to keep you out of a combat fishing zone.

Kenai river silver salmon fly fishing

20120730-170409.jpg Tying flies and getting ready for the Kenai river silver salmon fly fishing this fall. Large fly boxes are great for the boat but remember to let them air out at night so that your hooks don’t rust. It could get really expensive if you have the box full of flies. 20120730-204929.jpg Umpqua’s large boat box is now equipped with anti rust technology. I hope that it helps in our harsh Alaska weather! silver salmon fishingSilver salmon on the Fly can be very productive.  I have seen the Fly out fish tackle many times.  It is a different presentation to the fish and with the right pattern and color can be deadly.  One of my favorite patterns is a dark brown leach.  I’m a huge fan of natural colors but there are days that bright colors will work best too.  I think this is one of my most favorite silver salmon fly fishing pictures.  It shows everything that i can’t tell you about fly fishing for silver salmon.  Like any fish we have to work for them harder some days others but if you are a proficient caster I believe we can get you into some fish. Large groups

20120730-120536.jpg Our company is happy to handle large groups.  Our guides are willing to work together and keep the group on the same gravel bar if at all possible.  If we are boat fishing the boats will hang together in the runs so that camaraderie is enjoyed by everyone.  In just a few hours on a evening half day sockeye salmon trip this group of anglers did very well. We don’t often offer half day trips but we will provide them if requested.  Salmon fishing is at its peak right now and it should hold up for another couple of weeks. They ended up with a large stringer and had a great experience.  Large groups are welcome on the kenai river. We are able to handle groups of 2-20 anglers per day, we can accommodate up to 4 anglers per boat. Fishing gear, hot coffee, water, and snacks are provided with your trip.  You will need a fishing license, a packed lunch, and rain gear.  We can provide rain gear and waders if requested. Booking a fishing trip with us is very easy.  Give us a call or contact us here for more details Tight lines, Scott Sager Www.driftingonthefly.com
