Resurrection bay fly fishing when the silver salmon are in is a great way to spend a day in Alaska. No wind and 75 degrees is a recipe for a great day on the salt. I was throwing a Jim teeny super magnum sinking line and was able to entice a lot of silver salmon to take the fly.

Kenai river silver salmon fishing this morning. I truly love all fishing in Alaska but silver salmon have to be among the top of the list for many reasons. They are a very aggressive fish under most circumstances and do put on a show once they are hooked. I prefer to cast flies for them but many other techniques work as well. You can catch silver salmon on spinners, hard plastic baits, bait and we have taken them on top water as well. This big Kenai river silver salmon was caught on a chrome hard plastic bait back trolling on the lower kenai river this morning.

Using rubber gloves helps keep scent off my lures and baits while I get them ready to fish. I know scent washes off fast in the current but any edge I can give you on your kenai river silver salmon fishing trip I will try.

Drifting on the fly’s boat dog Tok getting some love while we wait on the next bite. Tok doesn’t get to fish as much as he wants but when requested he loads up with enthusiasm every time. Days we dedicate to back trolling are good days for him to hang out on the river with us.

kasilof river silver salmon fishing today was good. There are still a lot of pink salmon coming into the river. Pinks or also known as humpies are a great fighting fish and provide lots of action for anglers. They are not as desirable for table fare as silvers because they do not freeze as well to eat later. Most of our silver salmon were caught bouncing cured eggs of the bottom of the river. The kasilof river isn’t as clear as some river due to the glacier silt and this is why bait with scent works well for catching fish here

We were just shy of a limit today but that didn’t matter to these folks. We had a great day on the kasilof river and even barbecued some fresh silver salmon on the boat today!

IZAAK WALTON BOAT LAUNCH

Izzak Walton boat launch in located at the moose river bridge in Sterling Alaska. The Izzak walton boat launch and state park has a very nice campground, picnic tables, and outhouses. This is one of my favorite state park facilities located on the Kenai river. The Moose river dumps into the Kenai only a short distance from the boat launch. It is a slow and shallow river and makes it very nice for launching a boat. There is also some great silver salmon fishing here as well when they are running. It is a toss up between meeting here or at bings landing. It usually depends on how busy the boat launch is at bings. If we are headed up river it takes about 15 minutes to pass bings launch up and head on to skilak lake. This is worth it if the wait to launch at bings is very long. BINGS STATE PARK AND BOAT LAUNCH

Bings boat Landing is located on Bings road in Sterling Alaska. Bing’s landing and state park a lot to offer visitors and residents too. This 126 acre park has 36 campsites, picnic sites, a picnic shelter, trails, and of course a boat launch. Bing’s boat landing is centrally located in the middle section of the Kenai river. It is the last boat landing before you reach Naptown rapids so if you are not an experienced boat operator make sure you make this landing. For drift boat trips we will meet here in the morning and leave your rig in the parking area. Then we will drive in my vehicle to the Lower Skilak lake boat launch which is about 20 minutes away. Here we will Launch and make our way down the middle kenai river back to bing’s landing. This is a very scenic trip and some consider it to be the best rainbow trout fishing on the kenai river at times. If we are using the power boat we will meet at the boat launch and make our way up or down river to fish. The use of the motor allows us to end up at bing’s landing again at the end of the day. Bing’s landing and state park is does have a pay to park fee station and is strickly enforced so make sure you check in.

RAINBOW TROUT FISHING THE KENAI RIVER

Rainbow trout fishing the Kenai river is always something I look forward too, even on day 100 I still find the motivation to get gear together and make my way to the river. It is always helpful to see the river when the water is very low. At Cooper Landing the Flow was around 600 CFS and below Skilak lake it was flowing around 840 CFS. This gives me a lot of information for the following guide season on where rainbow trout might be holding. We picked up a few rainbow trout around Princess rapids on the upper Kenai River. The temperature was in the low 20’s all morning and eventually came up to were we could fish without freezing up to bad. Thanks to the Jet-boil we were able to take a break and have some hot coffee.

Not removing the fish from the water on very cold days is a great idea, plus it’s much better for your hands! I’m sure that leeches and flesh flies would have picked a few fish up but there were a lot of silver salmon spawning. We knew that we would be fighting almost dead silvers all day were we were fishing if we used streamers. Egg patterns seemed to be the ticket and we didn’t pick up many silvers at all. Both dead egg patterns and fresh egg patterns picked up a few rainbow trout and dolly varden. TIGHT LINES, SCOTT SAGER 907-382-6808

GUIDED KASILOF RIVER KING SALMON FISHING

Guided Kasilof river King salmon fishing is officially over on the Kenai peninsula now. The end of July marks the end of King salmon fishing on the Kenai peninsula. Though it was a great season we are now geared up and focused on Silver Salmon, Sockeye salmon and rainbow trout fishing now.

I had the pleasure of fishing with my family on the last day of King salmon season and this 53″ Buck took an orange spin and gloe with some cured salmon eggs. We ended up landing this fish more than a mile from where it was hooked!! This is a very large King salmon caught on the Kasilof river and everyone is very proud of it. Our boat has been fishing good and this is a great way to end the King salmon season here in Alaska. Though king fishing season is over look for more pictures and info about king fishing with us in the future from us. The season is really not that far away so if you are interested in a prime date be sure to book early. The last three weeks in July on the Kenai Peninsula seem to book faster and faster each year. ALASKA KENAI RIVER FLYFISHING

Alaska Kenai river flyfishing in the Spring is a great time of year to get your streamer fix. Fishing on the Kenai river is way different than it is during the summer months. Most of the silver salmon are done spawning by now but there are a few fish still in the river. I only noticed about a half dozen fish last weekend in the area I was fishing. I chose to swing leeches and minnow patterns on this outing. An olive leech caught the only fish of the day.

I was by myself when this nice Kenai river rainbow trout slammed my leech pattern. When the water is this low and clear I spend more time looking for rainbows than I do casting. These fish are spooky and if you can spot a fish and cast to it you are more likely to catch it than just slinging line blindly in the water. Look for flashes, dark shapes, spooked bait fish, spawning salmon, etc. Once you train your eye, spotting fish becomes easier than you would think. MARABOU FLIES FOR SILVER SALMON

Tying marabou flies for silver salmon, Spinning marabou can be very productive and fast way to tie flies for Salmon, Rainbow trout, steel head and many other species that take leeches and bait fish. Tying them yourself allows you to get the specific colors that you want and experiment with other color schemes. Start with the hook size of choice and your marabou of choice. I chose fuchsia and black for this fly. This color scheme fishes good for steel head, silvers, pinks, and chum for me. Marabou flies are easy to tie once you understand the basics. -tie on your thread and work back to the shank of the hook. -always Tie in marabou tip first for this fly, leaving the thick stem exposed to wrap with. fly-tying-marabou-001

Wrap forward and tight on the shank with the marabou. It is best to pull the feathers back with your left hand while you wrap. This will keep you from hiding them in the body of the fly and fouling on the tip of the hook. Repeat this until you reach the front of the hook and then tie off your thread. fly-tying-marabou-002
