Guided Kasilof River King Salmon Fishing

Guided Kasilof river King Salmon fishing has been good.  Lots of take downs,  a few fish coming unbuttoned and plenty of fish landed.  Water levels are in very good shape and it’s looking to be a great year for King Salmon fishing on the Kasilof River.  King salmon fishing is also picking up on the Kenai river too.  I have mostly fished the Kasilof river this week but have a few trips are booked for on the Kenai river coming up soon. kasilof-kings-001 kasilof-kings-002 Here is one of the fish we boated on yesterdays adventure with our guide service.  These bright King Salmon are hard hitting and make screaming runs. Most of the fish caught in the last few weeks have had sea lice on them.  This is a good sign of fresh fish in the river. Remember King Salmon season ends at the end of July so it is not to late to get your spot on our boat. You can contact us at www.driftingonthefly.com to book your next guided fishing trip on the Kasilof or Kenai river! Guided Kasilof river fishing trips are 275.00 per person and we can accommodate parties up to 20 people. Tight lines, Scott sager

Kasilof River Salmon Fishing Guide

Today’s report from your Kasilof river salmon fishing guide. Every day has shown improvement and more and more fish are hitting the river.  I believe that this coming week will be the best of the first run of King Salmon.  We’ll just have to be out there and see what happens.  Bait is still producing more fish that plugs for my boat.  With the water level coming up more and more everyday I’ve switched to a larger set of hooks and am now running a longer leader for my eggs and spin and glows.  Larger fish are starting to come into the river, we had one get off the hook today that may have reached 40-45 pounds? kasilof-king-salmon-fishing-013 kasilof-king-salmon-fishing-012 The weather has been awesome, 65-80 degrees on the river this week thus far and not a cloud in the sky!  We hope it continues? Days are long still and there is lots of fishing opportuities on the Kenai peninsula. Guided Kasilof River King Salmon fishing

Guided Kasilof river King Salmon fishing has been very good this week.  Though we are having to work hard for the fish that we do catch. kasilof-king-salmon-fishing-006 kasilof-king-salmon-fishing-008 kasilof-king-salmon-fishing-009 These chrome Kasilof river king salmon where caught on the incoming time on both plugs and spin and glows with cured salmon roe.  Tides heavily influence our start times in the morning.  When you are booking a guided kasilof river king salmon fishing trip we will discuss our start times then or we will wait until the time of the trip gets closer to determine the timing of the start. Pay attention to what the tide is doing and you’ll be sure to find fish moving around.  I’ve found that the incoming tide has produced the best fishing this week. Kenai peninsula fly fishing trip

anchor river, alaska When on a Kenai peninsula fly fishing trip on small rivers for King Salmon  make sure that you try to spend most of your time in a run that will concentrate fish.  These fish are moving upstream with the tide so moving around the stream can just waste time.  Getting out there ahead of high tide and hang out until the outgoing, this can be the most productive time. Good runs are popular during the peak of the season so staking out your sweet spot in advance is very important. fly fishing the anchor river, alaska The Anchor river can be a very productive fishery but for those early season king salmon you may have to put your time in.  Be patient and maybe you’ll pick up a mid May fish on the Kenai Peninsula! I have seen days where we get a good push of fish that each angler hooks multiple fish.  Once you have decided to harvest a fish you must quit fishing.  If you choose to practice catch and release you can fish as long as you would like.   For more information on a guided king salmon trip on the kenai river or surrounding water contact us here anytime. KENAI RIVER RAINBOW TROUT

When fishing if I have the opportunity to get above a hole and watch for a minute, I take full advantage.  Spotting Kenai river rainbow trout is difficult in the glacier tented water but it can be done.  Watching over a gravel bar can be the most productive.  Early in the spring rainbows on the kenai river will cruise in search of food, so look for flashes, anything that is moving, and dark objects that just don’t belong.  Polarized sun glasses really help in this situation. 09-april-steed-trip-010 We spent a few minutes watching this gravel bar, being above it gives you a real advantage in spotting fish. 09-april www.driftingonthefly.com This is a picture lower on the gravel bar, you can see how the higher you get the better the chance of spotting a fish. I have been watching fish move on and off of it for a few minutes now.  It’s time to get a line wet. Take the time on your next outing to just watch for a minute and you’ll be surprised on how many fish you start to see. ANCHOR RIVER KING SALMON FISHING

Anchor river king salmon fishing can be crowded so I prefer to fish in the middle of the night.  Most anglers are in camp or limited out for the days fishing and that’s when I head out onto the water.  Fishing on the Kenai peninsula often means that you will be near other anglers while you are on the stream.  If someone hooks up and is fighting a fish, it is common courtesy that you take your line out of the water and allow them to land their fish.  Be sure to give them room and not to crowd in while they are releasing the fish or moving back into position.  I’ve found that it doesn’t take long to get to know people on the river and for the most part everyone is willing to work together.  Help in doing your part in keeping the streams a positive place for everyone. Anchor River, King fishing Fishing for King Salmon in the spring is popular on the Kenai Penisula. hooked up And this is why!  Sometimes the fishing can be so hot that multiple people are hooked up at the same time.  When this happens, good luck and remember to do your best to keep others in mind.  Give us a call today to line up your next kenai river guide trip or to get away a back country fishing guide trip. ALASKA MOUSE PATTERNS

Alaska mouse patterns can be fished in place through out the summer. Rainbow  Trout on mouse patterns?  This is awesome!  Trout need as many calories as they can consume in the short summers of Alaska.  I’ve seen 10 inch fish take a size 4 mouse pattern, ferociously.  Try dead drifting, swinging, slow or fast strips and you will be sure to have a rainbow on a mouse pattern before long.

mouse-pattern

Tying this fly weedless is also a good idea.  You can then get your mouse into the brush and retrieve it out without worrying as much about loosing it. trout on a mouse I watched my good friend Jeff Murray (www.murraysflyshop.com) raise at least 15 fish on this mouse pattern in the first half hour of this float.  This fish was caught and released in the fall but you can be sure that it is just as productive in the spring.  Note that not all rivers will produce trout on mouse patterns but most rivers in Alaska will with the right conditions. I hope to hear stories of you catching rainbow trout on mouse patterns too! It is always fun to raise fish on dry flies and even more fun to fish a dry that you will not have any problems following. give us a call anytime to line up your next Alaska kenai river guide trip. Have fun tying, Scott Sager www.driftingonthefly.com

KENAI RIVER DRY FLY FISHING

THERE CAN BE SOME VERY GOOD KENAI RIVER DRY FLY FISHING.  June is a great month to be in the middle of some great caddis hatches in Alaska.  Smaller rivers and lakes on the Kenai peninsula have been the most productive when I am look for Rainbow trout on dry flies.  Also look at the side channels of the Kenai river, there are some  great place to find some rainbow trout eager to take a dry fly. Once the salmon show up in good numbers you can fish a dry fly all day long and never have a trout look up.  When you do find fish looking up make sure you have a few caddis patterns to fall back on. elk-hair-caddis-001 I’m a huge fan of peacock hurl, I mix it into most of my favorite patterns. elk-hair-caddis-1 Brown or olive caddis patterns in a size 12 is a go to for us in June. Have a great time tying and we’ll catch you next time, give us a call to book your next Alaska Kenai river guide trip and if the timing is right we will dry fly fish the Kenai river for rainbow trout!
