Kenai Peninsula Fishing Charters

Drifting on the Fly,  A Kenai peninsula fishing charters.  One Great trip we offer is a guided charter on the Kasilof river.  The Kasilof river has good steelhead, king salmon, sockeye salmon and silver salmon runs!  We offer guided trips for all of the above!  King salmon fishing on the Kasilof river was fair yesterday, with some bigger tides pushing in this week we are expecting the fishing to pick up even more.  The egg bite is on, most of the fish are being caught on spin and glows with a small glob of eggs.

The Ninilchik river is now open for the remainder of the month for king salmon fishing. I recommend those that are interested in trying to catch a king salmon on the fly rod to search there. You’ll be able to find the most fish pushing in with the tides so pay attention to what’s going on there or we will be happy to provide a guided trip on one of the kenai peninsula’s rivers for you.

If you have any questions or would like to book a trip this season we are still taking bookings. You can reach us at www.driftingonthefly.com for your next guide trip!

LITTLE SUSITNA RIVER FLY FISHING

Little Susitna river fly fishing can be very productive.  We have hooked many king salmon, silver salmon, and rainbow trout on the fly in this system.  Here is a picture of a king salmon hooked up on the fly rod.  This fish took a purple articulated leech on the swing.  Thanks to John Colmen and Jeff Murray for making the 2008 little Susitna trip a success.  John and Jeff moved the camp boat, set up camp and cooked every day.  Enjoying a great trip and just having them in camp added that much more to a great experience.  You can catch up with these guys deep in the Shenandoah national park fishing for spooky brook trout or on the Shenandoah rivers fly casting for small mouth bass.  If you would enjoy this or if it is close to your neck of the woods look them up at www.murraysflyshop.com.

Thanks again guys and good fishing, Scott Sager Drifting On The Fly, LLC

KENAI PENINSULA GUIDED FISHING

Kenai peninsula guided fishing for Trophy Rainbow trout fishing combined with sockeye salmon fishing makes for a fun day.  Kenai river king salmon fishing is also available at this time of year. The Sockeye Salmon fishing should pick up again near the end of the  first week of July and be good through the second week of Aug.  That has been the norm for the last few years.  These are hard fighting fish with a built in instinct to trash gear you can plan on some excitement.  If you plan to chase these fish on your own make sure that you put a little extra in your gear so the odds of getting them to shore gets a little better. The  Rainbow trout bite has been very good while fly fishing leeches and minnow imitations.  I like to fish a down and across drift right now with a sink tip line.  The water has been very clear but is now coming up with just a little color. In the bigger water the larger leech patterns show up better and produce the most strikes.  If you have any questions feel free to contact me at www.driftingonthefly.com for your next guided kenai river trip. Little Susitna Trip

The little susitna trip was a success!! Everyone hooked into King Salmon on fly rods, the food was great and plenty of it, the weather brought clear (sunscreen was definitely needed) and hot (70’s) days and everyone learned how easy it is to fish yourself to sleep! Back country trips are always a lot of fun though none of them go exactly like it is planned out on paper.  Then again that’s part of the fun as well!  We are planning a trip for 2009 and if you would like information on when and where as soon as it is available, please email me so I can put you on the list. We will continue to limit these trips to four people for 3 nights and 4 days on the river.  This is also an excellent trip for when the silver salmon are running as well, the logistics are the same and the price is as well.  Carlos, Glenn and Larry – Thank you, it was great! And congratulations to larry for landing the biggest king salmon of the fishing trip.  It was a great battle and we enjoyed putting that one in the net. Go ahead and give us a call to line up your next back country fishing trip in Alaska.

KENAI PENINSULA CLAM DIGGING

Kenai peninsula clam digging can be spectacular.  If you enjoy clams and are heading north to go fishing check the tide tables and plan your trip on the low of low tides.  Any dates with a negative tide should produce good clam digging.  Find a divet in the sand and start digging.  I like to dig a couple times with a shovel to get close and then dig by hand.  I tend to break less clams this way but many techniques work well and along with a good meal it is a ton of fun.  Last week we had some great tides and my wife and I filled the bag with them.  The law requires you to have a fishing license to dig and you have to keep any razor clam that you pull up.  Those that get the hang of pulling up these fast, tasty guys up can keep 60 of them a day.  The average clam is about 5 inches and you can score clams up to about 8 inches. If you have any questions about seeking clams out feel free to contact me at www.driftingonthefly.com Thanks and good fishing, Scott Sager

FLY FISHING FOR KING SALMON

Fly fishing for king salmon can take some patients but play your tides and look for pushes of fish to come by. The King Salmon are starting to show up in real numbers now.  I took this fish on a blue and chart. Marabou fly, Size 3/0.  A dead drift worked for this guy but sometimes you can get them on a few short strips at the end of the drift. This is good fishing and if you to would like to try your luck with a King Salmon feel free to contact me at www.driftingonthefly.com for your next guide trip.

FLY FISHING FOR KING SALMON

RICH KETTERMAN KING SALMON Fly fishing for king salmon on the Kenai Peninsula! How about a few busted knuckles? I narrowly escaped with mine intact yesterday while . We were fishing about 100 yards from the saltwater and when I hooked him, he decided he didn’t like the fresh water anymore. I have to say that I have never had any fish, run that hard in the fresh water!  This king salmon took an olive articulated egg sucking leach at the end of the swing. The fishing has been great this time of the year. The King Salmon are starting to increase in numbers though it has taken a little while for them to get going. It has been a cool Spring in South central Alaska and this affects everything, even the salmon run. This has however been my most productive Spring season with a fly rod for King Salmon though and I can only hope it keeps going that way. Are you interested in learning how to fly fish for a few tackle busting King Salmon? Give me a call 907-382-6808 and we can arrange for that to happen in short order on your next kenai peninsula guide trip with Drifting on the Fly! Tight Lines, Scott Sager Drifting On The Fly, LLC

KENAI RIVER KING SALMON

Kenai river King Salmon are coming in better numbers every day.  The rivers both kenai and kasilof are fishing well right now. Drift fishing has still been hit or miss depending on the day. A few Sockeye Salmon are showing up in the Kenai River this week. Be sure to familiarize yourself if you plan to fish the Kenai river since a lot of regulation changes are now in effect for the 2008 season. Pay special attention to the 2-Stroke Motor restrictions. June 11 will open the Kenai River Rainbow Trout Season, until then this season is closed river wide. Check out this link for details on the regulation changes. Give me a call 907-382-6808 if you want to fish the Kenai or Kasilof, I still have a few days open in June as of tonight if you are interested in using our kenai peninsula guide service.

KASILOF RIVER KING SALMON FISHING

Kasilof river King Salmon fishing is getting good now.  On a guide trip  last Tues. and took a beautiful fresh 20lbs. King salmon.  We had a few other hits and caught a few Dolly Varden, Steel head, and flounder in the tidal water.  Things are looking up and the fishing should only get better on the kenai peninsula. If you’d like to book a trip with my Alaska guide service check out our website at www.driftingonthefly.com. Thanks and good fishing, Scott Sager

Silver Salmon Fly Fishing

copy-of-600.jpg

When I think of Salmon on the fly rod I think Silver Salmon fly fishing.  The fishing typically gets good by mid to late July on some of our fly out fishing and mid Aug. to the end of Oct. on the Kenai peninsula and the kenai river.  In the right conditions silver salmon will take the fly very aggressively.  I’ve even had many opportunities to take these fish on top water.  Bunny flies, articulated flies, marabou flies, leaches, spoon flies, etc. are just a few patterns that will work well for these fish.  I find a slow strip in slow water or swinging your flies in faster water draw the most strikes.  I prefer a strip set or scissor strike to set the hook.  This way if you miss the fish you don’t pull the streamer out of the strike zone and often the fish will come back to give you a second chance.  If you are fishing from a boat make sure you fish the fly all the way back to the boat.  I see fish chasing all the way to the boat for a last chance strike. If you are interested in matching your skills with these fish make sure you contact me at www.driftingonthefly.com and we’ll get you lined up on a alaska fishing guide tip.
