Kenai River Trip

driftingonthefly.com

When the fishing is good on a kenai river trip there is little time for sitting around.  Here Kim and Jeff are excited about a great net job on a sockeye salmon.

A Good kenai River Trip for Sockeye Salmon should be scheduled for the middle of June and from the middle of July until the second week in August.  Fishing for Sockeye Salmon begins in June on the Kenai river and will last until mid august some years.  There are two runs of sockeye salmon on the Kenai river.  The first run which is known as the russian river run of sockeye salmon which opens on June 11th and usually peaks around the 20th of June.  The second run of sockeye salmon will start filtering in with the end of the first run and should peak around the middle of July.  The second run of fish in many recent years has brought hundreds of thousands of fish into the system.  Usually by the second week in August the fishing has passed its peak for sockeye salmon and we are moving on to rainbow trout and silver salmon fishing.

If you are in for a fun and exciting Kenai river trip lets chase some sockeye salmon.  We will get to one of my favorite gravel bars in either a drift boat or power boat and set up for a great day of fishing.  The limit of sockeye salmon per person per day is 3 unless fish and game releases an emergency order to allow more fish to be harvested.  When this happens it usually goes up to 6 per person.

20120908-090016.jpg Dolly varden fishing on the kenai river can be excellent.  Along with the rainbow trout fishing you will find that these hard fighting fish can really be a good variety to your day. The guys taking time for family photos on the Kenai river and soaking in the experience. The high bank I am on is a great place to eat lunch and view the river and mountain range behind skilak lake. 20120908-090327.jpg The rainbow trout and Dolly Varden fishing was really good in the morning and tapered off a little by the afternoon. We still managed to find pockets of fish that were willing to feed. After I dropped my guest off I picked up a buddy and my dog at the dock and hung out on the river for another couple hours. It makes for a long day but winter is coming fast and this is the time of year I love the most. 20120908-090908.jpg If you are interested in a day on the water this year I still have days available for the in September and october this year. I was able to maneuver the boat close enough for my guest to get some great photos. Wildlife along the Kenai river is abundant and you never know what you might see on a day trip with us. 20120906-192414.jpg 20120906-192426.jpg This young Alaska brown bear was really trying hard to catch a fish and finally did.  I think he will winter just fine. 20120906-192439.jpg Kenai river Rainbow trout fishing was good today again and I hope it continues through the whole fall. Our fish have enough of a food source to hold them over for a long time this year with the pink salmon in the river. Pink salmon show up on the kenai river on even numbered years. 20120906-192758.jpg 20120906-192904.jpg The guys caught lots of fish today and managed to hang a very large fish but didn’t land it.  The opportunity to catch a world class rainbow trout is very high on the kenai river with fish caught daily 24-28 inches and an occasional 30 inch plus fish. Rainbow Trout Season

Today is the Rainbow Trout season opener on the Kenai River, June 11th. Get out your smolt and flesh fly patterns and enjoy some potentially great rainbow trout fishing. This is a great time of year to pursue trout, they are hungry and willing to take traditional flies, which is always a lot of fun. The mouth of the Kenai River from Skilak lake five miles down stream is closed to all motorized vessels until June 15th! This is set into place because of the trumpeter swans that are nesting in the area. WHEN TO COME DOLLY VARDEN FISHING

WHEN TO COME DOLLY VARDEN FISHING ON THE KENAI RIVER. Alaska Dolly Varden on a fly rod! What an experience – Guided Alaska Dolly Varden Fly Fishing on the Kenai River or one of the many surrounding streams. Drift Boat or wade fishing trips can both be quite productive for Dolly Varden. wayne leslie June starts the Dolly Varden season on many of the streams we regularly guide including the Kenai River. We typically start the season fishing standard streamer patterns such as muddlers, sculpins, leech patterns, and flesh flies. As the Salmon increase in numbers the Dolly’s tend to move into the Salmon spawning grounds. Here they fatten up on salmon flesh and eggs. Targeting Dolly’s involves locating these spawning areas and matching what the Dolly’s are feeding on; fresh eggs, old eggs, flesh… any of which will work from day to day; we call it Match-the-Hatch – Alaska Style. Dolly Fishing continues through the month of October and typically cold weather chases us off the river before they stop feeding. 2011 Guided River Trip Rate $250 per person *LARGE GROUPS WELCOME *LODGING PACKAGES AVAILABLE *EXCLUSIVE BOAT PACKAGES -2 PERSON EXCLUSIVE STARTING AT $750.00 A DAY -3 PERSON EXCLUSIVE STARTING AT $950.00 A DAY contact details, business phone: 907-382-6808 or send an inquiry here!

Dolly Varden

wayne leslie Dolly varden guide trips on the Kenai river are available throughout the guide season on the Kenai peninsula and Alaska.  Some of the longer hikes into the Kenai River can produce the best fish.  Also I find that the more effort it takes me to get to the river the less competition I find for my favorite fishing spots.  This particular trail leads us into the middle Kenai River and is three miles from the parking lot.  We are happy to share information with you so give us a call and we will do our best to point you in the right direction.  If a do it yourself fishing trip isn’t something that you are interested in we are happy to take you on a guided trip for any of the species found on the Kenai Peninsula.   The Kenai River offers a variety of species to fish for and dolly varen is one of them.  Year round we can find Dolly Varden in the Kenai River just like this one.  This day was beautiful and a balmy 29 degrees.  Dead drifting the right color egg pattern fooled this fish.    Dolly Varden in mid February on the middle Kenai River. RAINBOW TROUT FISHING THE KENAI RIVER

Rainbow trout fishing the Kenai river is always something I look forward too, even on day 100 I still find the motivation to get gear together and make my way to the river.  It is always helpful to see the river when the water is very low.  At Cooper Landing the Flow was around 600 CFS and below Skilak lake it was flowing around 840 CFS.  This gives me a lot of information for the following guide season on where rainbow trout might be holding. We picked up a few rainbow trout around Princess rapids on the upper Kenai River.  The temperature was in the low 20’s all morning and eventually came up to were we could fish without freezing up to bad.   Thanks to the Jet-boil we were able to take a break and have some hot coffee. KENAI RIVER RAINBOW TROUT Not removing the fish from the water on very cold days is a great idea, plus it’s much better for your hands!   I’m sure that leeches and flesh flies would have picked a few fish up but there were a lot of silver salmon spawning.  We knew that we would be fighting almost dead silvers all day were we were fishing if we used streamers.   Egg patterns seemed to be the ticket and we didn’t pick up many silvers at all.  Both dead egg patterns and fresh egg patterns picked up a few rainbow trout and dolly varden. WILLIE PREDATOR POWER BOAT

Drifting on the Fly, LLC proudly added a Willie Predator power boat to the business. The boat is 20 feet long and is 72 inches wide and is powered by a 50 horse power Mercury motor and has a 9.9  horse power Mercury motor for secondary power. Though running a drift boat on the Kenai River for salmon, Dolly Varden and rainbow trout has its place, the power boat has its benefits as well.

The use of a powerboat for rainbow trout fishing on the middle Kenai River is a very effective way to have a chance at big Kenai River rainbow trout. This boat also allows us to easily fish the lower Kenai River for king salmon.  With a 50-horse power engine on the back of the boat running multiple drifts through a hole can be done in no time.

The option to fish for rainbow trout, silver salmon, or sockeye salmon on the middle river in a power boat is now available.  I have owned and run power boats for years and it is nice to finally add one to our guided fishing operation.

We are looking forward to another great fishing season. Booking a guide trip on the kenai river with Drifting on the Fly easy!

KENAI RIVER TROUT FISHING

Drifting On The Fly, LLC
Kenai river trout fishing in the winter can be good one day and just OK the next.  Inconsistent temperatures has a lot to do with this.  The peak season of kenai river trout fishing is June, August, September and October. The first weekend of Dec. was beautiful on the Kenai river.  We didn’t catch a ton of rainbow trout but enough to keep us motivated.  Skilak lake is now starting to freeze over and wade fishing opportunities are about all that is available now.  The weather was excellent today with temperatures over 30 degrees!  I wasn’t out on the Kenai river but I know a few people that took full advantage and look forward to the report.  Winter fishing is a great time of year to get out on the Kenai river, so pick a window of good weather and get outside!  Good luck and we’ll see you out there. Keep us in mind for your summer trip to the kenai peninsula as well.  If you would like to inquire about a Kenai river trout fishing trip give us a call.
