The KENAI RIVER is a complex and dynamic system, providing excellent habitat for fisheries.  This excellent habitat helps produce lots of salmon, trout, and more.  All five species of Pacific salmon return to the Kenai River every year, including Chinook (king salmon), coho (silver salmon), chum, pink, and sockeye salmon.  Though the pink salmon only return in big numbers on even number years and there isn’t very many chum salmon that enter the Kenai River.  Other fish species in the Kenai river drainage include rainbow trout, Dolly Varden, and arctic graylingAll of these species can be targeted in a guided fishing trip on the Kenai River or Kenai peninsula. Imagine floating down glacial blue waters, surrounded by snow capped mountains, forested lands, and possible wildlife around every bend of the river, all while waiting for the tremendous ‘take down’ on your rod by any one of the five salmon or other fish species. From peaceful and serene, to action packed and adrenaline rushing……this is what you will experience when your line goes down and everyone yells, “FISH ON!”.  Once the fish is brought to the boat, your guide will help you cherish the memory by taking pictures of your epic catch with a backdrop of glacial waters and mountains. Termination Dust above Kenai Lake Every trip down the Kenai River, whether it’s in a drift boat or powerboat, is one of comfort and space.  To help with those chilly mornings, your guide will have hot coffee to keep you warm.  If you’re looking for a relaxing and fun experience on the Kenai River to fish for a chance for a catch of a lifetime.  Give us a call to discuss your trip plans at 907-382-6808 and BOOK TODAY!

Guided Kasilof River King Salmon Fishing

RICH KETTERMAN KING SALMON Headed to the Kenai Peninsula in search of a Guided Kasilof River King Salmon Fishing? Consider the Kasilof River a great option!  This fishery is the located 12 mile from Soldotna Alaska and is the sister river to the Kenai River.  It is also a drift boat only King Salmon fishery which means there are no motors allowed and pressure is way less than on the Kenai River, though popularity is growing every year. kasilof river drift boat The Kasilof river has two distinctive runs of King Salmon. The First run of fish start to show up around the middle of May and usually peaks by the middle of June.  These early run Kings will typically run between 20 and 30 pounds with an occasional fish weighing over 30 pounds.  During the early season the river is much lower than it is in late June and July.  It is still cold in the high country and the runoff isn’t as heavy yet.  This is the time to come if you are looking to hook a King Salmon on the fly.  As the water rises there is more glacier silt that clouds the river and less bank fishing opportunity to fly fish. The second run of Kasilof River King Salmon start to show up near the end of June mixing in with the remainder of the first run fish and will keep coming in through the end of King salmon season.  July 31st is the last day that we are allowed to target these fish.  These fish tend to be quite a bit bigger than the first run of fish, averaging 30-40 pounds and with many fish caught every year reaching 50 pounds or larger. The Kasilof river offers some great fishing opportunities, chances to see wildlife and is in a very peaceful setting.  Sit back, relax and wait for one of these large, hard fighting fish to latch onto your line.  If you are interested in a guided King Salmon fishing trip on the Kenai Peninsula I think that the Kasilof river is a great place to fish. kasilof king salom fishing Give us a call at (907) 382-6808 or contact us through the site by clicking on the book now link! Happy new year

Kim and I are now home from the hospital with our daughter Katherine Mary Sager (Kate). The three of us couldn’t be happier. Mom and daughter are healthy and life is good. I hope that everyone had a great New Years this year! It’s been unseasonably warm here in south central Alaska in the last few weeks. I would usually take full advantage of the weather and chase rainbow trout as much as a could. This time of year can offer some great fishing. We are taking bookings for the 2013 fishing season here in Alaska. If you are dreaming of catching a hard fighting salmon or a rainbow trout this year on the Kenai peninsula please give us a call anytime and we will be happy to answer any questions you might have. 20121030-153841.jpg The Alaska fishing season is over for us here at Drifting on the Fly now.  The cool 5 am mornings are now replaced with well below freezing temps, wind and snow now for months ahead. My 2012 season is over here in Alaska and I look forward to next years Alaska fishing season already. I While getting my gear in order for the long winter ahead I was able to slip out and enjoy the kenai river for a couple afternoons. The fishing was incredible and I hated to leave it. Here are a couple pictures from my last day on the Kenai river fly fishing for rainbow trout and steelhead my last few days of the 2012 season. 20121102-151837.jpg I caught this steelhead on the Anchor river using a six weight z axis switch rod 20121102-151854.jpg 20121102-151910.jpg 20121102-151919.jpg Brian of Wilderness Way looks a little chilli as we motor back up stream for another drift.  We had an epic day on the river today and I look forward to getting back out there next spring.  Who knows maybe there will be a 20 Pound fish on the end of my line next time? Kenai river Alaska fly fishing

The Kenai river was running much clearer today than the last couple days. Kenai river Alaska fly fishing for rainbow trout and Dolly Varden fishing was very good all day long. I found a few concentrations of bigger fish and was able to land a few of them! 20120830-204826.jpg Jack caught so many fish today that after 8 hours he was laying down on the deck trying to run a drift. It didn’t work so well but he just couldn’t bring himself to quit! 20120830-205039.jpg Everyone caught good fish and they are already in for another week next year. 20120830-210130.jpg This Large dark rainbow trout was caught close to the shore.  I think he was taking a break from the current and hanging in some easier water. 20120830-210153.jpg 20120830-210207.jpg Dolly varden are often caught while fishing for rainbow trout on the kenai river 20120830-210218.jpg Rainbow trout fishing is all catch and release with barbless hooks. Sitka clothing and gear

Taking a couple day break to go do some hiking and camping in the Kenai mountains. One thing that I have to depend on in the back country of Alaska is my clothing. I put my life on the line with Sitka clothing and gear. I’ll be gone on a solo trip for 5 days with only my pack and of course my fly rod!! I’ll post some picture from along the way. There will not be a trail to tell you where I’m going. I Will have cell service until Thursday morning at 7 am. Then I should Gain it back on Monday after 5 pm. Have fun and always be safe. Check us out at www.driftingonthefly.com if you are interested in a back country trip in Alaska! (907)-382-6808 20120807-151450.jpg utah trout I wore sitka’s storm front gore tex on this trip into the high country of Utah for 7 days and stayed comfortable.  Good clothing can be the difference in a successful memorable trip and a miserable trip that you’d like to forget.  If you’re ready to invest in some great clothing be sure to check out sitka.  I don’t have anything bad to say about the product.

Kenai river sockeye salmon and rainbow trout fishing

Kenai river sockeye salmon and rainbow trout fishing trips with Drifting on the Fly’s guide service. Kenai river sockeye salmon and rainbow trout fishing combination trips can be a long day on the water but provide a great experience of the river. Our full day trips are advertised at 8 hours but many days go on a little longer. I met up with one of my Alaska resident fishing groups early to get our waders on and gear ready this morning. The kids eager to get out on the river but the early mornings make them move a little slower. 20120724-203028.jpg Starting out on the lower Kenai river with some sockeye salmon fishing.  The kids had a great time and caught a few salmon but really wanted to go after a big Kenai river rainbow trout. Early in the sockeye salmon run I target fish directly behind cleaning stations and were carcasses tend to pile up. This proved to be where most of the rainbow trout were today! Nothing big but that doesn’t matter when you are catching fish. Good job guys and I’m looking forward to next weekend. 20120724-203906.jpg 20120724-203924.jpg 20120724-203936.jpg Combination trips are great for an all around experience we usually break the trip into two half days, fishing for salmon in the morning and trout in the afternoon. Thanks for keeping up with us and remember to check us out at www.driftingonthefly.com and on Facebook

Kenai river salmon fishing

20120722-203734.jpg Kenai river salmon fishing starts early in the day and will last eight hours on a full day trip.  We will coordinate on the meeting place and start time prior to the fishing trip. Running up the Kenai river in the early morning can be chilly, even In July! Remember to bring a few extra layers to remain comfortable. Also sunglasses and a favorite hat is highly recommended. 20120722-203958.jpg Once we arrived on the gravel bar we quickly warmed up with some great kenai river salmon fishing! A limit of reds are harder to find early in the season but with persistance and good techniques you should be able to put some fish on the bank. After a day of good fishing for sockeye salmon these anglers will be headed home with some salmon and memories of fishing the Kenai river. There are still a few seats available for rainbow trout, silver salmon and sockeye salmon (reds) left for the 2012 season give us a call at 1(907)382-6808 if you are planning getting out and doing a little kenai river salmon fishing on your vacation to the Kenai peninsula. Kasilof king salmon fishing

Spending the day with a great group on the kasilof river.  After Kasilof king salmon fishing today I’ll be enjoying a fresh king salmon on the BBQ to bring in the summer solstice right! Have fun and be safe. 20120620-123426.jpg The kasilof river is a drift boat only fishery for king salmon so the option to go back to the boat launch doesn’t exist until the end of the fishing day.  Here are a few things that you will need to make sure you have for a Kasilof king salmon fishing trip: -rain gear, pants and jacket, we have rain gear available if you let us know at the boat launch – king salmon stamp – valid alaska fishing license -packed lunch, we will have coffee, water and snacks on the boat -extra clothing in case you get wet or cold remember we are rowing the river so keep your cooler (if you bring one) reasonable.  I’ve seen 200 pound coolers before and it is like rowing with another person in the boat.
