ALASKA KENAI RIVER FLYFISHING

Alaska Kenai river flyfishing in the Spring is a great time of year to get your streamer fix. Fishing on the Kenai river is way different than it is during the summer months. Most of the silver salmon are done spawning by now but there are a few fish still in the river. I only noticed about a half dozen fish last weekend in the area I was fishing. I chose to swing leeches and minnow patterns on this outing. An olive leech caught the only fish of the day.

I was by myself when this nice Kenai river rainbow trout slammed my leech pattern. When the water is this low and clear I spend more time looking for rainbows than I do casting. These fish are spooky and if you can spot a fish and cast to it you are more likely to catch it than just slinging line blindly in the water. Look for flashes, dark shapes, spooked bait fish, spawning salmon, etc. Once you train your eye, spotting fish becomes easier than you would think. KENAI RIVER FLY FISHING

Every spring while I’m out KENAI RIVER FLY FISHING I look for Terns gathering on the river. Finding terns hoovering over the river more than likely means Parr Salmon have made the transformation to smolt and are heading out to sea. In the spring Parr salmon undergo a chemical change that lets them adapt from freshwater to the saltwater where they will spend the next few years of their life. These large moving balls of smolt trigger feeding frenzies for fish and birds too. Look for smolt in April, May, and early June and get ready for some exciting Rainbow trout fishing experiences. For Salmon Parr I like to use a small white deceiver in a size 6 or 8 streamer hook and for the smolt I like to use a blue and white deceiver in tied on a 4 or 6 streamer hook.

This pattern works well for Parr imitations. Tied with: 4 small white saddle hackles tied in first. White buck tail tied in on the top side of the shank 2 strands of copper flash on each side of the body 4 pieces of peacock tied in on top of that A black sharpie will give you the parr markings that you want on the body I chose to give this fly an epoxy head with big silver eyes. KENAI RIVER DRY FLY FISHING

THERE CAN BE SOME VERY GOOD KENAI RIVER DRY FLY FISHING. June is a great month to be in the middle of some great caddis hatches in Alaska. Smaller rivers and lakes on the Kenai peninsula have been the most productive when I am look for Rainbow trout on dry flies. Also look at the side channels of the Kenai river, there are some great place to find some rainbow trout eager to take a dry fly. Once the salmon show up in good numbers you can fish a dry fly all day long and never have a trout look up. When you do find fish looking up make sure you have a few caddis patterns to fall back on.

I’m a huge fan of peacock hurl, I mix it into most of my favorite patterns.

Brown or olive caddis patterns in a size 12 is a go to for us in June. KENAI RIVER RAINBOW TROUT

When the river starts to rise with melt off and the Kenai river Rainbow trout season opens (june 11th) don’t hesitate to add a sink tip line into your arsenal. I prefer to fly fish a 250 grain sink tip line and a six weight rod for getting down to those big fish. Leeches, clousers, woolly boogers, and muddler minnows should get you into fish. Swing them down and across, keeping them as deep as you can. Also, don’t overlook the slower water in early morning and late afternoon. Fish slow and thorough! If you find that the fish are just not responding switch up to the old flesh fly and keep it in the thick cover. Flesh gets caught up in overhangs, and washed back into the river with rising water throughout the spring. FALL TROUT FISHING ON THE KENAI RIVER

Fall trout fishing on the Kenai River can be epic. My good friend Nigel Fox caught this Rainbow Trout on his favorite flesh fly. If the temperatures are right at this time of year we will allow you to remove the fish briefly from the water for a picture Late Oct. when the conditions are right you might switch it up and try one of your favorite flesh flies. Many flies work at this time of year. Leech’s, flesh flies, egg patterns, a variety of nymphs and many more, so techniques change as we change patterns. The mornings are cold and winter is knocking on our door now. I would like to be able to chase kenai river rainbow trout for a few more weeks though. Guiding on the kenai river is very exciting for me because you never know when the opportunity for a fish of a lifetime is willing to bite. We offer both fly fishing and spin fishing guided trips. Kenai River Rainbow Trout Fishing In October

Kenai River Rainbow Trout Fishing in October is a great time to get out and experience the river. The crowds are starting to dwindle and the water levels usually are doing the same. The weather can get cold and snow will be in the forecast more than likely but the fish will be there. Being new to fly fishing, Sam handled this fish like a pro. Great Job! When the tempuratures drop we will not remove the fish from the water so there isn’t as high of a mortality rate. Please respect this and we will do our best to get a quality picture of you catch. If we plan on harvesting a silver salmon this rule doesn’t apply! Grayling are not a common fish in the Kenai river but we do catch one every once in a while. Today was the exception, we caught one 8″ arctic grayling today. Grayling will move into the kenai river later in the season to find food before the long winter sets in. October fishing on the kenai river can be very productive. Silver salmon are spawning now and the Rainbow trout move right behind them to feed. Alaska Top Water Rainbow Trout Fishing

Under the right conditions and timing you can find some great Alaska top water rainbow trout fishing. From Dry flies in small streams and lakes to big mouse patterns on the Kenai and other rivers in the state. June proves to be a good month on the Kenai Peninsula for this and I have some great streams in other parts of the state that can provide top water rainbow trout fishing. It is my goal to explore at least one new river every year. This year we chose Lake Creek to see if it was worth adding to the arsenal. At the begining of the trip we were able to get plenty of rainbows taking mouse patterns which made the trip worth while right then and there. We had high muddy water for the whole trip and still the river produced a good number of rainbow trout, grayling, and silver salmon . On our 60 mile adventure through white water, rocks and canyons. We found ourselves thinking that we need to show this to you. If you are interested in a 6 day 5 night back country float I think we found a great adventure for you! FLY FISHING RAINBOW TROUT ON THE KENAI RIVER

Fly Fishing rainbow trout on the Kenai river can be a great guided trip. We offer many trips on the Kenai but specialize in finding bit trout on the fly. Fish like these aren’t landed everyday but are hooked often. Every once in a while a fish cooperates and an angler does everything right and we are able to put a big fish in the net.

King Salmon are starting to really starting to drop their eggs now and trout fishing the kenai river is heating up. The Rainbow trout are moving around and finding dinner at the the hottest spawning ground these days. The river should be full of eggs within the next week..!!! Think of any other trout fishing you know and match the hatch except with beads and flesh flies instead of may flies and stone flies. Just like any fishing pay attention to what’s happening in the stream and you’ll have a more productive day on the water.

Middle Kenai River Fishing

Middle kenai river fishing is very popular. We chase Rainbow trout, dolly varden, silver salmon and sockeye salmon on this section of river.

Rainbow Trout fishing the kenai river is good day here and a so so day there but we look for it to get real good any day. Rainbow trout that are over 25 inches are not uncommon here and 30 inch fish are landed many times throughout the season. Middle kenai river trout fishing is good in June, August, September and October. Book a trip on the middle kenai river and then a steelhead fishing trip or two and let us show you a great fishing vacation. KENAI PENINSULA GUIDED FISHING

Kenai peninsula guided fishing for Trophy Rainbow trout fishing combined with sockeye salmon fishing makes for a fun day. Kenai river king salmon fishing is also available at this time of year. The Sockeye Salmon fishing should pick up again near the end of the first week of July and be good through the second week of Aug. That has been the norm for the last few years. These are hard fighting fish with a built in instinct to trash gear you can plan on some excitement. If you plan to chase these fish on your own make sure that you put a little extra in your gear so the odds of getting them to shore gets a little better. The Rainbow trout bite has been very good while fly fishing leeches and minnow imitations. I like to fish a down and across drift right now with a sink tip line. The water has been very clear but is now coming up with just a little color. In the bigger water the larger leech patterns show up better and produce the most strikes.
