Fly Out Fishing Trip

A fly out fishing trip in Alaska is a bit more expensive due to the cost of the flight but if you are interested in fishing around more bears than people this is sometimes the only option.  The group and I showed up just a little early this morning at the flight service for our fly out fishing trip. I like to have time to go through my gear one more time before take off And not be in a rush. Today’s weather outlook is great. It should be as good of a day as you can get for flying in the Alaska mountain. We are headed out to chase silver salmon on the fly today. The tide and timing should be excellent for being successful but no matter what the trip will be beautiful. 20120829-072323.jpg   20120829-072336.jpg 20120829-072352.jpg 20120829-072403.jpg Tim from Natron air in Soldotna Alaska has flown me out with guest many times now. He has a well maintained, clean and reliable plane.  It’s quit an experience landing on a beach in the middle of no where.  Depending on where we fly will determine if we use a wheeled plane or a plane on floats. I will report in on the trip when we get back after we get back. Tight lines Scott Sager Www.driftingonthefly.com

Kenai river silver salmon and rainbow trout fishing

20120828-231015.jpg This mornings kenai river silver salmon and rainbow trout fishing trip was gorgeous!! The 20 minute run up river was as scenic as Alaska is! You can expect anything from fog to rain to snow to any condition in Alaska but this morning was one to praise. It was 39 degrees at the boat launch and crystal clear! It’s trout season! 20120828-231434.jpg 20120828-231451.jpg 20120828-231520.jpg Dustin and “jeff”! decided to purchase an exclusive boat for a couple days and wanted to fish Kenai river rainbow trout and silver salmon (cohoe. We limited fast this morning and had smokes and lunch on my favorite gravel bar on the Kenai river. Every day can’t be limits of salmon but it is Alaska. 20120828-232125.jpg 20120828-232206.jpg On the way back to the boat launch this pair of eagles was worth turning the boat and taking a few pics for. 20120828-232340.jpg 20120828-232349.jpg This afternoons Kenai river rainbow trout trip was great! The Leslie group had been fishing with me for years. We headed up the Kenai river and pulled off a great half day evening trip on the Kenai river. We had 4 hours of great rainbow trout and dolly Varden fishing! They group also witnessed a sow brown bear and two cubs feeding on a gravel bar. These are the same two bears that have been out for the last two evenings. 20120828-232722.jpg 20120828-232736.jpg A good Alaska fall day today! Fall is here but fishing season had just begun. Alaska rainbow trout fishing

20120827-224002.jpg Float planes often cruise the Kenai River and can land in many places.  It is quit an experience to have a float plane buzz you while you are in Alaska rainbow trout fishing. The rainbow trout have moved behind the king salmon and there are fish feeding through out the whole system right now. 20120827-224325.jpg Alaska rainbow trout fishing can be very frustrating if you do not match the hatch.  The hatch being flesh and eggs from the salmon.  When the Rainbows key in on this rich food source you will be hard pressed catching them on any other imitations. The first to spawn are the King salmon.  King salmon eggs are around 9-12 mm in size and vary in color depending on light and time that they have been in the water.   20120827-224509.jpg Often in the fall you can find bears feeding along the gravel bars.  This bear was spotted below rainbow alley on the middle kenai river.  He chased sea gulls and found an easy meal right in front of us while we fished.  I love it when guest that have never seen an Alaska brown bear have the opportunity to hang out with them on the river. Alaska state fair

My guest yesterday morning showed up at the boat launch and we headed out silver salmon fishing for a half day trip. We had a few follows, a few spit the hook and caught some pink salmon but didn’t land any of the fish that we were pursuing. After a few minutes I had learned that this husband wife team was on tour with Alter bridge that had just performed at the Alaska state fair. Unfortunately they had to cancel their trip for today Because of another concert in philly. I enjoyed hearing their stories and look forward to having them back on the boat in the future. I’d like to go to the fair one year. After 10 years in Alaska I still haven’t been yet. Life in the fast lane I guess! Kasilof river silver salmon fishing

kasilof river silver salmon fishing today was good. There are still a lot of pink salmon coming into the river. Pinks or also known as humpies are a great fighting fish and provide lots of action for anglers. They are not as desirable for table fare as silvers because they do not freeze as well to eat later.  Most of our silver salmon were caught bouncing cured eggs of the bottom of the river.  The kasilof river isn’t as clear as some river due to the glacier silt and this is why bait with scent works well for catching fish here 20120824-212654.jpg We were just shy of a limit today but that didn’t matter to these folks. We had a great day on the kasilof river and even barbecued some fresh silver salmon on the boat today! 20120824-212919.jpg Give us a call for your next Kasilof river silver salmon fishing trip and we will custom build a package for you that suites your expectations on the Kenai peninsula and beyond! Relaxing on the Kenai river

Relaxing on the Kenai river with a nice cigar and a beer at mid day. Wayne and crew are Taking a few minutes from fishing to smell the roses and reflect on the morning rainbow trout fishing. 20120823-172021.jpg The guys enjoying a nice cigar on the Kenai river after a big lunch. 20120823-171927.jpg Alcohol is permitted on our boats but not in excess.  We do not provide any alcoholic beverages. 20120823-171917.jpg Sometimes it’s not all about the fish although these guys caught a lot of Kenai river rainbow trout and dolly Varden.  The Kenai rive is an excellent place to get away from it all and get back to spending the day doing something for you, and possibly hooking the ONE! Kasilof river silvers and kenai river trout fishing

20120823-133723.jpg   Kasilof river silvers and kenai river trout fishing combo Got a quick limit of silver salmon yesterday morning on the kasilof river bouncing eggs in the tidal water. The group was interested in some fly fishing so we put the drift boat up and took the power boat out on the Kenai river rainbow trout fishing. The little extra effort really paid off with some big fish!!  This isn’t something we do every day but if there is time we are happy to go the extra mile for you. 20120823-134336.jpg Bright sunny days often put the rainbow’s off the bite.  Today was an exception to that!  When salmon start dropping eggs into the system all bets are off and it should be fish On.   20120823-134406.jpg Trout salmon combo days can be a lot of fun and a lot of work as well.  If we change up gears and switch systems extra half day rates will apply for the afternoon trip. If you would like to get in on a day like this give us a call at 907-382-6808. Tight lines, Scott Sager Drifting On The Fly

Kasilof silver salmon fishing

20120821-110650.jpg We were on the kasilof river silver salmon fishing this morning. Back trolling plugs and cured eggs trying to get in front a good push of fish.   A change in the weather from yesterday for sure. Bright sunny skies have us wearing sun scream in layers instead of rain jackets!! It’s a ladies trip today and they are a riot! We’ve caught a few silver salmon and a lot of pink salmon. A few more hours are left in the day to bring in a limit for the girls. I hope it happens for them.   20120821-111809.jpg This chrome bright silver salmon put on a real show for us.  It cart wheeled 4 times before coming into the net.  Silver salmon are the number one choice for many anglers.  The ladies have been coming to alaska for many years and prefer the fishing for the silver over any other species of salmon that they have fished for.  I have to say whatever I am fishing for at the moment tends to be my favorite fish to pursue?  I enjoy meeting new people and fishing, it’s the perfect job. If you would like to give the Kasilof river a shot for silver salmon give us a call or contact us through the site and we will hook you up!
