Shenandoah Valley fly fishing

I had a chance to get home and fly fish in the Shenandoah national park and Shenandoah valley  for a couple of days.  Shenandoah valley fly fishing involves a lot of hiking, wade fishing and or drift boat fishing.  The weather was OK and the fishing was great.  I only had a couple of opportunities to get out with the boys from www.murraysflyshop.com but when I did it was on. va-2009-009There is nothing big about the trout in Shenandoah nation park but native fish that are thousands of years old and readily taking dry flies makes this fishing as fun as any I have ever done.  The beautiful mountain streams can put the most seasoned fishers into a trance. We fished the Rapidan river in Madison county VA on this trip but there are over 50 fish able streams in the park! va-2009-017 Guide John Colman with a nice small mouth on the North Fork of the Shenandoah river.  Though the water temperature was colder than we would have liked the fish still cooperated.  We caught Small mouth bass, Large mouth bass, sunfish and fall fish. If you are interested in taking a fun, fish filled trip in the Shenandoah valley I highly recommend that you check out www.murraysflyshop.com. We are back in AK and start our season here may 16th!  King Salmon fishing should be good and if you are looking for an Alaska vacation for 2009 make sure you check us out at www.driftingonthefly.com Tight lines, Scott sager

ALASKA MOUSE PATTERNS

Alaska mouse patterns can be fished in place through out the summer. Rainbow  Trout on mouse patterns?  This is awesome!  Trout need as many calories as they can consume in the short summers of Alaska.  I’ve seen 10 inch fish take a size 4 mouse pattern, ferociously.  Try dead drifting, swinging, slow or fast strips and you will be sure to have a rainbow on a mouse pattern before long.

Tying this fly weedless is also a good idea.  You can then get your mouse into the brush and retrieve it out without worrying as much about loosing it. trout on a mouse I watched my good friend Jeff Murray (www.murraysflyshop.com) raise at least 15 fish on this mouse pattern in the first half hour of this float.  This fish was caught and released in the fall but you can be sure that it is just as productive in the spring.  Note that not all rivers will produce trout on mouse patterns but most rivers in Alaska will with the right conditions. I hope to hear stories of you catching rainbow trout on mouse patterns too! It is always fun to raise fish on dry flies and even more fun to fish a dry that you will not have any problems following. give us a call anytime to line up your next Alaska kenai river guide trip. Have fun tying, Scott Sager www.driftingonthefly.com

LITTLE SUSITNA RIVER FLY FISHING

Little Susitna river fly fishing can be very productive.  We have hooked many king salmon, silver salmon, and rainbow trout on the fly in this system.  Here is a picture of a king salmon hooked up on the fly rod.  This fish took a purple articulated leech on the swing.  Thanks to John Colmen and Jeff Murray for making the 2008 little Susitna trip a success.  John and Jeff moved the camp boat, set up camp and cooked every day.  Enjoying a great trip and just having them in camp added that much more to a great experience.  You can catch up with these guys deep in the Shenandoah national park fishing for spooky brook trout or on the Shenandoah rivers fly casting for small mouth bass.  If you would enjoy this or if it is close to your neck of the woods look them up at www.murraysflyshop.com.

Thanks again guys and good fishing, Scott Sager Drifting On The Fly, LLC

Shenandoah smallmouth bass fishing

copy-of-hunting-055.jpgcopy-of-hunting-050.jpg Shenandoah smallmouth bass fishing can be very good in the spring.  The days are getting longer and it seems that you can get a lot more done.  Two  weeks ago I visited my home town of Strasburg, VA for my grandparents 65th wedding anniversary!  It was a very nice but a short visit.  I did get a chance to fish for only a few  hours with the folks at Murrays fly shop (www.murraysflyshop.com).  We fished the north fork of the Shenandoah river throwing leaches with a slow retrieve.  I managed to land a 10-12″ smallmouth and John  landed a solid 12″ fish.  It was nice to get out and see that the fish were willing to play. copy-of-hunting-052.jpg Thanks and there will be more posts this week and a few pictures. Be sure to check out my new website layout at www.driftingonthefly.com to book a trip! Tight lines

Hope to see you on the river and if you have any questions feel free to contact me anytime. Tight Lines, Scott Drifting On The Fly, LLC

Willow Creek Fly Fishing

Willow Creek Alaska Guided Rainbow Trout Grayling and Dolly Varden Fly Fishing with Guide Scott Sager Willow creek fly fishing opportunities are action packed and exciting.  September Rainbow trout fishing is great almost everywhere in Alaska now. Most of the Salmon are at the end of their life cycle and the trout are really keying in on this food source right now.   I fished Willow Creek with the folks from Murray’s fly shop on Tuesday and we had a spectacular time.  The fishing on the many streams off the Parks highway are easily accessible and full of fish.  The rainbow Trout seemed to concentrate at the confluence of the Susitna and Willow Creek in good numbers today.  We caught three species of fish in about 30 minutes.  Grayling, Dolly Varden, and Rainbow trout were our main focus letting the salmon spawn with no harassment of big streamers in there spawning beds. Once a salmon sets up on its spawning bed or also known as a red they will protect this area by taking anything that passes through this area.  Willow creek fly fishing is a lot of fun, mostly wade fishing opportunities and  A great place to check out. Hope to see you on the river!

We can get you lined up on a Willow creek fly fishing trip upon request and will be happy to show you the river.  Just another Alaska fishing opportunity.
