Kenai river rainbow trout fishing

I was able to maneuver the boat close enough for my guest to get some great photos. Wildlife along the Kenai river is abundant and you never know what you might see on a day trip with us. 20120906-192414.jpg 20120906-192426.jpg This young Alaska brown bear was really trying hard to catch a fish and finally did.  I think he will winter just fine. 20120906-192439.jpg Kenai river Rainbow trout fishing was good today again and I hope it continues through the whole fall. Our fish have enough of a food source to hold them over for a long time this year with the pink salmon in the river. Pink salmon show up on the kenai river on even numbered years. 20120906-192758.jpg 20120906-192904.jpg The guys caught lots of fish today and managed to hang a very large fish but didn’t land it.  The opportunity to catch a world class rainbow trout is very high on the kenai river with fish caught daily 24-28 inches and an occasional 30 inch plus fish. Alaska fishing and hunting

20120905-234203.jpg Alaska fishing and hunting on the Kasilof river!  Yesterday morning my friend Brian Richards of wilderness way in Soldotna Alaska and i set out on a day trip that would end up for us to tell our kids about one day. We put my private boat in the river with 5 rods one shotgun and a good dog for an 18 mile venture. By the end of the trip we had taken 5 ducks, caught silver salmon, dolly vardon and hooked a steelhead. Any person that takes a day trip in the outdoors can appreciate this kind of adventure. The best part of our day was watching Tok my black lab do what he lives to do!! ( hunt ). After a year of being cooped up he flawlessly retrieved all the birds and three of them I know we would have never found without him! 20120905-235043.jpg He is not the best bird dog but it’s great to see him after the start of his second hunting season really pull it together. I love to fish but live to hunt and to share it with him is a whole new experience. 20120905-235451.jpg He can be so lazy too!! Check us out at Drifting on the Fly for some great Alaska fishing information or at wilderness way for your out door gear needs. Tight lines Scott Sager Remember when you head out on an Alaska river trip that the tides near the inlets can be huge. A high tide and a little wind can hold you up for hours if you aren’t prepared for it. Plan on an outgoing tide if you don’t have a little kicker to help you out. 20120906-073349.jpg

Willow creek chum salmon

This large Willow creek chum salmon was caught on a fly off  parks highway last week. Chum salmon are a hard fighting salmon, They are very aggressive and will fight to the end.  Thrashing gear and running you up and down the river hoping not to get spooled.  As you can see this fish put up such a fight that the line cut his mouth in multiple places he wasn’t coming to hand with any ease.  There is no way to avoid this, it’s like hooking a locomotive and trying to stop it. This fish was released and handled properly once to hand. It will continue its journey and end it’s life on a spawning bed in just a week or so.  There are many fishing opportunities for chum salmon and if you are interested in targeting these fish we will be happy to help you out. Chum salmon are not as desirable to eat as other salmon but for a sport angler they may be as great of a fish to catch as any!  I recommend a 8-9 weight fly rod for these fish and wouldn’t hesitate to use a 10 weight to bring the fish in a little faster. Kenai river rainbow trout

Kenai river rainbow trout fishing continues to be off the hook.  I am noticing the change from the kenai river rainbow trout following the king salmon spawn to following the pink salmon spawn now.  Our technique will not change but our fishing locations are switched up a bit when this happens.  Keeping in tune with what is going on with the river keeps you into fish. Bent rods means happy clients and that is our main goal here at Drifting on the Fly. 20120902-120158.jpg Drift boat fishing is a great way to fish kenai river rainbow trout but when the river is big the power boats are legal it is a great option for reworking productive runs. 20120902-120217.jpg Keep a large rubber net under every fish I intend on releasing help in keeping them from ending up in the floor of the boat.   20120902-120310.jpg Taking a break from a great morning to have a little lunch. The fishing is good because these anglers refuse to eat or drink if their arms are not sore at lunch time.  I love the experience that fishing gives to people.  The camaraderie and sportsmanship that plays out almost everyday I am at work makes my job not work at all.   Tight lines Scott Sager contact us here 20120902-120418.jpg 20120902-130652.jpg

Alaska fly out fishing

The trip was a success yesterday. The day started off by walking the river, fishing our way down down stream. Fishing was very slow until the tide change in the afternoon. Once this happened fishing was excellent. I didn’t get any pictures of fish today because there was so many bears around. Once the fish showed up the bears showed up. The guys couldn’t believe the experience they where getting and came back with some heavy poundage of silver salmon.  We are off to fish rainbow trout on the Kenai river.  The number one policy of any remote Alaska fly out fishing trip is safety first fishing second.  If you are on a fly out with us and bears approach the stream to fish we will back off until they are a safe distance away.  This will ensure that they don’t look to humans as a source of a easy meal and we disturb their natural habits as little as possible. Fly Out Fishing Trip

A fly out fishing trip in Alaska is a bit more expensive due to the cost of the flight but if you are interested in fishing around more bears than people this is sometimes the only option.  The group and I showed up just a little early this morning at the flight service for our fly out fishing trip. I like to have time to go through my gear one more time before take off And not be in a rush. Today’s weather outlook is great. It should be as good of a day as you can get for flying in the Alaska mountain. We are headed out to chase silver salmon on the fly today. The tide and timing should be excellent for being successful but no matter what the trip will be beautiful. 20120829-072323.jpg   20120829-072336.jpg 20120829-072352.jpg 20120829-072403.jpg Tim from Natron air in Soldotna Alaska has flown me out with guest many times now. He has a well maintained, clean and reliable plane.  It’s quit an experience landing on a beach in the middle of no where.  Depending on where we fly will determine if we use a wheeled plane or a plane on floats. I will report in on the trip when we get back after we get back. Tight lines Scott Sager Www.driftingonthefly.com

Alaska rainbow trout fishing

20120827-224002.jpg Float planes often cruise the Kenai River and can land in many places.  It is quit an experience to have a float plane buzz you while you are in Alaska rainbow trout fishing. The rainbow trout have moved behind the king salmon and there are fish feeding through out the whole system right now. 20120827-224325.jpg Alaska rainbow trout fishing can be very frustrating if you do not match the hatch.  The hatch being flesh and eggs from the salmon.  When the Rainbows key in on this rich food source you will be hard pressed catching them on any other imitations. The first to spawn are the King salmon.  King salmon eggs are around 9-12 mm in size and vary in color depending on light and time that they have been in the water.   20120827-224509.jpg Often in the fall you can find bears feeding along the gravel bars.  This bear was spotted below rainbow alley on the middle kenai river.  He chased sea gulls and found an easy meal right in front of us while we fished.  I love it when guest that have never seen an Alaska brown bear have the opportunity to hang out with them on the river. Half gallon flask club

20120824-213403.jpg 20120824-213413.jpg I got my flask back today from getting engraved! On the back I am planning on engraving your name on it when you catch a 30″ rainbow trout or better and/or a king salmon 50#’s or better. Over the years I haven’t kept as good of track of this accomplishment as I should have and in the future you can bet that I will never forget another one! I know lots of you that are following this blog have fished with me before and am asking you to give me a call, text or email if you have caught a extremely big fish on tape with me and i will be happy to add you to the half gallon flask club! Kasilof river silver salmon fishing

kasilof river silver salmon fishing today was good. There are still a lot of pink salmon coming into the river. Pinks or also known as humpies are a great fighting fish and provide lots of action for anglers. They are not as desirable for table fare as silvers because they do not freeze as well to eat later.  Most of our silver salmon were caught bouncing cured eggs of the bottom of the river.  The kasilof river isn’t as clear as some river due to the glacier silt and this is why bait with scent works well for catching fish here 20120824-212654.jpg We were just shy of a limit today but that didn’t matter to these folks. We had a great day on the kasilof river and even barbecued some fresh silver salmon on the boat today! 20120824-212919.jpg Give us a call for your next Kasilof river silver salmon fishing trip and we will custom build a package for you that suites your expectations on the Kenai peninsula and beyond!
