Kenai River Trip

driftingonthefly.com

When the fishing is good on a kenai river trip there is little time for sitting around.  Here Kim and Jeff are excited about a great net job on a sockeye salmon.

A Good kenai River Trip for Sockeye Salmon should be scheduled for the middle of June and from the middle of July until the second week in August.  Fishing for Sockeye Salmon begins in June on the Kenai river and will last until mid august some years.  There are two runs of sockeye salmon on the Kenai river.  The first run which is known as the russian river run of sockeye salmon which opens on June 11th and usually peaks around the 20th of June.  The second run of sockeye salmon will start filtering in with the end of the first run and should peak around the middle of July.  The second run of fish in many recent years has brought hundreds of thousands of fish into the system.  Usually by the second week in August the fishing has passed its peak for sockeye salmon and we are moving on to rainbow trout and silver salmon fishing.

If you are in for a fun and exciting Kenai river trip lets chase some sockeye salmon.  We will get to one of my favorite gravel bars in either a drift boat or power boat and set up for a great day of fishing.  The limit of sockeye salmon per person per day is 3 unless fish and game releases an emergency order to allow more fish to be harvested.  When this happens it usually goes up to 6 per person.

sockeye salmon fishing

Sockeye Salmon fishing on the Kenai river can be very productive.   Today we are lower in the With almost 1.5 million sockeye salmon that have entered this year the fish are not to hard to find. Now we may start to see a few that are starting to turn but there are still plenty of chrome fish available. It didn’t take this group but a couple hours of sockeye salmon fishing and they have their bag limit. When you have the feel for hooking sockeye salmon they can be easy to catch and coming by in Good numbers Coming by also helps! Rainbow trout and silver salmon season are now upon us. I look forward to this time of year! Personally I don’t think it gets any better. 20120805-094931.jpg If you plan on keeping some sockeye salmon make sure you keep them cool and out of the sun.  Keeping your fish on a stringer does this and it also washes most of the blood out of the fish making them all eat much better.  Bleeding your fish is the single most important thing to do once you have harvested it.  You can bleed your fish by cutting each side of the gills.  Harvesting salmon is part of fishing in Alaska and though we do plenty of catch and release.  Make sure that at the beginning of the day you let us know if you are planning on a day of catch and release or if you would like to harvest a few fish to take home.  Depending on the regulation and the bite we will do our best to provide a quality day on the river for you.

Starting them off right

Starting them off right by giving my buddies kid an experience of driving the boat after a day of Sockeye salmon fishing on the Kenai river, under close supervision of course. 20120802-180701.jpg

Kenai river salmon fishing

20120801-233228.jpg Kenai river salmon fishing is a great way to spend quality time with the family.  Today I fished a family from Talahasie Florida. A grandfather, daughter and granddaughters are on a fishing trip to Alaska. Ken the grandfather can’t get around like he used to so we had him in the captains seat along a good gravel bar. We will do whatever we can to make your experience as good as it can be when you book a kenai river fishing trip with us.  Our boats are large, spacious and very stable. If you have a disability or can’t get around like you could before we can work with you so you too can have the experience of kenai river salmon fishing. 20120801-233945.jpg 20120801-234204.jpg The girls where there more to enjoy spending time with their grandfather than to fish but I think they had a good time fishing too? Large groups

20120730-120536.jpg Our company is happy to handle large groups.  Our guides are willing to work together and keep the group on the same gravel bar if at all possible.  If we are boat fishing the boats will hang together in the runs so that camaraderie is enjoyed by everyone.  In just a few hours on a evening half day sockeye salmon trip this group of anglers did very well. We don’t often offer half day trips but we will provide them if requested.  Salmon fishing is at its peak right now and it should hold up for another couple of weeks. They ended up with a large stringer and had a great experience.  Large groups are welcome on the kenai river. We are able to handle groups of 2-20 anglers per day, we can accommodate up to 4 anglers per boat. Fishing gear, hot coffee, water, and snacks are provided with your trip.  You will need a fishing license, a packed lunch, and rain gear.  We can provide rain gear and waders if requested. Booking a fishing trip with us is very easy.  Give us a call or contact us here for more details Tight lines, Scott Sager Www.driftingonthefly.com

Kenai river Sockeye salmon fishing

20120729-215653.jpg Hanging this afternoon on the Kenai river sockeye salmon fishing.  Waiting for the next push of fish to make their way up the river. 20120729-215928.jpg Before to long the girls where back kenai river sockeye salmon fishing and we had a few fish for them to take home in just a couple hours. The fish where running super tight to the bank today so this makes it very easy to cast your line out far enough. Later in the afternoon we went rainbow trout fishing. The fish are keying in on the king salmon spawn. We caught plenty of trout and had an awesome time fishing the Kenai river. Thanks ladies! 20120729-223205.jpg At the end of every day on the river I clean the boat to make sure it is presentable for the next days fishing.  I can’t promise that the fish will bite but I stay up on what is going on on the river and I provide clean high quality gear.  If you are looking to book a fishing trip on the Kenai River give us a call.  We will be happy to work with you in designing a fishing vacation that you will not forget.

Evening fishing for sockeye salmon on the Kenai river

Evening fishing for sockeye salmon on the Kenai river has been very good. The Kenai river has gotten over a million sockeye salmon so far. I’ve noticed that most people and guides are starting early in the morning and finding a limit fairly quick. The fish have been pushing through all day most days and I find that I can get the gravel bar of my choice if I fish a little later.  This is clearing up the banks for space to fish by mid afternoon and the sockeye salmon are still pushing by very good.  I do notice that when the sun is higher up like today that the fish move a little further off the bank.  This means more weight and more line to manage but with a little coaching these folks got the hang of it quick. 20120729-130335.jpg Having this whole high bank to ourselves is not common during the peak of the season, a great reason for evening fishing for sockeye salmon on the Kenai river. 20120729-130353.jpg   I even had an opportunity to catch a fish for myself today.  I don’t usually fish on trips but with just two people I found time to make a few drifts.  The sun is out and It is a beautiful day to be sockeye salmon fishing on the kenai river!

sockeye salmon fishing

20120727-082121.jpg Sockeye salmon fishing in the afternoon can be very productive on the Kenai river.  The peak season to fish for sockeye salmon is about July 12th through August 10th most years.  Ocean run fish have there own schedule though and these dates can very on either or both ends by a few days.  Good sockeye salmon fishing can be accessed in many areas that you can walk into but this is a very popular time of year and these areas can be very congested.  This is probably the best reason for hiring Drifting on the Fly for a day trip.  We will do our best to find you a productive gravel bar that is not as busy as some of the road side accessible spots.  Though there still might be people around it shouldn’t be elbow to elbow. These folks traveled to Alaska from Arkansas to try their luck out on the Kenai river for sockeye salmon and did very well. The afternoon fishing can be as good as the morning fishing. Usually others have limited out or called it quits. This means we have a good chance at getting on a great gravel bar. Half day afternoon trips are available and the cost is 200.00 dollars plus tax for a half day fishing trip. Give us a call or click the book now link!
