Starting them off right

Starting them off right by giving my buddies kid an experience of driving the boat after a day of Sockeye salmon fishing on the Kenai river, under close supervision of course. 20120802-180701.jpg

Sockeye salmon

20120731-131739.jpg Fishing for sockeye salmon in the Kenai river can be a lot of fun. Today’s group found a limit of fish with ease.  Once you are dialed in on the techniques and get the feel for fishing for sockeye salmon they can be easy to catch.  These fish are hard fight, very acrobatic and can flat out destroy gear. Once you have landed the fish you are allowed to keep 6 per person right now or release it depending what you want to do. This group decided to only keep what they though they could eat over the winter. Sockeye salmon are tasty anyway you decide to cook them and I promise there will be no color added to the fillet! 20120731-132456.jpg Chrome bright sockeye salmon are best for taking home.  If you catch a fish that has been in the river to long I will recommend that you release it and try to catch a fresher fish.  The best part of guided sockeye salmon fishing is being able to get to productive gravel bars and away from the mass crowds.  Sockeye salmon fishing is very popular and you might have to share a gravel bar but I will do my best to keep you out of a combat fishing zone.

Kenai river sockeye salmon fishing

Started the day of with a father daughter and father son kenai river sockeye salmon fishing trip. The kids were out of bed early and happy the be going fishing. We pulled into a good gravel bar on the Middle Kenai river to start our fishing trip Fish pushed by steadily and we managed to get a few. With a little assistance the kids each got a couple fish. 20120714-130006.jpg Young anglers enjoy Kenai river sockeye salmon fishing as much as anyone.  What a great fishery to start off your fishing career! 20120714-130056.jpg Chrome Sockeye salmon are the best to eat.  They are not as desirable the longer they are in the river.   20120714-130134.jpg Today’s trip was won on a free drawing at the Matanuska valley sportsmans show here in Alaska. I donated this trip the the Mat-su valley medical center to raffle off in their booth. Jeff Anderson of Alaska won the trip for 4 on the Kenai river. The kids were a blast catching sockeye salmon on the Kenai river today and I look forward to having them back on the boat. Tight lines, Scott Sager Www.driftingonthefly.com

Kenai river sockeye salmon fishing

I was able to get on the same gravel bar today that I had yesterday and managed to scrape together my two limits. Kenai river Sockeye salmon fishing is still spotty but fish are passing up river in small spurts. Hard work and determination will pay off at the end of the day with a limit of reds (sockeye salmon). Look for better pushes of fish in the next few days. 20120711-131729.jpg When the numbers of fish are just starting to show up I prefer to move lower in the system and find a hard bend in the river.  Usually with a hard bend in the river there tends to be a back Eddie and fish will hold up there.  Get right above the Eddie in faster water and wait for fish to push by.  This has payed off for me many times. Yesterday’s Kenai river red run estimate was 6500 fish for a total of 56,000 fish so far. When I’m not chasing king salmon, I am chasing reds in July. If you have any interest in a trip for either of these salmon give us a call at 907-382-6808 or check us out on the website at www.driftingonthefly.com

I had the pleasure of fishing with my family on the last day of King salmon season and this 53″ Buck took an orange spin and gloe with some cured salmon eggs.  We ended up landing this fish more than a mile from where it was hooked!! This is a very large King salmon caught on the Kasilof river and everyone is very proud of it.  Our boat has been fishing good and this is a great way to end the King salmon season here in Alaska.   Though king fishing season is over look for more pictures and info about king fishing with us in the future from us.   The  season is really not that far away so if you are interested in a prime date be sure to book early. The last three weeks in July on the Kenai Peninsula seem to book faster and faster each year. Guided kasilof or Kenai river King salmon fishing can be a great experience like my family had when you are with a guide that takes pride in his job Tight lines, Scott

Kenai river sockeye salmon fishing

Kenai river sockeye salmon fishing can be fast and furious! The 2nd run Kenai river Sockeye salmon are starting to show up in good numbers.  Today we saw lots of fish moving through and look to see even more in the next couple of days. kenai-river-sockeye-salmon-fishing-002 This is one of the Sockeye salmon we caught today fishing Kenai River.  A long leader with just enough weight to bounce along the bottom will get you hooked up on one of these hard fighting fish. kenai-river-sockeye-salmon-fishing-004 While out on the river don’t forget to take a minute to see what is passing you by.  This common merganser was out teaching her little ones how to fish. The scenery is hard to beet while on the Kenai river sockeye salmon fishing as well. Guided sockeye salmon fishing will continue through the middle of August so it is not to late to get your seat on the boat to chase these great fighting fish. tight lines, Scott www.driftingonthefly.com
