Middle Kenai River Fishing

Middle kenai river fishing is very popular.  We chase Rainbow trout, dolly varden, silver salmon and sockeye salmon on this section of river. alaska rainbow trout fishing Rainbow Trout fishing the kenai river is good day here and a so so day there but we look for it to get real good any day. Rainbow trout that are over 25 inches are not uncommon here and 30 inch fish are landed many times throughout the season.  Middle kenai river trout fishing is good in June, August, September and October.  Book a trip on the middle kenai river and then a steelhead fishing trip or two and let us show you a great fishing vacation. KENAI PENINSULA GUIDED FISHING

Kenai peninsula guided fishing for Trophy Rainbow trout fishing combined with sockeye salmon fishing makes for a fun day.  Kenai river king salmon fishing is also available at this time of year. The Sockeye Salmon fishing should pick up again near the end of the  first week of July and be good through the second week of Aug.  That has been the norm for the last few years.  These are hard fighting fish with a built in instinct to trash gear you can plan on some excitement.  If you plan to chase these fish on your own make sure that you put a little extra in your gear so the odds of getting them to shore gets a little better. The  Rainbow trout bite has been very good while fly fishing leeches and minnow imitations.  I like to fish a down and across drift right now with a sink tip line.  The water has been very clear but is now coming up with just a little color. Cordova Alaska Fishing

I will be in Cordova Alaska fishing for the next week for steelhead, sea run cutthroat, rainbow trout, and Dolly Varden.  The fishing should be good unless the rivers get blown out and it is calling for rain throughout the week. It’s that time in Alaska!  I haven’t been able to get out and fish to much due to the weather and work but that’s all over for now.  I hope that everyone is enjoying their spring and getting a line wet now and then. SHIP CREEK

Today I got off work, removed my studded tires and got my all terrains back on the truck. After I got my chores done I found time to go and explore a stream here in Anchorage. Ship Creek is a well known Salmon run river that holds a few Rainbow trout too. I didn’t spend much time fishing it but it did produce a couple of small rainbows. I was using a Murray hellgrammite size 10, dead drifting it. That fly seems to produce more fish for me than any other in my fly box! I don’t know if it is confidence or what.. but I tend to tie this fly own my line more times than not when I approach new water.  I have never fished salmon in this stream but I understand that it can produce quit a few fish during the peak of the seasons as well.

I’m moving back down to the Kenai peninsula next week to get gear ready for the upcoming season. FLY FISHING THE KENAI RIVER

Fly fishing the kenai river is a great way to spend time on your vacation. I recently was asked the question ‘What rod would you recommend for Rainbow trout fishing on the Kenai River’?  I thought about it and my answer: there is a rod for every situation.  On the Upper kenai River I like to use a 9′ – 10′ 6 or 7 weight and  then a 7-8 weight on the Middle Kenai river for rainbow trout and dolly varden.  I think it comes down to preference when choosing a rod.  One thing that I do consider is the amount of weight of the fly you are casting and the size of fish that you could latch on to.  No matter the weight of the rod I believe that a 10′ rod or longer even is your best length for big mends and long leaders!

Whenever you approach a stream or river make sure you look before you wade.  Fish will often be feeding close to the bank and this is a fish you can catch instead of spooking into deeper water.

TROUT BEADS FOR THE KENAI RIVER

copy-of-beads-004.jpg Rainbow trout beads for the kenai river come in a lot of different sizes and colors.  Give them a realistic look by painting them in the color of a real salmon egg.  There are so many different stages of color that a real salmon egg has so have a large selection of trout beads for the kenai river. A good way to make sure you have everything you need for the kenai river rainbow trout season is to start early.  It also makes for more fishing time when you get a chance to go! Anywhere there is fish spawning you should at least have a few beads in your box. We use many different flies, beads, and lures to fish the kenai river.  Beads are just another weapon in your box for you fishing adventure on the kenai. Kenai River Rainbow Trout Fishing

Kenai river rainbow trout fishing on the Upper river today.  This young man caught one of the largest upper kenai river rainbow trout that I have landed on my boat. Kids should have all the luck! Landing Big upper kenai river rainbow trout on light tackle or fly is a real treat. The current is swift and there are many obstacles that can end a battle with a big fish quickly. So many times a fish like this will out play the most experience fisher person. A long run a couple of jumps and some good luck and this fish fell to the net and got to pose for the camera.  The Kenai river offers good fishing from the start of the system all the way to the end of the system.  Depending on timing and what is happening on the river will determine which section of river we will pursue.  I often fish the upper kenai river in the fall. COLD WEATHER FISHING

Cold weather fishing on the kenai river! Need a fishing fix? The Kenai River has good wintertime Dolly Varden fishing ,rainbow trout and is low enough to easily wade fish, unless your rod ends up like this one. I am afraid it’s there until Spring Break-Up??? Guided Kenai River Fly Fishing with a fly rod that’s not frozen in it’s holder When the temperatures dip and the snow falls we tend to slow down a little and wait until the warmest parts of the day to go fishing.  Daylight isn’t as long now and we have to make the best of the last few trips of the year.  Mostly steelhead fishing and rainbow trout on the kenai river is what we prefer but don’t count out some late season silver salmon fishing.  This can make for an exciting day out on the water and casting longer distances can keep a guy warm!. FLY FISHING STEELHEAD

Fly Fishing the Kenai River for a few cold rainbow trout Fly Fishing Steelhead on the Kenai Peninsula is for the dedicated angler.  Steelhead are an ocean run rainbow trout and will return to the fresh water to spawn.  Fresh steelhead are as hard of a fighting fish that you can catch in fresh water.  I put them at the top of the list to pursue.  Once hooked up you will never forget the power that this fish has to offer. We fished a few streams on the Kenai Peninsula this past week for steelhead and……… typical steelhead weather arrived. Snow, rain and cold weather. The precipitation eventually made the streams unproductive due to discolored water. So, we floated the middle section of the Kenai and had good rainbow fishing with the largest fish measuring 25 inches. Right now the Kenai is on its way up after an ice dam broke above Kenai Lake. The river levels are equal to what you would normally expect in July. I am hopeful that we will have a few more days of fishing after the river drops back. The steelhead streams are in great shape now. Egg sucking anything or beads for either fishery and a few flesh flies while the Kenai is full. Remember Silver salmon fishing season ended on 10/31 so don’t take them out of the water when you accidentally hook them. FLY FISHING ON THE KENAI PENINSULA

Winter fly fishing on the kenai peninsula, Alaska   The Kenai Peninsula continues to produce both steelhead and rainbow trout in the right stream. The steelhead fishing continue to arrive daily in those streams that support steelhead and since these streams have not iced over yet, fishing has been  productive. Streamers and eggs continue to produce with mixed results from day to day. Don’t hesitate to change patterns and technique fairly often if things don’t seem to be working. When you find low clear water be careful about spooking fish, once you spook them often they will just move into deeper water and hold in plain sight, fishing to a spooked fish or two is a waste of time. Move on! The Kenai River continues to provide great rainbow fishing. The Silver Salmon are pretty much done and the season ends today. Beads continue to produce the best in the rainbow department.
