Rainbow trout fishing the Kenai river is always something I look forward too, even on day 100 I still find the motivation to get gear together and make my way to the river. It is always helpful to see the river when the water is very low. At Cooper Landing the Flow was around 600 CFS and below Skilak lake it was flowing around 840 CFS. This gives me a lot of information for the following guide season on where rainbow trout might be holding.
We picked up a few rainbow trout around Princess rapids on the upper Kenai River. The temperature was in the low 20’s all morning and eventually came up to were we could fish without freezing up to bad. Thanks to the Jet-boil we were able to take a break and have some hot coffee.
Not removing the fish from the water on very cold days is a great idea, plus it’s much better for your hands!
I’m sure that leeches and flesh flies would have picked a few fish up but there were a lot of silver salmon spawning. We knew that we would be fighting almost dead silvers all day were we were fishing if we used streamers. Egg patterns seemed to be the ticket and we didn’t pick up many silvers at all. Both dead egg patterns and fresh egg patterns picked up a few rainbow trout and dolly varden.

Drifting on the Fly, LLC proudly added a Willie Predator power boat to the business. The boat is 20 feet long and is 72 inches wide and is powered by a 50 horse power Mercury motor and has a 9.9 horse power Mercury motor for secondary power. Though running a drift boat on the Kenai River for salmon, Dolly Varden and rainbow trout has its place, the power boat has its benefits as well.
The use of a powerboat for rainbow trout fishing on the middle Kenai River is a very effective way to have a chance at big Kenai River rainbow trout. This boat also allows us to easily fish the lower Kenai River for king salmon. With a 50-horse power engine on the back of the boat running multiple drifts through a hole can be done in no time.
The option to fish for rainbow trout, silver salmon, or sockeye salmon on the middle river in a power boat is now available. I have owned and run power boats for years and it is nice to finally add one to our guided fishing operation.
We are looking forward to another great fishing season. Booking a guide trip on the kenai river with Drifting on the Fly easy!

Alaska fly out fishing trips are a great way to experience the state and make for a hardcore fishing adventure that you will never forget.
Since 2003 we have been working hard at exploring remote rivers in Alaska so that we can offer back country trips as a part of our operation. I have fished many rivers only accessed by float plane and in June of 2009 we traveled to the headwaters of King Salmon river to start a week long float. A great group of guys and committed fly anglers in search of Arctic Grayling, Arctic Char, pike, king salmon and Rainbow Trout! We put this short video of the trip together to share with you. I hope that you find watching the video as interesting as we did making it! The video can be found on You tube.
If you are interested in an extreme trip in the wilds of Alaska give us a call to find out more on how you get it booked today! These kind of trips are not for everyone but for groups that don’t mind roughing it a bit it can be quit an experience.

Kenai river trout fishing in the winter can be good one day and just OK the next. Inconsistent temperatures has a lot to do with this. The peak season of kenai river trout fishing is June, August, September and October.
The first weekend of Dec. was beautiful on the Kenai river. We didn’t catch a ton of rainbow trout but enough to keep us motivated. Skilak lake is now starting to freeze over and wade fishing opportunities are about all that is available now. The weather was excellent today with temperatures over 30 degrees! I wasn’t out on the Kenai river but I know a few people that took full advantage and look forward to the report. Winter fishing is a great time of year to get out on the Kenai river, so pick a window of good weather and get outside! Good luck and we’ll see you out there. Keep us in mind for your summer trip to the kenai peninsula as well. If you would like to inquire about a Kenai river trout fishing trip give us a call.
Peak season kenai river trout fishing trips are getting very popular. Make sure if you are interested in this special time of year that you book early in the year to ensure your spot on the boat! We have many guided fishing trip opportunities on the kenai river and surrounding areas so gives us a ring and lets talk about your next fishing trip to Alaska!.

Fall Rainbow trout fishing on the kenai river has been very good this fall. Friends and clients are all getting into big fish and lots of them. Follow the sockeye salmon and you will be sure to find a concentration of quality rainbow trout. Flesh flies are starting to really produce some good fish as well. The fishing season is coming to an end fast but there is still time to get out on the river with us one more time. We offer a quality guided fishing operation and would love to show you what we know about this area.

This picture is of Kim Sager with a 30 inch rainbow trout caught in the kenai river canyon this fall. Kim has been fly fishing this area for years and this is the biggest fish she has landed. A monster Kenai river rainbow isn’t landed on every trip but the odds definitely go up when you fish where they live. If you think that you may like to fish this season call asap to reserve your spot. Only a few more weeks of fishing and limited spots are available!
Thanks for following us and steelhead season is right around the corner! call today to book a guided kenai river rainbow trout or steel head trip

Taking a guided kenai river trout fishing trip will improve your odds of landing that fish of a lifetime. We spend a lot of days chasing rainbow trout here in Alaska ever year and the Kenai river offers some of the best road accessible trout fishing in the world. You can go on a do it yourself fishing trip on this system and have a great time but to have someone that fish’s it every day and also has the means of transportation is worth it’s weight in gold. We can fish the Upper, Middle and lower kenai river with our boats. Depending on the time of year will determine where we fish. If you have a section of river already on your mind give us a call so we can schedule your trip in the most productive times of year.
Drifting On The Fly, LLCRainbow trout and dolly varden fishing on the kenai river continues to get better ever day. It is easy to book a guided kenai river trout fishing trip, just give us a call and we will hook you up. We work hard to keep our anglers on fish and will coach you into the right presentation that will keep them on the line for you. Not every fish is landed but if that were the case there would be no since in going. Come see if you are one of the lucky ones to land a 30 inch rainbow trout on a guided kenai river fishing trip!
This is one of the better photos of today’s guided trip.

Guided Kasilof river King salmon fishing is officially over on the Kenai peninsula now. The end of July marks the end of King salmon fishing on the Kenai peninsula. Though it was a great season we are now geared up and focused on Silver Salmon, Sockeye salmon and rainbow trout fishing now.
www.driftingonthefly.com
I had the pleasure of fishing with my family on the last day of King salmon season and this 53″ Buck took an orange spin and gloe with some cured salmon eggs. We ended up landing this fish more than a mile from where it was hooked!! This is a very large King salmon caught on the Kasilof river and everyone is very proud of it. Our boat has been fishing good and this is a great way to end the King salmon season here in Alaska.
Though king fishing season is over look for more pictures and info about king fishing with us in the future from us. The season is really not that far away so if you are interested in a prime date be sure to book early. The last three weeks in July on the Kenai Peninsula seem to book faster and faster each year. Guided kasilof or Kenai river King salmon fishing can be a great experience like my family had when you are with a guide that takes pride in his job
