Kenai River Rainbow Trout Fishing

June 11th is the day that the entire Kenai River is open to rainbow trout fishing.  We will start our season off fishing the Middle Kenai river in a drift boat until the 15th of June.  This allows us to fish in a preferred section of the river that is closed to the use of power boats.  Once the river opens up to the use of motors in this section we will then offer guided trips with the power boat.  Drift boat trips will still be offered if this is your preferred boat to fish out of or if we are fishing in the Upper Kenai river.  Both Boats are effective ways to pursue Kenai river rainbow trout. kasilof river drift boat powerboat1           Kenai river Rainbow trout fishing will continue to be good through the end of June.  In July the rainbow trout fishing tends to tapper off a little but then picks back up again in early August.  In August September and October Kenai River rainbow trout fishing will continue to be good.  The Kenai river offers excellent opportunities for trophy fish on both fly and light tackle.  Our Guide service will supply all tackle, flies, waders (if needed), rain gear (if you do not have your own) and rods needed for your trip.  We also will have water, hot coffee, and snacks on board.  You will need: sunglasses, extra layers of clothing, a packed lunch, and a valid fishing license for the day. Along with guided Kenai river rainbow trout fishing trips, we also offer guided king salmon fishing, silver salmon fishing, sockeye salmon fishing, dolly varden fishing, arctic grayling fishing, and steelhead fishing depending on the time of the season.   All of these species of fish make for an exciting adventure in Alaska.  I fish most every day during the South Central Alaska fishing season and take great pride in showing a quality trip to our guests.  Give us a call or contact us here on the site and we will get you lined up on a great fishing trip on the Kenai Peninsula or surrounding areas here in Alaska. Dolly Varden

wayne leslie Dolly varden guide trips on the Kenai river are available throughout the guide season on the Kenai peninsula and Alaska.  Some of the longer hikes into the Kenai River can produce the best fish.  Also I find that the more effort it takes me to get to the river the less competition I find for my favorite fishing spots.  This particular trail leads us into the middle Kenai River and is three miles from the parking lot.  We are happy to share information with you so give us a call and we will do our best to point you in the right direction.  If a do it yourself fishing trip isn’t something that you are interested in we are happy to take you on a guided trip for any of the species found on the Kenai Peninsula.   The Kenai River offers a variety of species to fish for and dolly varen is one of them.  Year round we can find Dolly Varden in the Kenai River just like this one.  This day was beautiful and a balmy 29 degrees.  Dead drifting the right color egg pattern fooled this fish.    Dolly Varden in mid February on the middle Kenai River. WILLIE PREDATOR POWER BOAT

Drifting on the Fly, LLC proudly added a Willie Predator power boat to the business. The boat is 20 feet long and is 72 inches wide and is powered by a 50 horse power Mercury motor and has a 9.9  horse power Mercury motor for secondary power. Though running a drift boat on the Kenai River for salmon, Dolly Varden and rainbow trout has its place, the power boat has its benefits as well.

The use of a powerboat for rainbow trout fishing on the middle Kenai River is a very effective way to have a chance at big Kenai River rainbow trout. This boat also allows us to easily fish the lower Kenai River for king salmon.  With a 50-horse power engine on the back of the boat running multiple drifts through a hole can be done in no time.

The option to fish for rainbow trout, silver salmon, or sockeye salmon on the middle river in a power boat is now available.  I have owned and run power boats for years and it is nice to finally add one to our guided fishing operation.

We are looking forward to another great fishing season. Booking a guide trip on the kenai river with Drifting on the Fly easy!

DOLLY VARDEN FISHING ON THE KENAI RIVER

kenai-river-guide-scott-sager-dolly-varden.jpg

Dolly Varden fishing on the Kenai River is often off the hook in the spring until the middle of september.  This beautiful fish was caught in the fall right before the Dolly mVarden spawn.  Dolly Varden are in the char family and spawn in the fall.

When you find spawning Sockeye Salmon you’ll be sure to find a Dolly Varden or two behind them.  With clearer water look for the shadows under and behind the salmon.  They can be hard to see sometimes but whenever you approach the stream or river make sure you spend a minute looking before walking right up to the water.  This fish was caught in the middle of September on the Kenai river and is a very good fish. Large 25 inch or bigger Dolly Varden are caught daily on the kenai river when the bite is going off. Guided Dolly Varden fishing on the Kenai River is easily booked with Drifting on the Fly.  Give us a call or email us here and we will get you hooked up on a fishing trip of a lifetime. FLY FISHING THE KENAI RIVER

Fly fishing the kenai river is a great way to spend time on your vacation. I recently was asked the question ‘What rod would you recommend for Rainbow trout fishing on the Kenai River’?  I thought about it and my answer: there is a rod for every situation.  On the Upper kenai River I like to use a 9′ – 10′ 6 or 7 weight and  then a 7-8 weight on the Middle Kenai river for rainbow trout and dolly varden.  I think it comes down to preference when choosing a rod.  One thing that I do consider is the amount of weight of the fly you are casting and the size of fish that you could latch on to.  No matter the weight of the rod I believe that a 10′ rod or longer even is your best length for big mends and long leaders!

Whenever you approach a stream or river make sure you look before you wade.  Fish will often be feeding close to the bank and this is a fish you can catch instead of spooking into deeper water.

I’d be happy to show you a guided trip down the kenai river.  We have wade fishing, drift boat, and power boat opportunities available.
