KENAI RIVER

The KENAI RIVER is a complex and dynamic system, providing excellent habitat for fisheries.  This excellent habitat helps produce lots of salmon, trout, and more.  All five species of Pacific salmon return to the Kenai River every year, including Chinook (king salmon), coho (silver salmon), chum, pink, and sockeye salmon.  Though the pink salmon only return in big numbers on even number years and there isn’t very many chum salmon that enter the Kenai River.  Other fish species in the Kenai river drainage include rainbow trout, Dolly Varden, and arctic graylingAll of these species can be targeted in a guided fishing trip on the Kenai River or Kenai peninsula. Imagine floating down glacial blue waters, surrounded by snow capped mountains, forested lands, and possible wildlife around every bend of the river, all while waiting for the tremendous ‘take down’ on your rod by any one of the five salmon or other fish species. From peaceful and serene, to action packed and adrenaline rushing……this is what you will experience when your line goes down and everyone yells, “FISH ON!”.  Once the fish is brought to the boat, your guide will help you cherish the memory by taking pictures of your epic catch with a backdrop of glacial waters and mountains. Termination Dust above Kenai Lake Every trip down the Kenai River, whether it’s in a drift boat or powerboat, is one of comfort and space.  To help with those chilly mornings, your guide will have hot coffee to keep you warm.  If you’re looking for a relaxing and fun experience on the Kenai River to fish for a chance for a catch of a lifetime.  Give us a call to discuss your trip plans at 907-382-6808 and BOOK TODAY!

Kenai river rainbow trout fishing

20120808-142451.jpg We were out early this morning for our kenai river rainbow trout fishing trip. Linda and Bill Live in Sterling Alaska and try to fish the Kenai river rainbow trout bite many times a year.  The bite is getting better everyday now, there are days we are landing 50+ fish and some very large fish too.  Here we are drifting the middle kenai river for rainbow trout and dolly Varden that have moved out behind the king salmon. There are some very elaborate private fishing platforms along the Kenai river but this one stands out the most to me! 20120808-142948.jpg I don’t know how many stairs there are to the top but I want to ride the tram that is along side them.  Going up wouldn’t be to bad but coming down all I would think about is doing a belly flop into the full Kenai River!  Whoever built this has to be a character and I would love to sit down and have a beer with them.  I bet you would hear some great stories.  We fish this drift often in August and early September so ask me to point out the stair case to you because i’m sure you will be into your drift more than you are looking for a set of stairs!

sockeye salmon fishing

Sockeye Salmon fishing on the Kenai river can be very productive.   Today we are lower in the With almost 1.5 million sockeye salmon that have entered this year the fish are not to hard to find. Now we may start to see a few that are starting to turn but there are still plenty of chrome fish available. It didn’t take this group but a couple hours of sockeye salmon fishing and they have their bag limit. When you have the feel for hooking sockeye salmon they can be easy to catch and coming by in Good numbers Coming by also helps! Rainbow trout and silver salmon season are now upon us. I look forward to this time of year! Personally I don’t think it gets any better. 20120805-094931.jpg If you plan on keeping some sockeye salmon make sure you keep them cool and out of the sun.  Keeping your fish on a stringer does this and it also washes most of the blood out of the fish making them all eat much better.  Bleeding your fish is the single most important thing to do once you have harvested it.  You can bleed your fish by cutting each side of the gills.  Harvesting salmon is part of fishing in Alaska and though we do plenty of catch and release.  Make sure that at the beginning of the day you let us know if you are planning on a day of catch and release or if you would like to harvest a few fish to take home.  Depending on the regulation and the bite we will do our best to provide a quality day on the river for you.

Kenai river salmon fishing

20120801-233228.jpg Kenai river salmon fishing is a great way to spend quality time with the family.  Today I fished a family from Talahasie Florida. A grandfather, daughter and granddaughters are on a fishing trip to Alaska. Ken the grandfather can’t get around like he used to so we had him in the captains seat along a good gravel bar. We will do whatever we can to make your experience as good as it can be when you book a kenai river fishing trip with us.  Our boats are large, spacious and very stable. If you have a disability or can’t get around like you could before we can work with you so you too can have the experience of kenai river salmon fishing. 20120801-233945.jpg 20120801-234204.jpg The girls where there more to enjoy spending time with their grandfather than to fish but I think they had a good time fishing too? If you would like to spend a day sockeye salmon fishing on the Kenai river give us a call at 907-382-6808 or check us out at www.driftingonthefly.com. Large groups

20120730-120536.jpg Our company is happy to handle large groups.  Our guides are willing to work together and keep the group on the same gravel bar if at all possible.  If we are boat fishing the boats will hang together in the runs so that camaraderie is enjoyed by everyone.  In just a few hours on a evening half day sockeye salmon trip this group of anglers did very well. We don’t often offer half day trips but we will provide them if requested.  Salmon fishing is at its peak right now and it should hold up for another couple of weeks. They ended up with a large stringer and had a great experience.  Large groups are welcome on the kenai river. We are able to handle groups of 2-20 anglers per day, we can accommodate up to 4 anglers per boat. Fishing gear, hot coffee, water, and snacks are provided with your trip.  You will need a fishing license, a packed lunch, and rain gear.  We can provide rain gear and waders if requested. Booking a fishing trip with us is very easy.  Give us a call or contact us here for more details Tight lines, Scott Sager Www.driftingonthefly.com

Kenai river Sockeye salmon fishing

20120729-215653.jpg Hanging this afternoon on the Kenai river sockeye salmon fishing.  Waiting for the next push of fish to make their way up the river. 20120729-215928.jpg Before to long the girls where back kenai river sockeye salmon fishing and we had a few fish for them to take home in just a couple hours. The fish where running super tight to the bank today so this makes it very easy to cast your line out far enough. Later in the afternoon we went rainbow trout fishing. The fish are keying in on the king salmon spawn. We caught plenty of trout and had an awesome time fishing the Kenai river. Tight lines, Scott Sager Www.driftingonthefly.com 907-382-6807 20120729-223048.jpg I even had a little help getting the boat cleaned up tonight! Thanks ladies! 20120729-223205.jpg At the end of every day on the river I clean the boat to make sure it is presentable for the next days fishing.  I can’t promise that the fish will bite but I stay up on what is going on on the river and I provide clean high quality gear.  If you are looking to book a fishing trip on the Kenai River give us a call.  We will be happy to work with you in designing a fishing vacation that you will not forget.

Great Day on the Kenai River

great day on the kenai river and I hope the weather that we have been having lasts! The mornings have been cooler and clear, by mid day the temperatures have been in the mid 70’s. The weather and the great push of sockeye salmon has been a real treat for us after a cooler spring. The total estimated count for the Kenai river sockeye salmon is over one million fish now!! The numbers of salmon and good weather has brought people from all over to the Kenai peninsula. Today I saw two different float planes parked and out fishing for reds. This is not uncommon but it’s great to see people that could go anywhere in the state of Alaska choosing to fish our great Kenai river. Good weather Great fishing makes for an awesome day! Give us a call at 907-382-6808 or check us out at www.driftingonthefly.com if you would like a great day on the kenai river Tight lines, Scott Sager 20120729-102937.jpg 20120729-103104.jpg Float planes often use the middle kenai river.  The fishing is good and there are plenty of places to park and get the plane safely out of the current.

Guided Sockeye salmon fishing

20120725-081415.jpg Guided Sockeye salmon fishing on the kenai river allows us to put you in productive and less crowded areas.  Like everyday we showed up at the on a Kenai river gravel bar just after day light. The fish are passing through a Little slower today but we have managed to land a half dozen sockeye salmon.  July weather tends to be very nice on the Kenai Peninsula most years and the scenery is as good as it gets. 20120725-082110.jpg A couple things to remember on your Sockeye salmon fishing trip with us is your fishing license, a change of cloths, a packed lunch and of cloths and extra pair of socks!! The water temperature is still slightly under 50 degrees so standing in the water with waders on can chill your feet down in a hurry.  Fishing for sockeye salmon is done mostly off of gravel bars wade fishing.  Taking a break once in a while allows you to stay warm for a full days fishing. Full day guided fishing trips are 275.00 dollars and half day fishing trips are 200.00 dollars per person.  Give us a call and we will get you lined up on your next guided sockeye salmon fishing trip.
