WWW.DRIFTINGONTHEFLY.COMThe KENAI RIVER is a complex and dynamic system, providing excellent habitat for fisheries. This excellent habitat helps produce lots of salmon, trout, and more. All five species of Pacific salmon return to the Kenai River every year, including Chinook (king salmon), coho (silver salmon), chum, pink, and sockeye salmon. Though the pink salmon only return in big numbers on even number years and there isn’t very many chum salmon that enter the Kenai River. Other fish species in the Kenai river drainage include rainbow trout, Dolly Varden, and arctic grayling. All of these species can be targeted in a guided fishing trip on the Kenai River or Kenai peninsula.Imagine floating down glacial blue waters, surrounded by snow capped mountains, forested lands, and possible wildlife around every bend of the river, all while waiting for the tremendous ‘take down’ on your rod by any one of the five salmon or other fish species. From peaceful and serene, to action packed and adrenaline rushing……this is what you will experience when your line goes down and everyone yells, “FISH ON!”. Starting them off right by giving my buddies kid an experience of driving the boat after a day of Sockeye salmon fishing on the Kenai river, under close supervision of course.
Fishing for sockeye salmon in the Kenai river can be a lot of fun. Today’s group found a limit of fish with ease. Once you are dialed in on the techniques and get the feel for fishing for sockeye salmon they can be easy to catch. These fish are hard fight, very acrobatic and can flat out destroy gear. Once you have landed the fish you are allowed to keep 6 per person right now or release it depending what you want to do. This group decided to only keep what they though they could eat over the winter. Sockeye salmon are tasty anyway you decide to cook them and I promise there will be no color added to the fillet!
Chrome bright sockeye salmon are best for taking home. If you catch a fish that has been in the river to long I will recommend that you release it and try to catch a fresher fish. The best part of guided sockeye salmon fishing is being able to get to productive gravel bars and away from the mass crowds. Sockeye salmon fishing is very popular and you might have to share a gravel bar but I will do my best to keep you out of a combat fishing zone.
Sockeye salmon fishing in the afternoon can be very productive on the Kenai river. The peak season to fish for sockeye salmon is about July 12th through August 10th most years. Ocean run fish have there own schedule though and these dates can very on either or both ends by a few days. Good sockeye salmon fishing can be accessed in many areas that you can walk into but this is a very popular time of year and these areas can be very congested. This is probably the best reason for hiring Drifting on the Fly for a day trip. We will do our best to find you a productive gravel bar that is not as busy as some of the road side accessible spots. Though there still might be people around it shouldn’t be elbow to elbow.
These folks traveled to Alaska from Arkansas to try their luck out on the Kenai river for sockeye salmon and did very well.
The afternoon fishing can be as good as the morning fishing. Usually others have limited out or called it quits. This means we have a good chance at getting on a great gravel bar. Half day afternoon trips are available and the cost is 200.00 dollars plus tax for a half day fishing trip.

Kenai river sockeye salmon and rainbow trout fishing trips with Drifting on the Fly’s guide service.
Kenai river sockeye salmon and rainbow trout fishing combination trips can be a long day on the water but provide a great experience of the river. Our full day trips are advertised at 8 hours but many days go on a little longer.
I met up with one of my Alaska resident fishing groups early to get our waders on and gear ready this morning. The kids eager to get out on the river but the early mornings make them move a little slower.
Starting out on the lower Kenai river with some sockeye salmon fishing. The kids had a great time and caught a few salmon but really wanted to go after a big Kenai river rainbow trout. Early in the sockeye salmon run I target fish directly behind cleaning stations and were carcasses tend to pile up. This proved to be where most of the rainbow trout were today! Nothing big but that doesn’t matter when you are catching fish.
Good job guys and I’m looking forward to next weekend.
Combination trips are great for an all around experience we usually break the trip into two half days, fishing for salmon in the morning and trout in the afternoon.
Thanks for keeping up with us and remember to check us out at www.driftingonthefly.com and on Facebook
Another beautiful day fishing for sockeye salmon on the Kenai river, If the days continue to be this nice I’ll think I’m some where else other than Alaska. The weather has been great and so has the kenai river Salmon fishing! We had our fish in less than an hour yesterday and then moved on to rainbow trout fishing. After we are finished salmon fishing I will clean your fish for you on the river. By doing this on the river we offer food back into the system for other species and that way I know you get the most out of your harvest. The rainbow trout and dolly Varden fishing was a little slower but with some work we found a concentration of fish and managed to pull the day of successful.
With so many sockeye in the river I believe that it Freaks the rainbow trout out for a few days. Now there are enough carcasses in the river that the trout should start to really key in on them! In a few days though a fresh flesh fly will do very well just down stream of the sockeye salmon anglers. If there is time after a Kenai river salmon trip we are happy to make a few drifts for you to try and catch some rainbow trout if you would like.

Getting set up and read to fish for Kenai river sockeye salmon this morning! The boat parking on this gravel bar allows us to have our gear close by and access the boat for a break when needed. Current and depth play a real factor when choosing a spot to fish for kenai river sockeye salmon. Adjust your weight so that your fly is barely off the bottom. A 4-6 foot leader is very important as well, any shorter and you will not be covering the water that is needed. Sockeye salmon have to be hooked in the mouth so any fish that is not has to be released immediately. It is hard work some days and a foul hooked fish is tempting but understand that it is not worth it.
The Kenai river sockeye salmon (reds) run is getting better every day. The last two days in a row 12,000 fish have entered the river for a total of over 70,000 fish.
Book your kenai river sockeye salmon trip with Drifting on the Fly by calling or contacting us here on the site. If we do not answer leave a message and we will get back to you as soon as we get off the water.

Today I fished for Kenai river sockeye salmon again, during the fast paced Alaska fishing season there are weeks when I don’t fish the same place twice. As I found yesterday the fish were in lower numbers but passing through in more consistent waves in the morning. By mid day it almost seemed to be over. The group I fished today did manage to get all their fish. I would say in 5 more days they will be easier to come by even though there are plenty of fish in the river to catch. We will see in the morning If the fish cooperate again! Reds aren’t the same as a big king salmon but they do make for an exciting day of fishing on the Kenai river and make an excellent dinner.
The king salmon report is slow but when and if numbers improve we will be chasing them as well soon.
Tight lines and if you are in the area and would like to try your luck on a gravel bar this season for some hard fighting sockeye salmon check out our sight at www.driftingonthefly.com for more information on how to line up your fishing trip.
kenai river fishing for rainbow trout was slower today but we did manage to hook a few and land a few! I found that swinging leeches with a sinking tip line got the most bites. The Kenai river is big and the fish are spread out more now. I found fish in the eddies and in the normal spots but no big concentration were found. Big bunny leeches and smaller flesh fly patterns seemed to be the ticket on a dead drift. Some days its a dead drift and some days it is on the swing. I will put an indicator on with a trusted pattern and run a dead drift and swing it at the end of the drift. If I see that most of my takes are on the swing I will take the indicator off and take more of a down and across approach.
This unlucky sockeye salmon decided to take a leech on the swing. After a long winter a fresh salmon on the BBQ is always looked forward too. A 10 to 12 pound fish on a 7 weight fly rod put up a great battle.
