Kenai River Rainbow Trout Fishing In October

Kenai River Rainbow Trout Fishing in October is a great time to get out and experience the river. The crowds are starting to dwindle and the water levels usually are doing the same.  The weather can get cold and snow will be in the forecast more than likely but the fish will be there. Being new to fly fishing, Sam handled this fish like a pro.  Great Job! When the tempuratures drop we will not remove the fish from the water so there isn’t as high of a mortality rate.  Please respect this and we will do our best to get a quality picture of you catch.  If we plan on harvesting a silver salmon this rule doesn’t apply! Grayling are not a common fish in the Kenai river but we do catch one every once in a while.  Today was the exception, we caught one 8″ arctic grayling today.  Grayling will move into the kenai river later in the season to find food before the long winter sets in. October fishing on the kenai river can be very productive.  Silver salmon are spawning now and the Rainbow trout move right behind them to feed.  If you would like a late season guide trip on the kenai river contact us anytime. SILVER SALMON FISHING ON THE KENAI RIVER

driftingonthefly.com

Silver Salmon fishing on the kenai river has been excellent this week.  The best proven fly has been a purple leach pattern for the water conditions that we have been fishing.   You might have to weed through a couple fish to put a chrome one in the boat.  This late in the season the fish that entered the system earlier are starting to stage to spawn.  When a silver salmon is hooked up it will take big runs and cartwheeling jumps it is all good.  I’ve found that a slightly upstream cast and a big mend with a very slow retrieve has got the most bites. Silver salmon can be aggressive but I find a slower presentation out fishes a fast sporadic presentation most days.   Anywhere on the Kenai river with a slow pocket should be holding silver salmon.

We will continue to take booking for silver salmon fishing on the kenai river until the end of October.  Weather conditions are sometimes colder and daylight hours are not as long but the fishing can be excellent in October for both silvers and rainbow trout! Contact us here for a silver salmon guide trip on the kenai river.

Silver Salmon Fly Fishing

copy-of-600.jpg

When I think of Salmon on the fly rod I think Silver Salmon fly fishing.  The fishing typically gets good by mid to late July on some of our fly out fishing and mid Aug. to the end of Oct. on the Kenai peninsula and the kenai river.  In the right conditions silver salmon will take the fly very aggressively.  I’ve even had many opportunities to take these fish on top water.  Bunny flies, articulated flies, marabou flies, leaches, spoon flies, etc. are just a few patterns that will work well for these fish.  I find a slow strip in slow water or swinging your flies in faster water draw the most strikes.  I prefer a strip set or scissor strike to set the hook.  This way if you miss the fish you don’t pull the streamer out of the strike zone and often the fish will come back to give you a second chance.  If you are fishing from a boat make sure you fish the fly all the way back to the boat.  I see fish chasing all the way to the boat for a last chance strike. If you are interested in matching your skills with these fish make sure you contact me at www.driftingonthefly.com and we’ll get you lined up on a alaska fishing guide tip. FLY FISHING ON THE KENAI PENINSULA

Winter fly fishing on the kenai peninsula, Alaska   The Kenai Peninsula continues to produce both steelhead and rainbow trout in the right stream. The steelhead fishing continue to arrive daily in those streams that support steelhead and since these streams have not iced over yet, fishing has been  productive. Streamers and eggs continue to produce with mixed results from day to day. Don’t hesitate to change patterns and technique fairly often if things don’t seem to be working. When you find low clear water be careful about spooking fish, once you spook them often they will just move into deeper water and hold in plain sight, fishing to a spooked fish or two is a waste of time. Move on! The Kenai River continues to provide great rainbow fishing. The Silver Salmon are pretty much done and the season ends today. Beads continue to produce the best in the rainbow department. I am booking now for the upcoming fly fishing season, if you are interested give me a call 907-382-6808 or an email (scott@driftingonthefly.com) Tight Lines, Scott Drifting On The Fly, LLC

RICH KETTERMAN KING SALMON The King salmon bite has been slower over the past couple of days though we are catching a few, a couple of them have been very nice fish over 40 pounds.  We are focusing on the Kasilof river now since the Kenai River is getting so much preasure.  From reports that I have gotten the Kasilof river is fishing better right now anyways.  To give anglers the best opportunity we have been spending most of our time in the tidal water looking for fresh fish that are pushing in.  I look for the King Salmon to push in the river in good numbers any tide now.  The Kenai river Rainbow trout fishing has been good and keeps on improving the closer we get to the King salmon spawn.  By the middle of August the bite should be off the hook.   We are taking bookings for the rainbow trout and silver salmon fishing this fall.
