Kenai Peninsula Fishing Guides

dsc_0815   Kenai peninsula fishing guides are on the river fishing hard every day.  We know the water and know the fish that we are pursuing.  When visiting the Kenai peninsula you can’t go wrong hiring a guide for a day or two to get some valuable information on local knowledge of the water you would like to fish.  I guide for a living and have for a long time now but whenever I go someplace new to fish I hire a guide for the first day or two to get some insight on what is going on.  There is nothing wrong with this and it will make you more successful on your trip.  Where ever you come from it is going to take quit a bit of traveling to get the Kenai Peninsula to go fishing.  A couple of planes and a few hours in a rental car if you are coming from out-of-state and possibly if you are traveling from in the state too!  Alaska is a huge state and there are many fishing opportunities so be prepared to make the best of the time invested in getting here. Fishing Trips on the kenai Peninsula that you may be interested in are rainbow trout, arctic grayling, king salmon, silver salmon, sockeye salmon, and or steelhead.  Timing your vacation for the species that most interests you is very important.  Give us a call today and we will set you up with a kenai peninsula fishing guides.

Alaska fishing season

20121030-153841.jpg The Alaska fishing season is over for us here at Drifting on the Fly now.  The cool 5 am mornings are now replaced with well below freezing temps, wind and snow now for months ahead. My 2012 season is over here in Alaska and I look forward to next years Alaska fishing season already. I While getting my gear in order for the long winter ahead I was able to slip out and enjoy the kenai river for a couple afternoons. The fishing was incredible and I hated to leave it. Here are a couple pictures from my last day on the Kenai river fly fishing for rainbow trout and steelhead my last few days of the 2012 season. 20121102-151837.jpg I caught this steelhead on the Anchor river using a six weight z axis switch rod 20121102-151854.jpg 20121102-151910.jpg 20121102-151919.jpg Brian of Wilderness Way looks a little chilli as we motor back up stream for another drift.  We had an epic day on the river today and I look forward to getting back out there next spring.  Who knows maybe there will be a 20 Pound fish on the end of my line next time? Rainbow trout and silver salmon fishing

October has been great rainbow trout and silver salmon fishing on the Kenai river. Water levels are good and the fish are on the bite. We have picked up a lot of rainbow trout and dolly Varden on flesh flies. 20121012-225213.jpg 20121012-225226.jpg 20121012-225238.jpg Jody has caught three fish today in the high 20’s and just can’t seem to break the 30 inch mark 20121012-225252.jpg Silver salmon (cohoe) fishing on the Kenai river has been very good. We stopped for just a few minutes to cast some streamers on a grass bank and Jody was able to pick up two salmon really fast. We quickly went back to trout fishing but I think we could have picked up a few more. 20121012-225550.jpg An Alaska fishing season is very short and I always hate to see freeze up in the near future but it is that time of year. The last few trips will be biter sweet in the way of some of the best rainbow trout and silver salmon fishing of the season but they are the last few trips. I enjoy showing people the rivers I know and if you have ever wanted to fish the Kenai peninsula keep in mind that we will be right back out there next season. Give us a call anytime and we will design a trip for the upcoming fishing season. Tight lines, Scott Sager

Kenai river rainbow trout fishing

KENAI RIVER RAINBOW TROUT FISHING! Water levels are falling on the Kenai river now after this falls 100 year flood. I was able to fish many places today that I had not for the last 10 days. The fish are hungry and we were able to catch and hook many large rainbow trout. I think the next two weeks could prove to be some great Kenai River rainbow trout fishing. There are days available if you are interested in a last chance fly fishing trip on the Kenai river for the 2012 fishing season, Give us a call soon!!   20121006-221038.jpg Much of the food source right now has been washed out with the high water so we concentrated our efforts behind structure where food would be caught up.  I like to fish close to deep cut banks with sweepers that can catch caucasus and near back eddies that food can get washed into.   20121006-221052.jpg When the mighty Kenai river is flowing higher I prefer to use the power boat where it is legal.  This allows us to rework runs with ease and move around without waisting to much time getting there. 20121006-221102.jpg Jody loves Kenai river rainbow trout fishing,  he says it is his favorite fishing he has ever done. Walk and wade on the Kenai river

Walk and wade on the Kenai river can be a great way to chase trophy rainbow trout. There are many steams and lakes that are in the surrounding area as well as the kenai river to fish.  Rainbow trout and dolly Varden are staged behind spawning salmon which in places can be very close to shore.  Match the hatch and it should be fish on. When ever I walk and wade on the Kenai river I carry pepper spray or a firearm.  This is the time of year that bears are cruising the banks during daylight hours and one never knows.  Sometimes using good judgement and respecting the wildlife isn’t enough and you need to have protection.  Remember you are in Alaska. Guided day trips for walk and wade fishing trips are 275.00$ per person plus tax. I like to keep it to a maximum of 4 people per guide so that we don’t loose that personal attention that you are paying for. Give us a call or click here anytime and we will be happy to get you lined up 20120916-124855.jpg 20120916-124915.jpg 20120916-124928.jpg   20120916-124953.jpg Walk and wade on the kenai river is another great way to enjoy your Alaska fishing vacation.  These anglers were able to fool these fish into taking there presentation and never set foot in a boat.

Kenai river fly fishing

20120910-205151.jpg It was a beautiful fall day to be on the Kenai River fly fishing.  The morning started off below freezing then Quickly warmed up to almost 60 degrees. There was not to much wind and almost not a cloud in the sky. The rainbow trout fishing was good but the dolly Varden seemed to be on the bit the most today. Salmon carcasses are starting to pile up on the gravel bars and this is the time of year I wait to run some of my best flesh fly patterns.  When the Dolly varden wont seem to let the egg pattern alone switch to a flesh fly and you will see your rainbow trout catch start to go up and we did!  I don’t discriminate against Dollies but when they are aggressively feeding on eggs its hard to find a trout bite sometimes. Dolly Varden are hard runners and head shakers you can almost tell instantly the difference between them and a rainbow trout when you hook up. 20120910-205835.jpg The 2011 season is quickly coming to an end. If you are still thinking of taking a Rainbow Trout, silver salmon or steelhead fishing trip feel free to give us a call anytime at 907-382-6808 or email us Tight lines Scott Sager!

KingFisher Restaurant

After a good day of fishing the upper Kenai river fishing for rainbow trout and dolly Varden we decided to have dinner at the kingfisher restaurant.  The KingFisher restaurant is located just above the waters edge on Kenai lake, excellent food and one of the best views of any restaurant I’ve been to.  Plus I really enjoy the IPA that is on tap. 20120909-094015.jpg Leaving the kingfisher full and ready to hit the water after sleeping off a large meal. 20120909-094100.jpg Paddle boarding is getting popular on the kenai peninsula.  Although I did see a group going down the kenai river the other day and with the boat traffic I don’t know that I would recommend that or not?  Probably not! 20120909-094110.jpg While at dinner we had a table over looking Kenai Lake and this brilliant rainbow appeared.  I’ve seen this view many times but the rainbow had me gazing out over the lake like it was the first time again.  All in all I think that if you are in or passing through Cooper Landing Alaska the KingFisher Restaurant is well worth making time for.

Kenai river Alaska fly fishing

The Kenai river was running much clearer today than the last couple days. Kenai river Alaska fly fishing for rainbow trout and Dolly Varden fishing was very good all day long. I found a few concentrations of bigger fish and was able to land a few of them! 20120830-204826.jpg Jack caught so many fish today that after 8 hours he was laying down on the deck trying to run a drift. It didn’t work so well but he just couldn’t bring himself to quit! 20120830-205039.jpg Everyone caught good fish and they are already in for another week next year. 20120830-210130.jpg This Large dark rainbow trout was caught close to the shore.  I think he was taking a break from the current and hanging in some easier water. 20120830-210153.jpg 20120830-210207.jpg Dolly varden are often caught while fishing for rainbow trout on the kenai river 20120830-210218.jpg Rainbow trout fishing is all catch and release with barbless hooks. This policy is to ensure the future of these beautiful fish. If you are interested in a day out on the water with our company contanct us on our site or give us a call at 907-382-6808.
