Kenai River Trip

driftingonthefly.com

When the fishing is good on a kenai river trip there is little time for sitting around.  Here Kim and Jeff are excited about a great net job on a sockeye salmon.

A Good kenai River Trip for Sockeye Salmon should be scheduled for the middle of June and from the middle of July until the second week in August.  Fishing for Sockeye Salmon begins in June on the Kenai river and will last until mid august some years.  There are two runs of sockeye salmon on the Kenai river.  The first run which is known as the russian river run of sockeye salmon which opens on June 11th and usually peaks around the 20th of June.  The second run of sockeye salmon will start filtering in with the end of the first run and should peak around the middle of July.  The second run of fish in many recent years has brought hundreds of thousands of fish into the system.  Usually by the second week in August the fishing has passed its peak for sockeye salmon and we are moving on to rainbow trout and silver salmon fishing.

If you are in for a fun and exciting Kenai river trip lets chase some sockeye salmon.  We will get to one of my favorite gravel bars in either a drift boat or power boat and set up for a great day of fishing.  The limit of sockeye salmon per person per day is 3 unless fish and game releases an emergency order to allow more fish to be harvested.  When this happens it usually goes up to 6 per person.

Alaska kenai peninsula weather

The Alaska Kenai Peninsula weather has been ugly the last few days. I drove up to anchorage for yesterday and encountered some heavy gust of wind and bad rain on the way up and the way back. 20120919-221725.jpg This is a picture I took coming around turnagain arm this morning.  The wind had to be blowing at least 40 miles per hour here. 20120919-221740.jpg The Alaska railroad along Turnagain arm heading to the kenai peninsula   20120919-221927.jpg I Launched my boat on the Kenai River this evening and it ended up being beautiful. The wind laid down and the clouds even let a few rays of sun through. The fishing season is far from over on the Kenai peninsula. In slower parts of the system like in this picture you can find concentrations of Silver salmon.  Here I like to throw steamer patterns such as egg sucking leeches or articulated bunny flies, spinners also work well.  I find that a slow steady retrieve finds most of my bites.   If you are interested in one of the prime dates for rainbow trout, silver salmon and or steelhead give us a call anytime. KingFisher Restaurant

After a good day of fishing the upper Kenai river fishing for rainbow trout and dolly Varden we decided to have dinner at the kingfisher restaurant.  The KingFisher restaurant is located just above the waters edge on Kenai lake, excellent food and one of the best views of any restaurant I’ve been to.  Plus I really enjoy the IPA that is on tap. 20120909-094015.jpg Leaving the kingfisher full and ready to hit the water after sleeping off a large meal. 20120909-094100.jpg Paddle boarding is getting popular on the kenai peninsula.  Although I did see a group going down the kenai river the other day and with the boat traffic I don’t know that I would recommend that or not?  Probably not! 20120909-094110.jpg While at dinner we had a table over looking Kenai Lake and this brilliant rainbow appeared.  I’ve seen this view many times but the rainbow had me gazing out over the lake like it was the first time again.  All in all I think that if you are in or passing through Cooper Landing Alaska the KingFisher Restaurant is well worth making time for.

dolly Varden fishing on the Kenai river

20120908-090016.jpg Dolly varden fishing on the kenai river can be excellent.  Along with the rainbow trout fishing you will find that these hard fighting fish can really be a good variety to your day. The guys taking time for family photos on the Kenai river and soaking in the experience. The high bank I am on is a great place to eat lunch and view the river and mountain range behind skilak lake. 20120908-090327.jpg The rainbow trout and Dolly Varden fishing was really good in the morning and tapered off a little by the afternoon. We still managed to find pockets of fish that were willing to feed. After I dropped my guest off I picked up a buddy and my dog at the dock and hung out on the river for another couple hours. It makes for a long day but winter is coming fast and this is the time of year I love the most. 20120908-090908.jpg If you are interested in a day on the water this year I still have days available for the in September and october this year.               20120906-192141.jpg 20120906-192209.jpg 20120906-192218.jpg A few eagles feeding along the Kenai river, we also saw a brown bear fishing along the river as well. I was able to maneuver the boat close enough for my guest to get some great photos. Wildlife along the Kenai river is abundant and you never know what you might see on a day trip with us. 20120906-192414.jpg 20120906-192426.jpg This young Alaska brown bear was really trying hard to catch a fish and finally did.  I think he will winter just fine. 20120906-192439.jpg Kenai river Rainbow trout fishing was good today again and I hope it continues through the whole fall. Our fish have enough of a food source to hold them over for a long time this year with the pink salmon in the river. Pink salmon show up on the kenai river on even numbered years. 20120906-192758.jpg 20120906-192904.jpg The guys caught lots of fish today and managed to hang a very large fish but didn’t land it.  The opportunity to catch a world class rainbow trout is very high on the kenai river with fish caught daily 24-28 inches and an occasional 30 inch plus fish. Kenai river rainbow trout

Kenai river rainbow trout fishing continues to be off the hook.  I am noticing the change from the kenai river rainbow trout following the king salmon spawn to following the pink salmon spawn now.  Our technique will not change but our fishing locations are switched up a bit when this happens.  Keeping in tune with what is going on with the river keeps you into fish. Bent rods means happy clients and that is our main goal here at Drifting on the Fly. 20120902-120158.jpg Drift boat fishing is a great way to fish kenai river rainbow trout but when the river is big the power boats are legal it is a great option for reworking productive runs. 20120902-120217.jpg Keep a large rubber net under every fish I intend on releasing help in keeping them from ending up in the floor of the boat.   20120902-120310.jpg Taking a break from a great morning to have a little lunch. The fishing is good because these anglers refuse to eat or drink if their arms are not sore at lunch time.  I love the experience that fishing gives to people.  The camaraderie and sportsmanship that plays out almost everyday I am at work makes my job not work at all.   Tight lines Scott Sager contact us here 20120902-120418.jpg 20120902-130652.jpg

Kenai river silver salmon and rainbow trout fishing

20120828-231015.jpg This mornings kenai river silver salmon and rainbow trout fishing trip was gorgeous!! The 20 minute run up river was as scenic as Alaska is! You can expect anything from fog to rain to snow to any condition in Alaska but this morning was one to praise. It was 39 degrees at the boat launch and crystal clear! It’s trout season! 20120828-231434.jpg 20120828-231451.jpg 20120828-231520.jpg Dustin and “jeff”! decided to purchase an exclusive boat for a couple days and wanted to fish Kenai river rainbow trout and silver salmon (cohoe. We limited fast this morning and had smokes and lunch on my favorite gravel bar on the Kenai river. Every day can’t be limits of salmon but it is Alaska. 20120828-232125.jpg 20120828-232206.jpg On the way back to the boat launch this pair of eagles was worth turning the boat and taking a few pics for. 20120828-232340.jpg 20120828-232349.jpg This afternoons Kenai river rainbow trout trip was great! The Leslie group had been fishing with me for years. We headed up the Kenai river and pulled off a great half day evening trip on the Kenai river. We had 4 hours of great rainbow trout and dolly Varden fishing! They group also witnessed a sow brown bear and two cubs feeding on a gravel bar. These are the same two bears that have been out for the last two evenings. 20120828-232722.jpg 20120828-232736.jpg A good Alaska fall day today! Fall is here but fishing season had just begun. If you are interest in sharing a day on the Kenai river or a fly out to a remote stream with our company feel free to contact us anytime. Alaska rainbow trout fishing

20120827-224002.jpg Float planes often cruise the Kenai River and can land in many places.  It is quit an experience to have a float plane buzz you while you are in Alaska rainbow trout fishing. The rainbow trout have moved behind the king salmon and there are fish feeding through out the whole system right now. 20120827-224325.jpg Alaska rainbow trout fishing can be very frustrating if you do not match the hatch.  The hatch being flesh and eggs from the salmon.  When the Rainbows key in on this rich food source you will be hard pressed catching them on any other imitations. The first to spawn are the King salmon.  King salmon eggs are around 9-12 mm in size and vary in color depending on light and time that they have been in the water.   20120827-224509.jpg Often in the fall you can find bears feeding along the gravel bars.  This bear was spotted below rainbow alley on the middle kenai river.  He chased sea gulls and found an easy meal right in front of us while we fished.  I love it when guest that have never seen an Alaska brown bear have the opportunity to hang out with them on the river. Kenai river boat launch

20120825-055341.jpg The view from a kenai river boat launch this morning.  My gear is in order and the sun rise is worth sharing.  Looking up the Moose river under the sterling highway bridge at 5 am reminds me that fall is well on its way.  Clear skies and cooler temperatures will turn the landscape into autumn in days now not weeks.  We are Headed out Kenai River rainbow trout fishing and silver salmon fishing today, we will start off casting fly’s for the silver salmon and when the sun gets up higher after lunch we will search for rainbow trout. Booking a combination fishing trip with us is easy, give us a call and let us know what you would like to do on your next fishing trip and we will hook you up.  I will meet you at one of the kenai river boat launches and take you out for a great day on the river.
