Kasilof River Salmon Fishing Guide

Today’s report from your Kasilof river salmon fishing guide. Every day has shown improvement and more and more fish are hitting the river.  I believe that this coming week will be the best of the first run of King Salmon.  We’ll just have to be out there and see what happens.  Bait is still producing more fish that plugs for my boat.  With the water level coming up more and more everyday I’ve switched to a larger set of hooks and am now running a longer leader for my eggs and spin and glows.  Larger fish are starting to come into the river, we had one get off the hook today that may have reached 40-45 pounds? kasilof-king-salmon-fishing-013 kasilof-king-salmon-fishing-012 The weather has been awesome, 65-80 degrees on the river this week thus far and not a cloud in the sky!  We hope it continues? Days are long still and there is lots of fishing opportuities on the Kenai peninsula. Homer Alaska Halibut Fishing

A day in Homer Alaska halibut fishing when you are visiting the Kenai Peninsula can be very rewarding and add some weight to the fish box. My saltwater captians and I have been working together for a few years now and he has never shown a client a bad trip. Yesterday I had a chance to take my uncle Fred Sager out and even in inclement weather he still worked to get us into nice halibut. halibut-fishing-alaska A few average fish and a couple of nicer fish made for a good box of fish for my Uncle to take home a share with the family. On a trip out on the boat make sure, even if the weather is nice that you take plenty of extra cloths. Saturday could have been miserable if we were not dressed properly! saltwater-king-salmon-fishing-alaska After getting your halibut in the box if time allows Tim will try to get you into some king salmon when they are available. Nothing like a Captain will to go the extra mile for you when your on a trip of a lifetime! Thanks Tim, If your interested in adding a day on the saltwater on your next trip to kenai peninsula, Alaska. Let us know and we will be happy to line you up with one of the most experienced captains.  Also if you are interested in a Kenai or Kasilof river guide trip we will gladly hook you up there too. Shenandoah Valley fly fishing

I had a chance to get home and fly fish in the Shenandoah national park and Shenandoah valley  for a couple of days.  Shenandoah valley fly fishing involves a lot of hiking, wade fishing and or drift boat fishing.  The weather was OK and the fishing was great.  I only had a couple of opportunities to get out with the boys from www.murraysflyshop.com but when I did it was on. va-2009-009There is nothing big about the trout in Shenandoah nation park but native fish that are thousands of years old and readily taking dry flies makes this fishing as fun as any I have ever done.  The beautiful mountain streams can put the most seasoned fishers into a trance. We fished the Rapidan river in Madison county VA on this trip but there are over 50 fish able streams in the park! va-2009-017 Guide John Colman with a nice small mouth on the North Fork of the Shenandoah river.  Though the water temperature was colder than we would have liked the fish still cooperated.  We caught Small mouth bass, Large mouth bass, sunfish and fall fish. If you are interested in taking a fun, fish filled trip in the Shenandoah valley I highly recommend that you check out www.murraysflyshop.com. We are back in AK and start our season here may 16th!  King Salmon fishing should be good and if you are looking for an Alaska vacation for 2009 make sure you check us out at www.driftingonthefly.com Tight lines, Scott sager

ALASKA MOUSE PATTERNS

Alaska mouse patterns can be fished in place through out the summer. Rainbow  Trout on mouse patterns?  This is awesome!  Trout need as many calories as they can consume in the short summers of Alaska.  I’ve seen 10 inch fish take a size 4 mouse pattern, ferociously.  Try dead drifting, swinging, slow or fast strips and you will be sure to have a rainbow on a mouse pattern before long.

mouse-pattern

Tying this fly weedless is also a good idea.  You can then get your mouse into the brush and retrieve it out without worrying as much about loosing it. trout on a mouse I watched my good friend Jeff Murray (www.murraysflyshop.com) raise at least 15 fish on this mouse pattern in the first half hour of this float.  This fish was caught and released in the fall but you can be sure that it is just as productive in the spring.  Note that not all rivers will produce trout on mouse patterns but most rivers in Alaska will with the right conditions. I hope to hear stories of you catching rainbow trout on mouse patterns too! It is always fun to raise fish on dry flies and even more fun to fish a dry that you will not have any problems following. give us a call anytime to line up your next Alaska kenai river guide trip. Have fun tying, Scott Sager www.driftingonthefly.com

KENAI RIVER DRY FLY FISHING

THERE CAN BE SOME VERY GOOD KENAI RIVER DRY FLY FISHING.  June is a great month to be in the middle of some great caddis hatches in Alaska.  Smaller rivers and lakes on the Kenai peninsula have been the most productive when I am look for Rainbow trout on dry flies.  Also look at the side channels of the Kenai river, there are some  great place to find some rainbow trout eager to take a dry fly. Once the salmon show up in good numbers you can fish a dry fly all day long and never have a trout look up.  When you do find fish looking up make sure you have a few caddis patterns to fall back on. elk-hair-caddis-001 I’m a huge fan of peacock hurl, I mix it into most of my favorite patterns. elk-hair-caddis-1 Brown or olive caddis patterns in a size 12 is a go to for us in June. Have a great time tying and we’ll catch you next time, give us a call to book your next Alaska Kenai river guide trip and if the timing is right we will dry fly fish the Kenai river for rainbow trout! FLY FISHING RAINBOW TROUT ON THE KENAI RIVER

kenai river rainbow troutFly Fishing rainbow trout on the Kenai river can be a great guided trip.  We offer many trips on the Kenai but specialize in finding bit trout on the fly.  Fish like these aren’t landed everyday but are hooked often.  Every once in a while a fish cooperates and an angler does everything right and we are able to put a big fish in the net.

King Salmon are starting to really starting to drop their eggs now and trout fishing the kenai river is heating up.   The Rainbow trout are moving around and finding dinner at the the hottest spawning ground these days. The river should be full of eggs within the next week..!!! Think of any other trout fishing you know and match the hatch except with beads and flesh flies instead of may flies and stone flies.  Just like any fishing pay attention to what’s happening in the stream and you’ll have a more productive day on the water.

Guide trips are available and Feel free to contact me if you have any questions about our kenai River guide operation or what is going on with the Kenai River.

Thanks and tight lines,
