Rainbow trout and silver salmon fishing

October has been great rainbow trout and silver salmon fishing on the Kenai river. Water levels are good and the fish are on the bite. We have picked up a lot of rainbow trout and dolly Varden on flesh flies. 20121012-225213.jpg 20121012-225226.jpg 20121012-225238.jpg Jody has caught three fish today in the high 20’s and just can’t seem to break the 30 inch mark 20121012-225252.jpg Silver salmon (cohoe) fishing on the Kenai river has been very good. We stopped for just a few minutes to cast some streamers on a grass bank and Jody was able to pick up two salmon really fast. We quickly went back to trout fishing but I think we could have picked up a few more. 20121012-225550.jpg An Alaska fishing season is very short and I always hate to see freeze up in the near future but it is that time of year. The last few trips will be biter sweet in the way of some of the best rainbow trout and silver salmon fishing of the season but they are the last few trips. I enjoy showing people the rivers I know and if you have ever wanted to fish the Kenai peninsula keep in mind that we will be right back out there next season. Give us a call anytime and we will design a trip for the upcoming fishing season. Tight lines, Scott Sager

Kenai river rainbow trout fishing

KENAI RIVER RAINBOW TROUT FISHING! Water levels are falling on the Kenai river now after this falls 100 year flood. I was able to fish many places today that I had not for the last 10 days. The fish are hungry and we were able to catch and hook many large rainbow trout. I think the next two weeks could prove to be some great Kenai River rainbow trout fishing. There are days available if you are interested in a last chance fly fishing trip on the Kenai river for the 2012 fishing season, Give us a call soon!!   20121006-221038.jpg Much of the food source right now has been washed out with the high water so we concentrated our efforts behind structure where food would be caught up.  I like to fish close to deep cut banks with sweepers that can catch caucasus and near back eddies that food can get washed into.   20121006-221052.jpg When the mighty Kenai river is flowing higher I prefer to use the power boat where it is legal.  This allows us to rework runs with ease and move around without waisting to much time getting there. 20121006-221102.jpg Jody loves Kenai river rainbow trout fishing,  he says it is his favorite fishing he has ever done. Walk and wade on the Kenai river

Walk and wade on the Kenai river can be a great way to chase trophy rainbow trout. There are many steams and lakes that are in the surrounding area as well as the kenai river to fish.  Rainbow trout and dolly Varden are staged behind spawning salmon which in places can be very close to shore.  Match the hatch and it should be fish on. When ever I walk and wade on the Kenai river I carry pepper spray or a firearm.  This is the time of year that bears are cruising the banks during daylight hours and one never knows.  Sometimes using good judgement and respecting the wildlife isn’t enough and you need to have protection.  Remember you are in Alaska. Guided day trips for walk and wade fishing trips are 275.00$ per person plus tax. I like to keep it to a maximum of 4 people per guide so that we don’t loose that personal attention that you are paying for. Give us a call or click here anytime and we will be happy to get you lined up 20120916-124855.jpg 20120916-124915.jpg 20120916-124928.jpg   20120916-124953.jpg Walk and wade on the kenai river is another great way to enjoy your Alaska fishing vacation.  These anglers were able to fool these fish into taking there presentation and never set foot in a boat.

Kenai river fly fishing

20120910-205151.jpg It was a beautiful fall day to be on the Kenai River fly fishing.  The morning started off below freezing then Quickly warmed up to almost 60 degrees. There was not to much wind and almost not a cloud in the sky. The rainbow trout fishing was good but the dolly Varden seemed to be on the bit the most today. Salmon carcasses are starting to pile up on the gravel bars and this is the time of year I wait to run some of my best flesh fly patterns.  When the Dolly varden wont seem to let the egg pattern alone switch to a flesh fly and you will see your rainbow trout catch start to go up and we did!  I don’t discriminate against Dollies but when they are aggressively feeding on eggs its hard to find a trout bite sometimes. Dolly Varden are hard runners and head shakers you can almost tell instantly the difference between them and a rainbow trout when you hook up. 20120910-205835.jpg The 2011 season is quickly coming to an end. Kenai River Rainbow Trout Fishing

Kenai river Rainbow trout fishing today was great but the weather was not so good. Fighting the wind has me all over the place and of course keeping the boat on the right drift is always tricky in the wind..  The group I have had for the last two days chose to work with spinning rods instead of fly rods. They had great success and really enjoyed the days on the water. 20120820-220929.jpg 20120820-221336.jpg 20120820-221402.jpg No matter the style of equipment you choose to use, keeping a good steady pressure is key to landing your catch. 20120820-221418.jpg A solid 24 inch kenai river rainbow trout caught today. 20120820-221540.jpg I look for the rainbow trout fishing to be great all the way until freeze up this year. If you are interested in a day on the water this season or would like to talk about a future trip give us a call at 907-382-6808 or check our website out at drifting on the fly! Kenai river trout fishing

Kenai river Trout fishing was good again today. We didn’t land any huge fish but we did catch a lot. The dolly Varden and rainbow trout fishing should do nothing but get better every day. 20120817-165721.jpg I liked this shirt one of the guest was wearing today. “the whole trout and nothing but the trout so help me cod” ! The Middle Kenai river trout fishing is very good right now and should continue to be good for the rest of the season.  Most seasons The rainbow trout fishing is consistent from the middle of August until freeze up.  There are days that we have to work for fish like anywhere but The Kenai river trout fishing is as good as it gets most of the time.  It always seems to amaze me even though I fish it year in and year out.  Give us a call and we will get you lined up on the kenai river trout fishing during a prime date.  Book early to make sure you get the date that best fits your trip to Alaska’s Kenai peninsula.  Contact us here on the site or by phone. Life in sterling alaska

Life in sterling Alaska along the kenai river is very laid back. After a long 17 hour day fishing for sockeye salmon on the kenai river I was looking forward to hanging with the neighbors by the camp fire. Daylight is almost still around the clock so you can defiantly get a lot done in a day if you’re motivated enough to. Often I’m asked how you even sleep with so much daylight and I answer: ” you have to go hard enough that it doesn’t matter how light it is outside!” Enjoy your vacations here and please be safe.
