Lower Kenai river silver salmon fishing

Lower Kenai river silver salmon fishing has it’s rewards. The tides are not bringing a ton of fish in right now but we are putting a few in the boat. I look for fishing to improve any day for the second run of cohoe!  I enjoy fishing the lower Kenai river for silver salmon and this is where you will have the best opportunity to find the freshest fish.  Here we usually back troll quick fish or cured row and when the tide turns we will bounce lead off the bottom with a small spin and glow and eggs.  We call this back bouncing and it is a very effective way to entice cohoe into biting although I have seen flies out fish bait in this section quit a few times.  Hooking a fish close to the boat while back bouncing will be as much of an adrenaline rush as landing it!  Many times when you are bouncing eggs you will only be fishing in 3 feet of water.  Sitting on the lower kenai river silver salmon fishing is peaceful and generally there are not as many people out as there is during king salmon season.     The silver salmon of the day weighed in on the boga grip at 15 pounds. This is a very good silver salmon Tight lines Scott Sager Drifting on the fly 20120912-143638.jpg

Kenai river fly fishing

20120910-205151.jpg It was a beautiful fall day to be on the Kenai River fly fishing.  The morning started off below freezing then Quickly warmed up to almost 60 degrees. There was not to much wind and almost not a cloud in the sky. The rainbow trout fishing was good but the dolly Varden seemed to be on the bit the most today. Salmon carcasses are starting to pile up on the gravel bars and this is the time of year I wait to run some of my best flesh fly patterns.  When the Dolly varden wont seem to let the egg pattern alone switch to a flesh fly and you will see your rainbow trout catch start to go up and we did!  I don’t discriminate against Dollies but when they are aggressively feeding on eggs its hard to find a trout bite sometimes. Dolly Varden are hard runners and head shakers you can almost tell instantly the difference between them and a rainbow trout when you hook up. 20120910-205835.jpg The 2011 season is quickly coming to an end. Kenai River Rainbow Trout Fishing

Kenai river Rainbow trout fishing today was great but the weather was not so good. Fighting the wind has me all over the place and of course keeping the boat on the right drift is always tricky in the wind..  The group I have had for the last two days chose to work with spinning rods instead of fly rods. They had great success and really enjoyed the days on the water. 20120820-220929.jpg 20120820-221336.jpg 20120820-221402.jpg No matter the style of equipment you choose to use, keeping a good steady pressure is key to landing your catch. 20120820-221418.jpg A solid 24 inch kenai river rainbow trout caught today. 20120820-221540.jpg I look for the rainbow trout fishing to be great all the way until freeze up this year. If you are interested in a day on the water this season or would like to talk about a future trip give us a call at 907-382-6808 or check our website out at drifting on the fly! Large groups

20120730-120536.jpg Our company is happy to handle large groups.  Our guides are willing to work together and keep the group on the same gravel bar if at all possible.  If we are boat fishing the boats will hang together in the runs so that camaraderie is enjoyed by everyone.  In just a few hours on a evening half day sockeye salmon trip this group of anglers did very well. We don’t often offer half day trips but we will provide them if requested.  Salmon fishing is at its peak right now and it should hold up for another couple of weeks. They ended up with a large stringer and had a great experience.  Large groups are welcome on the kenai river. We are able to handle groups of 2-20 anglers per day, we can accommodate up to 4 anglers per boat. Fishing gear, hot coffee, water, and snacks are provided with your trip.  You will need a fishing license, a packed lunch, and rain gear.  We can provide rain gear and waders if requested. Booking a fishing trip with us is very easy.  Give us a call or contact us here for more details Tight lines, Scott Sager Www.driftingonthefly.com

Life in sterling alaska

Life in sterling Alaska along the kenai river is very laid back. After a long 17 hour day fishing for sockeye salmon on the kenai river I was looking forward to hanging with the neighbors by the camp fire. Daylight is almost still around the clock so you can defiantly get a lot done in a day if you’re motivated enough to. Often I’m asked how you even sleep with so much daylight and I answer: ” you have to go hard enough that it doesn’t matter how light it is outside!” Enjoy your vacations here and please be safe. If you’re interested in spending a day on the Kenai chasing salmon or rainbow trout give us a call at 907-382-6808 or check us out on the web at www.driftingonthefly.com 20120728-214539.jpg 20120728-214629.jpg 20120728-214900.jpg

Kenai river sockeye salmon

Fishing for Kenai River Sockeye salmon this morning and watched a beautiful sunrise up the river!  Along with many other reasons the scenery on the Kenai river makes my job great.  Gravel bars to fish off of are hard to come by this season so we are trying our best to be on scene as early as possible or later on in the day. The fish seem to be pushing best in the early morning as well the last few days.  Although the afternoon fishing hasn’t been bad because the crowds have dwindled and the numbers of fish are so good right now you can’t help but to hook lots of them.   20120726-214432.jpg Kenai river sockeye Salmon fishing is excellent right now and if you are in need of a guide service give us a call right away. We offer both full day and half day guided sockeye salmon fishing trips.  I also have both power boat and drift boats to fish out of.  For sockeye salmon fishing on the Kenai river I prefer the use of the power boat though.  This allows us to be more mobile in search of a less crowded and productive gravel bar.   If you are interested in beating the crowds and fishing on one of my most productive spots,  give us a call at 907-382-6808 or check us out online at www.driftingonthefly.com

Kenai river sockeye salmon and rainbow trout fishing

Kenai river sockeye salmon and rainbow trout fishing trips with Drifting on the Fly’s guide service. Kenai river sockeye salmon and rainbow trout fishing combination trips can be a long day on the water but provide a great experience of the river. Our full day trips are advertised at 8 hours but many days go on a little longer. I met up with one of my Alaska resident fishing groups early to get our waders on and gear ready this morning. The kids eager to get out on the river but the early mornings make them move a little slower. 20120724-203028.jpg Starting out on the lower Kenai river with some sockeye salmon fishing.  The kids had a great time and caught a few salmon but really wanted to go after a big Kenai river rainbow trout. Early in the sockeye salmon run I target fish directly behind cleaning stations and were carcasses tend to pile up. This proved to be where most of the rainbow trout were today! Nothing big but that doesn’t matter when you are catching fish. Good job guys and I’m looking forward to next weekend. 20120724-203906.jpg 20120724-203924.jpg 20120724-203936.jpg Combination trips are great for an all around experience we usually break the trip into two half days, fishing for salmon in the morning and trout in the afternoon. Thanks for keeping up with us and remember to check us out at www.driftingonthefly.com and on Facebook

Kenai river sockeye salmon fishing

After a solid two weeks of Kenai river sockeye salmon fishing, we’ve done well about every day. I have notice that the for the amount of reds that fish and game clams that are in the Kenai river the fishing hasn’t beenis as epic as it should be. It’s not bad but I am wondering were these huge numbers are? Yesterday six of us fished for 8.5 hours and managed to get our limit of 18 sockeye salmon. The fishing was consistent and we probably hooked 30 more fish or so and released some fowl hooked fish too. 20120720-075343.jpg July weather couldn’t be better here on the Kenai Peninsula and fresh fish are everywhere.  Hiring a guide will help you get to more productive gravel bars and allow you to get a little space in between other groups of fisherman as well.  Once you are dialed in on the techniques you will be able to hook sockeye salmon during the peak of the run with ease. If you are looking for a day of Kenai River sockeye salmon fishing contact us through our site or give us a call.  We are happy to get you lined up and it is our mission to provide you with a quality experience.
