Kenai River Trip

When the fishing is good on a kenai river trip there is little time for sitting around. Here Kim and Jeff are excited about a great net job on a sockeye salmon.

A Good kenai River Trip for Sockeye Salmon should be scheduled for the middle of June and from the middle of July until the second week in August. Fishing for Sockeye Salmon begins in June on the Kenai river and will last until mid august some years. There are two runs of sockeye salmon on the Kenai river. The first run which is known as the russian river run of sockeye salmon which opens on June 11th and usually peaks around the 20th of June. The second run of sockeye salmon will start filtering in with the end of the first run and should peak around the middle of July. The second run of fish in many recent years has brought hundreds of thousands of fish into the system. Usually by the second week in August the fishing has passed its peak for sockeye salmon and we are moving on to rainbow trout and silver salmon fishing.

If you are in for a fun and exciting Kenai river trip lets chase some sockeye salmon. We will get to one of my favorite gravel bars in either a drift boat or power boat and set up for a great day of fishing. The limit of sockeye salmon per person per day is 3 unless fish and game releases an emergency order to allow more fish to be harvested. When this happens it usually goes up to 6 per person.

KENAI RIVER

The KENAI RIVER is a complex and dynamic system, providing excellent habitat for fisheries. This excellent habitat helps produce lots of salmon, trout, and more. All five species of Pacific salmon return to the Kenai River every year, including Chinook (king salmon), coho (silver salmon), chum, pink, and sockeye salmon. Though the pink salmon only return in big numbers on even number years and there isn’t very many chum salmon that enter the Kenai River. Other fish species in the Kenai river drainage include rainbow trout, Dolly Varden, and arctic grayling. All of these species can be targeted in a guided fishing trip on the Kenai River or Kenai peninsula. Imagine floating down glacial blue waters, surrounded by snow capped mountains, forested lands, and possible wildlife around every bend of the river, all while waiting for the tremendous ‘take down’ on your rod by any one of the five salmon or other fish species. Walk and wade on the Kenai river can be a great way to chase trophy rainbow trout. There are many steams and lakes that are in the surrounding area as well as the kenai river to fish. Rainbow trout and dolly Varden are staged behind spawning salmon which in places can be very close to shore. Match the hatch and it should be fish on. When ever I walk and wade on the Kenai river I carry pepper spray or a firearm. This is the time of year that bears are cruising the banks during daylight hours and one never knows. Sometimes using good judgement and respecting the wildlife isn’t enough and you need to have protection. Remember you are in Alaska. Kenai river fly fishing

It was a beautiful fall day to be on the Kenai River fly fishing. The morning started off below freezing then Quickly warmed up to almost 60 degrees. There was not to much wind and almost not a cloud in the sky. The rainbow trout fishing was good but the dolly Varden seemed to be on the bit the most today. Salmon carcasses are starting to pile up on the gravel bars and this is the time of year I wait to run some of my best flesh fly patterns. When the Dolly varden wont seem to let the egg pattern alone switch to a flesh fly and you will see your rainbow trout catch start to go up and we did! I don’t discriminate against Dollies but when they are aggressively feeding on eggs its hard to find a trout bite sometimes. Dolly Varden are hard runners and head shakers you can almost tell instantly the difference between them and a rainbow trout when you hook up.

Kenai river Alaska fly fishing

The Kenai river was running much clearer today than the last couple days. Kenai river Alaska fly fishing for rainbow trout and Dolly Varden fishing was very good all day long. I found a few concentrations of bigger fish and was able to land a few of them!

Jack caught so many fish today that after 8 hours he was laying down on the deck trying to run a drift. It didn’t work so well but he just couldn’t bring himself to quit!

Everyone caught good fish and they are already in for another week next year.

This Large dark rainbow trout was caught close to the shore. I think he was taking a break from the current and hanging in some easier water.

Rainbow Trout Season

Today is the Rainbow Trout season opener on the Kenai River, June 11th. Get out your smolt and flesh fly patterns and enjoy some potentially great rainbow trout fishing. This is a great time of year to pursue trout, they are hungry and willing to take traditional flies, which is always a lot of fun. The mouth of the Kenai River from Skilak lake five miles down stream is closed to all motorized vessels until June 15th! This is set into place because of the trumpeter swans that are nesting in the area. WHEN TO COME DOLLY VARDEN FISHING ON THE KENAI RIVER. Alaska Dolly Varden on a fly rod! What an experience – Guided Alaska Dolly Varden Fly Fishing on the Kenai River or one of the many surrounding streams. Drift Boat or wade fishing trips can both be quite productive for Dolly Varden. June starts the Dolly Varden season on many of the streams we regularly guide including the Kenai River. We typically start the season fishing standard streamer patterns such as muddlers, sculpins, leech patterns, and flesh flies. As the Salmon increase in numbers the Dolly’s tend to move into the Salmon spawning grounds. Here they fatten up on salmon flesh and eggs. Targeting Dolly’s involves locating these spawning areas and matching what the Dolly’s are feeding on; fresh eggs, old eggs, flesh… any of which will work from day to day; we call it Match-the-Hatch – Alaska Style. LOWER SKILAK LAKE BOAT LAUNCH

Directions to the lower skilak lake boat launch View DIRECTIONS TO LOWER SKILAK LAKE BOAT LAUNCH in a larger map We launch here mainly for drift boat trips on the middle section of the Kenai River. For most trips we will meet at Bing’s Landing and leave your rig there. Then travel to Lower Skilak Lake boat launch together. At the end of the day your rig will be at the take out. We mainly fish Rainbow trout, Dolly Varden, Silver Salmon, and Sockeye Salmon on the Middle river float. Here there is camping and the lower skilak lake boat launch. We launch here mainly for drift boat trips on the middle section of the Kenai River. For most trips we will meet at Bing’s Landing and leave your rig there. Then travel to Lower Skilak Lake boat launch together. From here we will cross 2 miles of skilak lake and enter the mouth of the Kenai river. This is where we will start fishing for the day. The middle Kenai river is on of my favorite floats. The opportunity to catch a giant rainbow trout or limit on silver salmon is very high at different time of the year. RAINBOW TROUT FISHING THE KENAI RIVER

Rainbow trout fishing the Kenai river is always something I look forward too, even on day 100 I still find the motivation to get gear together and make my way to the river. It is always helpful to see the river when the water is very low. At Cooper Landing the Flow was around 600 CFS and below Skilak lake it was flowing around 840 CFS. This gives me a lot of information for the following guide season on where rainbow trout might be holding. We picked up a few rainbow trout around Princess rapids on the upper Kenai River. The temperature was in the low 20’s all morning and eventually came up to were we could fish without freezing up to bad. Thanks to the Jet-boil we were able to take a break and have some hot coffee.

Not removing the fish from the water on very cold days is a great idea, plus it’s much better for your hands! I’m sure that leeches and flesh flies would have picked a few fish up but there were a lot of silver salmon spawning. We knew that we would be fighting almost dead silvers all day were we were fishing if we used streamers. Egg patterns seemed to be the ticket and we didn’t pick up many silvers at all. Both dead egg patterns and fresh egg patterns picked up a few rainbow trout and dolly varden. TIGHT LINES, SCOTT SAGER 907-382-6808

Kenai river trout fishing in the winter can be good one day and just OK the next. Inconsistent temperatures has a lot to do with this. The peak season of kenai river trout fishing is June, August, September and October. The first weekend of Dec. was beautiful on the Kenai river. We didn’t catch a ton of rainbow trout but enough to keep us motivated. Skilak lake is now starting to freeze over and wade fishing opportunities are about all that is available now. The weather was excellent today with temperatures over 30 degrees! I wasn’t out on the Kenai river but I know a few people that took full advantage and look forward to the report. Winter fishing is a great time of year to get out on the Kenai river, so pick a window of good weather and get outside! Good luck and we’ll see you out there.
