Kasilof River Salmon Fishing Guide

Today’s report from your Kasilof river salmon fishing guide. Every day has shown improvement and more and more fish are hitting the river.  I believe that this coming week will be the best of the first run of King Salmon.  We’ll just have to be out there and see what happens.  Bait is still producing more fish that plugs for my boat.  With the water level coming up more and more everyday I’ve switched to a larger set of hooks and am now running a longer leader for my eggs and spin and glows.  Larger fish are starting to come into the river, we had one get off the hook today that may have reached 40-45 pounds? kasilof-king-salmon-fishing-013 kasilof-king-salmon-fishing-012 The weather has been awesome, 65-80 degrees on the river this week thus far and not a cloud in the sky!  We hope it continues? Days are long still and there is lots of fishing opportuities on the Kenai peninsula. Homer Alaska Halibut Fishing

A day in Homer Alaska halibut fishing when you are visiting the Kenai Peninsula can be very rewarding and add some weight to the fish box. My saltwater captians and I have been working together for a few years now and he has never shown a client a bad trip. Yesterday I had a chance to take my uncle Fred Sager out and even in inclement weather he still worked to get us into nice halibut. halibut-fishing-alaska A few average fish and a couple of nicer fish made for a good box of fish for my Uncle to take home a share with the family. On a trip out on the boat make sure, even if the weather is nice that you take plenty of extra cloths. Saturday could have been miserable if we were not dressed properly! saltwater-king-salmon-fishing-alaska After getting your halibut in the box if time allows Tim will try to get you into some king salmon when they are available. Nothing like a Captain will to go the extra mile for you when your on a trip of a lifetime! Kenai peninsula fly fishing trip

anchor river, alaska When on a Kenai peninsula fly fishing trip on small rivers for King Salmon  make sure that you try to spend most of your time in a run that will concentrate fish.  These fish are moving upstream with the tide so moving around the stream can just waste time.  Getting out there ahead of high tide and hang out until the outgoing, this can be the most productive time. Good runs are popular during the peak of the season so staking out your sweet spot in advance is very important. fly fishing the anchor river, alaska The Anchor river can be a very productive fishery but for those early season king salmon you may have to put your time in.  Be patient and maybe you’ll pick up a mid May fish on the Kenai Peninsula! I have seen days where we get a good push of fish that each angler hooks multiple fish.  Once you have decided to harvest a fish you must quit fishing.  If you choose to practice catch and release you can fish as long as you would like.   For more information on a guided king salmon trip on the kenai river or surrounding water contact us here anytime. KENAI RIVER RAINBOW TROUT

When fishing if I have the opportunity to get above a hole and watch for a minute, I take full advantage.  Spotting Kenai river rainbow trout is difficult in the glacier tented water but it can be done.  Watching over a gravel bar can be the most productive.  Early in the spring rainbows on the kenai river will cruise in search of food, so look for flashes, anything that is moving, and dark objects that just don’t belong.  Polarized sun glasses really help in this situation. 09-april-steed-trip-010 We spent a few minutes watching this gravel bar, being above it gives you a real advantage in spotting fish. 09-april www.driftingonthefly.com This is a picture lower on the gravel bar, you can see how the higher you get the better the chance of spotting a fish. I have been watching fish move on and off of it for a few minutes now.  It’s time to get a line wet. Take the time on your next outing to just watch for a minute and you’ll be surprised on how many fish you start to see. FISHING THE KENAI RIVER ALASKA

Fishing the Kenai river Alaska is picking up more and more every day now! The Kasilof river is producing a few Steel head and it should be getting better with every change of the tide now. Alaska Steel HeadJody Steed with a good steel head caught this past week on a wade fishing trip on the Kasilof River. The Kenai River also produced a few rainbow trout for us on the following day.  The skies were clear, air temp was around 50 but we did have to battle the wind all day. Kenai river Rainbow This huge Rainbow trout was caught on an olive, Murray’s Helgramite, size 8.  This fly pattern can be found at www.murraysflyshop.com, it works great as a leech pattern in AK as well as for a helgramite/leech pattern for small mouth bass in Virginia.  When out this time of year make sure to keep your eyes open for ice floating down the kenai river! Kasilof River Guide

If you are looking for a good, dependable, and knowledgeable Kasilof river guide, look no further! I have spent many days through out the last 8 years studying and fishing the Kasilof river.  We will put you in the best runs that we can and give you the best opportunity to catch a fish of a lifetime.  King Salmon on the Kasilof river can be a challenge to catch but with some patients and good coaching I am confident that you will have a successful trip.

This week proved to be another good week for the Kasilof River for King Salmon fishing.  The Dewey family did some back trolling out of the drift boat on Monday with me and this fish flat out smoked us.  It hit a smaller pink cheater with a little glob of cured eggs.  The river has finally come up to normal level and we have had to start fishing with size 40 jet divers.  This kasilof river is mainly a terminal gear fishery but it is still a drift boat only river which makes for a relaxing day.

Congrats to Eric and Kelly we wish you two the best and good luck with the upcoming wedding.

thanks guys and see you next year
