Alaska Fishing Season

The Alaska fishing season is slowly getting here. Alaska’s winters can be harsh and cold but home to some of the most stunning surroundings and events. While we might be bundled up and not fishing every day, we are out enjoying our winter activities. These include the world-famous Iditarod dog mushing race, snow machining, skiing, sledding, snow shoeing, and let’s not forget ice fishing! While winter blankets our state with white snow and the northern lights brighten the dark skies, we are eagerly awaiting our summer!

The land comes alive and the waters break up, giving way to the schools of fish heading upstream. We start the summer season out with a big bang! Monstrous king salmon push their way upstream and everyone’s hope is for a king that may break the state record! If you’re looking to use your upper body strength to reel one of these giants in, this is the time to jump on the boat! King season continues on into mid summer with the season ending by the first of August.

By mid July the second run of sockeye salmon are usually in the river in big numbers. From the boat or from shore, sockeye salmon are a fun fighting fish that can really keep you moving all day! They are a great fish to catch for all ages, and a warm time of the year to fish too!

Fall starts appearing in August, bringing golden leaves and silver salmon! Silvers are the acrobatic salmon of Alaska’s waters. Once hooked, silvers provide a battle of strength, will, and quite the show!

If your lucky to visit Alaska in an even year (2014!), your rod will double its chances at getting a fish! Pink salmon reemerge into the Kenai river during even years and crowd the rivers alongside other salmon during these years.

September arrives with a chill in the air and Alaska is at its most glorious colors! The hustle and bustle of summer fishing slows down and the calm and serene fall rainbow trout fishing is well upon us. Rainbows can be caught all season long, however, the best time to catch trophy size trout is in the fall.

There are many other species of fish that are fun and plentiful to catch, such as Dolly Varden and Arctic grayling. There is always a chance to catch one of these fish, and they are great for the kids to catch too!

Happy 4th of July

Happy 4th of July from all of us here at drifting on the fly! I have taken A couple days off to visit with the family and enjoy a little of our short Alaska Summer.

This week we have had some excellent weather here on the Kenai peninsula. We have drift boat fished for trout on the opener, used the power boat in different sections of the river to chase rainbow trout and had a flight service take us into a high mountain lake for a day of grayling fishing on the fly. Kasilof river fishing continues to be good for us. Between the steelhead fishing and the king salmon fishing the days have been passing by way to fast. The kasilof river is starting to rise with runoff now and I know the steelhead fishing will not last much longer. Maybe a week if I am lucky. We will have to wait until the fall to see the acrobatic hard fighting fish again.

This morning when I got up and going I was able to see this new born moose and cow hanging out behind the neighbors house. They are so clumsy looking when they are first born.

I will not cover them all but it will give you a good start on planning and yes we will be happy to line up anything you want for you or design a package that will include the activities and attractions that you would like to do. -Fishing , the Kenai River is home of the worlds largest King Salmon caught on rod and real! Our guide service offers a variety of fishing trips on the kenai peninsula and south central Alaska! Trips for Kenai river rainbow trout, King Salmon, Silver Salmon, Sockeye Salmon, Grayling, Dolly Varden, Steelhead, fly out fishing, saltwater (halibut) trips, and much more. –white water rafting trips are a lot of fun. Booking a guided raft trip down six-mile canyon might be something that is interesting to you and I promise it will be an adrenaline packed adventure. Six-mile Creek is a run for whitewater enthusiasts desiring a difficult level in a guided whitewater trip. Dropping over 50 feet per mile as it flows out of the Chugach Mountains. Cutting its way through three separate canyons of Class IV and Class V Alaska whitewater rafting. -Take a trip on the Alaska railroad! A trip from Seward Alaska to Anchorage is about 4 hours and 126 miles. This is a great way to see the Kenai peninsula and not have to worry about traffic! -Seward Alaska: Visit the Sea life center and take a hike or tour of Exit Glacier, both of these attractions can be done in the same day. You could also take a glacier cruise out of Seward with Kenai fjords tours. Kenai River King Salmon Charter

We offer Kenai River King Salmon Charter trips with both power boat and drift boat opportunities. Depending on how you would like to pursue these big fish! Starting in early May when the Kenai River is low we will make good use of the drift boat. This allows us to fish through the rocky runs and over the shallow gravel bars. As the river rises with rain and run off we will switch over to the power boat for ease of reworking runs. Drift boat fishing is offered upon request at this time, we will spend time on the seams of large eddies and softer runs. Both boats are effective and our guide service has them ready to go at all times. Our boats are clean and we maintained like our equipment. Fly fishing opportunities are offered but this big river is geared more towards conventional spin and casting tackle. Through June this is an artificial lure fishery only unless opened to bait early by fish and game. July marks the date of the bait opener unless again changed by fish and game. These laws are emergency ordered to opening or closings by fish and game depending on how the run is going. I have seen bait open in early June before and I have seen the whole season closed to bait before. Either way we are dialed in on pursuing these rod bending hard fighting fish and will do our best to put you in the action. Guided Kenai river King salmon charter trips are 275.00$ plus tax per person. We can accommodate up to 4 people per boat and can handle larger groups if needed. Kenai Peninsula Steelhead Fishing Guide trips will give you a greater chance at success on these hard fighting fish. We have spent much of our time studying and fishing the local Kenai Peninsula steelhead fishing water. The 3 main rivers on the Kenai Peninsula that we fish for steelhead are the Kasilof river, the Anchor river, and Deep Creek. All 3 rivers have great fishing opportunities for sizable steelhead, dolly varden, king salmon and silver salmon.

Kasilof River Steelhead fishing

We will start our kenai peninsula steelhead fishing guide trips out on the Kasilof river. In early to mid April most years the Kasilof river starts to fish well for steelhead. There are good wade fishing opportunities in the start of the season and then drift boat fishing opportunities when the ice is cleared from the launch. The river is shallow at this time of year and fish can be spooky. Swinging flies, dead drifting nymphs and egg patterns and even casting and striping flies has produced steelhead on the Kasilof river. Spring steelhead opportunities will last until about throughout the first week in June. Then the majority of the fish have made their way back to the ocean and will not return until around the first of September. Fall steelhead fishing on the Kasilof river can also produce a lot of fish. Kenai Peninsula steelhead fishing guide Trips will be offered until the middle of October when colder weather usually runs us off the river. Kasilof river steelhead fishing guide trips are offered to both spin and fly anglers.

Anchor river and Deep Creek steelhead fishing

The Anchor river and Deep Creek are also located on the Kenai Peninsula and are walk and wade fishing streams only. We have explored and fished these rivers for years as well and know them by heart and timing. Steelhead usually start to show up here in late august but we don’t really start targeting steelhead until the second week in September. These streams are smaller than the Kasilof river but have produced a lot of fish. I have seen tides bring in a big push of fish and between a couple of anglers have hooked up on dozens of fish. Again swinging and nymph fishing will catch fish but egg patterns will dominate. These fish like resident rainbow trout key in on the salmon spawn and can’t resist the right size and color combination!

KENAI RIVER

The KENAI RIVER is a complex and dynamic system, providing excellent habitat for fisheries. This excellent habitat helps produce lots of salmon, trout, and more. All five species of Pacific salmon return to the Kenai River every year, including Chinook (king salmon), coho (silver salmon), chum, pink, and sockeye salmon. Though the pink salmon only return in big numbers on even number years and there isn’t very many chum salmon that enter the Kenai River. Other fish species in the Kenai river drainage include rainbow trout, Dolly Varden, and arctic grayling. All of these species can be targeted in a guided fishing trip on the Kenai River or Kenai peninsula. Imagine floating down glacial blue waters, surrounded by snow capped mountains, forested lands, and possible wildlife around every bend of the river, all while waiting for the tremendous ‘take down’ on your rod by any one of the five salmon or other fish species. Back yard moose

You never know what you are going to run into in alaska. I Watched a mature moose jump a 5′ fence in the back yard! Guess the grass (snow) was greener on this side of the fence. Glad we looked before letting the dog out. That could have been awful.
