Walk and wade on the Kenai river

Walk and wade on the Kenai river can be a great way to chase trophy rainbow trout. There are many steams and lakes that are in the surrounding area as well as the kenai river to fish. Rainbow trout and dolly Varden are staged behind spawning salmon which in places can be very close to shore. Match the hatch and it should be fish on. When ever I walk and wade on the Kenai river I carry pepper spray or a firearm. This is the time of year that bears are cruising the banks during daylight hours and one never knows. Sometimes using good judgement and respecting the wildlife isn’t enough and you need to have protection. Remember you are in Alaska. It was a beautiful fall day to be on the Kenai River fly fishing. The morning started off below freezing then Quickly warmed up to almost 60 degrees. There was not to much wind and almost not a cloud in the sky. The rainbow trout fishing was good but the dolly Varden seemed to be on the bit the most today. Salmon carcasses are starting to pile up on the gravel bars and this is the time of year I wait to run some of my best flesh fly patterns. When the Dolly varden wont seem to let the egg pattern alone switch to a flesh fly and you will see your rainbow trout catch start to go up and we did! I don’t discriminate against Dollies but when they are aggressively feeding on eggs its hard to find a trout bite sometimes. Dolly Varden are hard runners and head shakers you can almost tell instantly the difference between them and a rainbow trout when you hook up.

Kenai river rainbow trout fishing continues to be off the hook. I am noticing the change from the kenai river rainbow trout following the king salmon spawn to following the pink salmon spawn now. Our technique will not change but our fishing locations are switched up a bit when this happens. Keeping in tune with what is going on with the river keeps you into fish. Bent rods means happy clients and that is our main goal here at Drifting on the Fly.

Drift boat fishing is a great way to fish kenai river rainbow trout but when the river is big the power boats are legal it is a great option for reworking productive runs.

Keep a large rubber net under every fish I intend on releasing help in keeping them from ending up in the floor of the boat.

Taking a break from a great morning to have a little lunch. The fishing is good because these anglers refuse to eat or drink if their arms are not sore at lunch time. I love the experience that fishing gives to people. The camaraderie and sportsmanship that plays out almost everyday I am at work makes my job not work at all. The Kenai river was running much clearer today than the last couple days. Kenai river Alaska fly fishing for rainbow trout and Dolly Varden fishing was very good all day long. I found a few concentrations of bigger fish and was able to land a few of them!

Jack caught so many fish today that after 8 hours he was laying down on the deck trying to run a drift. It didn’t work so well but he just couldn’t bring himself to quit!

Everyone caught good fish and they are already in for another week next year.

This Large dark rainbow trout was caught close to the shore. I think he was taking a break from the current and hanging in some easier water.

Kenai river silver salmon and rainbow trout fishing

This mornings kenai river silver salmon and rainbow trout fishing trip was gorgeous!! The 20 minute run up river was as scenic as Alaska is! You can expect anything from fog to rain to snow to any condition in Alaska but this morning was one to praise. It was 39 degrees at the boat launch and crystal clear! It’s trout season!

Dustin and “jeff”! decided to purchase an exclusive boat for a couple days and wanted to fish Kenai river rainbow trout and silver salmon (cohoe. We limited fast this morning and had smokes and lunch on my favorite gravel bar on the Kenai river. Every day can’t be limits of salmon but it is Alaska.

On the way back to the boat launch this pair of eagles was worth turning the boat and taking a few pics for.

This afternoons Kenai river rainbow trout trip was great! The Leslie group had been fishing with me for years. We headed up the Kenai river and pulled off a great half day evening trip on the Kenai river. We had 4 hours of great rainbow trout and dolly Varden fishing! They group also witnessed a sow brown bear and two cubs feeding on a gravel bar. These are the same two bears that have been out for the last two evenings.

A good Alaska fall day today! Fall is here but fishing season had just begun. Float planes often cruise the Kenai River and can land in many places. It is quit an experience to have a float plane buzz you while you are in Alaska rainbow trout fishing. The rainbow trout have moved behind the king salmon and there are fish feeding through out the whole system right now.

Alaska rainbow trout fishing can be very frustrating if you do not match the hatch. The hatch being flesh and eggs from the salmon. When the Rainbows key in on this rich food source you will be hard pressed catching them on any other imitations. The first to spawn are the King salmon. King salmon eggs are around 9-12 mm in size and vary in color depending on light and time that they have been in the water.

Often in the fall you can find bears feeding along the gravel bars. This bear was spotted below rainbow alley on the middle kenai river. He chased sea gulls and found an easy meal right in front of us while we fished. Kenai River Rainbow Trout Fishing

Kenai river Rainbow trout fishing today was great but the weather was not so good. Fighting the wind has me all over the place and of course keeping the boat on the right drift is always tricky in the wind.. The group I have had for the last two days chose to work with spinning rods instead of fly rods. They had great success and really enjoyed the days on the water.

No matter the style of equipment you choose to use, keeping a good steady pressure is key to landing your catch.

I look for the rainbow trout fishing to be great all the way until freeze up this year. Enjoying a day on the Kenai river rainbow trout fishing. A couple friends enjoying the sun while cruising back up to the top of the run in their drift boat. In the really deep runs fishing a float rod will allow you to be on the bottom at any depth, This method of fishing is also helpful in getting your drift away from the boat in clear water.
