Just like with our fishing techniques, we strive to stay up to date on our outreach techniques as well. Happy new year

Kim and I are now home from the hospital with our daughter Katherine Mary Sager (Kate). The three of us couldn’t be happier. Mom and daughter are healthy and life is good. I hope that everyone had a great New Years this year! It’s been unseasonably warm here in south central Alaska in the last few weeks. I would usually take full advantage of the weather and chase rainbow trout as much as a could. This time of year can offer some great fishing. We are taking bookings for the 2013 fishing season here in Alaska. If you are dreaming of catching a hard fighting salmon or a rainbow trout this year on the Kenai peninsula please give us a call anytime and we will be happy to answer any questions you might have. Fly Out Fishing Trip

A fly out fishing trip in Alaska is a bit more expensive due to the cost of the flight but if you are interested in fishing around more bears than people this is sometimes the only option.  The group and I showed up just a little early this morning at the flight service for our fly out fishing trip. I like to have time to go through my gear one more time before take off And not be in a rush. Today’s weather outlook is great. It should be as good of a day as you can get for flying in the Alaska mountain. We are headed out to chase silver salmon on the fly today. The tide and timing should be excellent for being successful but no matter what the trip will be beautiful. 20120829-072323.jpg   20120829-072336.jpg 20120829-072352.jpg 20120829-072403.jpg Tim from Natron air in Soldotna Alaska has flown me out with guest many times now. He has a well maintained, clean and reliable plane.  It’s quit an experience landing on a beach in the middle of no where.  Depending on where we fly will determine if we use a wheeled plane or a plane on floats. I will report in on the trip when we get back after we get back. Tight lines Scott Sager Www.driftingonthefly.com

Kenai River Rainbow Trout Fishing

Kenai river Rainbow trout fishing today was great but the weather was not so good. Fighting the wind has me all over the place and of course keeping the boat on the right drift is always tricky in the wind..  The group I have had for the last two days chose to work with spinning rods instead of fly rods. They had great success and really enjoyed the days on the water. 20120820-220929.jpg 20120820-221336.jpg 20120820-221402.jpg No matter the style of equipment you choose to use, keeping a good steady pressure is key to landing your catch. 20120820-221418.jpg A solid 24 inch kenai river rainbow trout caught today. 20120820-221540.jpg I look for the rainbow trout fishing to be great all the way until freeze up this year. If you are interested in a day on the water this season or would like to talk about a future trip give us a call at 907-382-6808 or check our website out at drifting on the fly! Off to fish the kasilof river in the morning for silver salmon. Tight lines Scott Sager 20120823-183205.jpg Wayne is eating again,  I think he should fish more!

Kenai river boat launch

20120820-065047.jpg Rigged up and waiting at a kenai river boat launch to go rainbow trout fishing on the Kenai river this morning! Will report back tonight

Kenai river trout fishing

Kenai river Trout fishing was good again today. We didn’t land any huge fish but we did catch a lot. The dolly Varden and rainbow trout fishing should do nothing but get better every day. 20120817-165721.jpg I liked this shirt one of the guest was wearing today. “the whole trout and nothing but the trout so help me cod” ! The Middle Kenai river trout fishing is very good right now and should continue to be good for the rest of the season.  Most seasons The rainbow trout fishing is consistent from the middle of August until freeze up.  There are days that we have to work for fish like anywhere but The Kenai river trout fishing is as good as it gets most of the time.  It always seems to amaze me even though I fish it year in and year out.  Give us a call and we will get you lined up on the kenai river trout fishing during a prime date.  Book early to make sure you get the date that best fits your trip to Alaska’s Kenai peninsula.  Contact us here on the site or by phone. Kenai river king salmon

Headed up the Kenai river this morning in hopes of catching a handful of rainbow trout.   20120707-102659.jpg We are swinging black leeches today out of the boat and picking a few fish up here and there. Client and good friend Dan Goff sets the hook on the swing and line starts peeling. The fish swirled and we both new he had a very big fish on. This is probably Dan’s 20th+ trout trip on the Kenai river with me and he knows all to well how fast you can get schooled on a big fish. After just a short 3 minutes we new he had a 30-35 pound kenai river king salmon on. We cranked down the drag a little and grabbed the leader. Got a quick photo of the fish and released him immediately. What a great battle and it just goes to prove that you never know why you will latch on to when fly fishing the Kenai river. 20120707-103410.jpg 20120707-103510.jpg The Catch and Release tool I use really comes in handy when you don’t want to put a fish in the net. 20120707-103618.jpg Line screaming off of Dan’s real from a Kenai River King Salmon.

Rainbow Trout Season

Today is the Rainbow Trout season opener on the Kenai River, June 11th. Get out your smolt and flesh fly patterns and enjoy some potentially great rainbow trout fishing. This is a great time of year to pursue trout, they are hungry and willing to take traditional flies, which is always a lot of fun. The mouth of the Kenai River from Skilak lake five miles down stream is closed to all motorized vessels until June 15th! This is set into place because of the trumpeter swans that are nesting in the area. If you are interested in taking a guided fishing trip on the Kenai river, feel free to contact us anytime at www.driftingonthefly.com or at 907-382-6808.
