Fishing on the Kenai and Kasilof Rivers is an adventure in itself—but the river’s greatest surprises often show up between casts. Every trip down any of our rivers provides an opportunity to see wildlife at its best, with each bend in the water offering a chance to witness Alaska at its wildest.

It’s nearly impossible to spend time on the rivers without spotting bald eagles. They perch on treetops and branches, scan the banks for salmon, and occasionally swoop down in a dramatic display of power. Seeing one up close—wings spread wide—is something no photo fully captures.

 

During heavy salmon runs, it’s not uncommon to see brown bears working the river too. They’re usually focused on the fish, giving anglers plenty of space, but catching a glimpse from a safe distance is a bonus on our guided fishing trips. Watching a bear pluck a salmon from the river is an unforgettable part of your fishing experience.

When the fish move, so does the wildlife. On days when the river is thick with sockeye salmon or when silver salmon flash beneath the surface – the odds of seeing wildlife increase dramatically.

One of the first strong pushes of salmon has arrived on the Kenai Peninsula, and guests are already filling limits — a welcome early season surge.

Bright fish, steady action, and early morning hookups are signaling what looks to be a promising run. For this young man, this is the moment that creates a new memory. An early wave of fish provides epic fishing, great opportunities for our guests, and that unmistakable energy on the river — boats sliding into gravel bars in the early morning hours, coffee in hand, and rods bending with lines zipping before anglers even realize what’s happening.

Some places are hard to describe because photos never quite capture what it feels like to stand there in person. Drifting On The Fly’s lodge is one of those places.

Every day presents a different view. Some days the ocean is calm and glassy, reflecting the sky in soft blues and silver light. Other mornings bring rolling clouds moving past snow-covered volcanoes in the distance, creating the kind of scenery that makes you reach for your camera.

Bald eagles are a common sight here. You’ll often spot them soaring above the shoreline, perched high in the trees, or diving toward the water in search of fish. Watching an eagle glide across the backdrop of mountains and ocean is something our guests never forget.
