Fishing on the Kenai and Kasilof Rivers is an adventure in itself—but the river’s greatest surprises often show up between casts. Every trip down any of our rivers provides an opportunity to see wildlife at its best, with each bend in the water offering a chance to witness Alaska at its wildest.
It’s nearly impossible to spend time on the rivers without spotting bald eagles. They perch on treetops and branches, scan the banks for salmon, and occasionally swoop down in a dramatic display of power. Seeing one up close—wings spread wide—is something no photo fully captures.
During heavy salmon runs, it’s not uncommon to see brown bears working the river too. They’re usually focused on the fish, giving anglers plenty of space, but catching a glimpse from a safe distance is a bonus on our guided fishing trips. Watching a bear pluck a salmon from the river is an unforgettable part of your fishing experience.
When the fish move, so does the wildlife. On days when the river is thick with sockeye salmon or when silver salmon flash beneath the surface – the odds of seeing wildlife increase dramatically.
Many rivers offer good fishing, but Kenai Peninsula rivers offer good fishing and a possible wild experience where wildlife becomes part of your storytelling later. Every trip becomes a blend of angling, observing, and appreciation of the environment and experience around you.
