Kenai river Alaska fly fishing

The Kenai river was running much clearer today than the last couple days. Kenai river Alaska fly fishing for rainbow trout and Dolly Varden fishing was very good all day long. I found a few concentrations of bigger fish and was able to land a few of them! 20120830-204826.jpg Jack caught so many fish today that after 8 hours he was laying down on the deck trying to run a drift. It didn’t work so well but he just couldn’t bring himself to quit! 20120830-205039.jpg Everyone caught good fish and they are already in for another week next year. 20120830-210130.jpg This Large dark rainbow trout was caught close to the shore.  I think he was taking a break from the current and hanging in some easier water. 20120830-210153.jpg 20120830-210207.jpg Dolly varden are often caught while fishing for rainbow trout on the kenai river 20120830-210218.jpg Rainbow trout fishing is all catch and release with barbless hooks. This policy is to ensure the future of these beautiful fish. If you are interested in a day out on the water with our company contanct us on our site or give us a call at 907-382-6808. Kenai river silver salmon and rainbow trout fishing

20120828-231015.jpg This mornings kenai river silver salmon and rainbow trout fishing trip was gorgeous!! The 20 minute run up river was as scenic as Alaska is! You can expect anything from fog to rain to snow to any condition in Alaska but this morning was one to praise. It was 39 degrees at the boat launch and crystal clear! It’s trout season! 20120828-231434.jpg 20120828-231451.jpg 20120828-231520.jpg Dustin and “jeff”! decided to purchase an exclusive boat for a couple days and wanted to fish Kenai river rainbow trout and silver salmon (cohoe. We limited fast this morning and had smokes and lunch on my favorite gravel bar on the Kenai river. Every day can’t be limits of salmon but it is Alaska. 20120828-232125.jpg 20120828-232206.jpg On the way back to the boat launch this pair of eagles was worth turning the boat and taking a few pics for. 20120828-232340.jpg 20120828-232349.jpg This afternoons Kenai river rainbow trout trip was great! The Leslie group had been fishing with me for years. We headed up the Kenai river and pulled off a great half day evening trip on the Kenai river. We had 4 hours of great rainbow trout and dolly Varden fishing! They group also witnessed a sow brown bear and two cubs feeding on a gravel bar. These are the same two bears that have been out for the last two evenings. 20120828-232722.jpg 20120828-232736.jpg A good Alaska fall day today! Fall is here but fishing season had just begun. Alaska rainbow trout fishing

20120827-224002.jpg Float planes often cruise the Kenai River and can land in many places.  It is quit an experience to have a float plane buzz you while you are in Alaska rainbow trout fishing. The rainbow trout have moved behind the king salmon and there are fish feeding through out the whole system right now. 20120827-224325.jpg Alaska rainbow trout fishing can be very frustrating if you do not match the hatch.  The hatch being flesh and eggs from the salmon.  When the Rainbows key in on this rich food source you will be hard pressed catching them on any other imitations. The first to spawn are the King salmon.  King salmon eggs are around 9-12 mm in size and vary in color depending on light and time that they have been in the water.   20120827-224509.jpg Often in the fall you can find bears feeding along the gravel bars.  This bear was spotted below rainbow alley on the middle kenai river.  He chased sea gulls and found an easy meal right in front of us while we fished.  I love it when guest that have never seen an Alaska brown bear have the opportunity to hang out with them on the river. Kenai River Rainbow Trout Fishing

Kenai river Rainbow trout fishing today was great but the weather was not so good. Fighting the wind has me all over the place and of course keeping the boat on the right drift is always tricky in the wind..  The group I have had for the last two days chose to work with spinning rods instead of fly rods. They had great success and really enjoyed the days on the water. 20120820-220929.jpg 20120820-221336.jpg 20120820-221402.jpg No matter the style of equipment you choose to use, keeping a good steady pressure is key to landing your catch. 20120820-221418.jpg A solid 24 inch kenai river rainbow trout caught today. 20120820-221540.jpg I look for the rainbow trout fishing to be great all the way until freeze up this year. If you are interested in a day on the water this season or would like to talk about a future trip give us a call at 907-382-6808 or check our website out at drifting on the fly! Off to fish the kasilof river in the morning for silver salmon. Tight lines Scott Sager 20120823-183205.jpg Wayne is eating again,  I think he should fish more!

Kenai river boat launch

20120820-065047.jpg Rigged up and waiting at a kenai river boat launch to go rainbow trout fishing on the Kenai river this morning! Will report back tonight

Kenai river trout fishing

Kenai river Trout fishing was good again today. We didn’t land any huge fish but we did catch a lot. The dolly Varden and rainbow trout fishing should do nothing but get better every day. 20120817-165721.jpg I liked this shirt one of the guest was wearing today. “the whole trout and nothing but the trout so help me cod” ! The Middle Kenai river trout fishing is very good right now and should continue to be good for the rest of the season.  Most seasons The rainbow trout fishing is consistent from the middle of August until freeze up.  There are days that we have to work for fish like anywhere but The Kenai river trout fishing is as good as it gets most of the time.  It always seems to amaze me even though I fish it year in and year out.  Give us a call and we will get you lined up on the kenai river trout fishing during a prime date.  Book early to make sure you get the date that best fits your trip to Alaska’s Kenai peninsula.  Contact us here on the site or by phone. Kenai river rainbow trout fishing

20120808-142451.jpg We were out early this morning for our kenai river rainbow trout fishing trip. Linda and Bill Live in Sterling Alaska and try to fish the Kenai river rainbow trout bite many times a year.  The bite is getting better everyday now, there are days we are landing 50+ fish and some very large fish too.  Here we are drifting the middle kenai river for rainbow trout and dolly Varden that have moved out behind the king salmon. There are some very elaborate private fishing platforms along the Kenai river but this one stands out the most to me! 20120808-142948.jpg I don’t know how many stairs there are to the top but I want to ride the tram that is along side them.  Going up wouldn’t be to bad but coming down all I would think about is doing a belly flop into the full Kenai River!  Whoever built this has to be a character and I would love to sit down and have a beer with them.  I bet you would hear some great stories.  We fish this drift often in August and early September so ask me to point out the stair case to you because i’m sure you will be into your drift more than you are looking for a set of stairs!

Kenai river sockeye salmon and rainbow trout fishing

Kenai river sockeye salmon and rainbow trout fishing trips with Drifting on the Fly’s guide service. Kenai river sockeye salmon and rainbow trout fishing combination trips can be a long day on the water but provide a great experience of the river. Our full day trips are advertised at 8 hours but many days go on a little longer. I met up with one of my Alaska resident fishing groups early to get our waders on and gear ready this morning. The kids eager to get out on the river but the early mornings make them move a little slower. 20120724-203028.jpg Starting out on the lower Kenai river with some sockeye salmon fishing.  The kids had a great time and caught a few salmon but really wanted to go after a big Kenai river rainbow trout. Early in the sockeye salmon run I target fish directly behind cleaning stations and were carcasses tend to pile up. This proved to be where most of the rainbow trout were today! Nothing big but that doesn’t matter when you are catching fish. Good job guys and I’m looking forward to next weekend. 20120724-203906.jpg 20120724-203924.jpg 20120724-203936.jpg Combination trips are great for an all around experience we usually break the trip into two half days, fishing for salmon in the morning and trout in the afternoon.
