View DIRECTIONS TO SPORTSMAN’S LANDING in a larger map Sportsmans landing in Cooper landing Alaska is where the world famous russian river ferry is located.  Each year the Russian River Ferry takes thousands of anglers across the Kenai river to fish for Salmon.  It’s not uncommon to see sightings of numerous bears and eagles fishing along side of anglers.  This is also the start of the Kenai National Wildlife boundry.  It is easy access to launch a drift boat or raft at sportsman’s  boat landing and float just a few miles down stream to Jim’s Landing or on through to the upper Skilak Lake boat Launch. Remember that if you plan on a do it yourself day on through the Kenai river canyon that there is 3 series of class 3 rapids and 8 miles of lake to get across before arriving at the upper skilak lake boat launch. We are only allowed so many starts in this section of river a year so if you want a trip make sure that you book early to reserve your seats. WILLIE PREDATOR POWER BOAT

Drifting on the Fly, LLC proudly added a Willie Predator power boat to the business. The boat is 20 feet long and is 72 inches wide and is powered by a 50 horse power Mercury motor and has a 9.9  horse power Mercury motor for secondary power. Though running a drift boat on the Kenai River for salmon, Dolly Varden and rainbow trout has its place, the power boat has its benefits as well.

The use of a powerboat for rainbow trout fishing on the middle Kenai River is a very effective way to have a chance at big Kenai River rainbow trout. This boat also allows us to easily fish the lower Kenai River for king salmon.  With a 50-horse power engine on the back of the boat running multiple drifts through a hole can be done in no time.

The option to fish for rainbow trout, silver salmon, or sockeye salmon on the middle river in a power boat is now available.  I have owned and run power boats for years and it is nice to finally add one to our guided fishing operation.

We are looking forward to another great fishing season. Booking a guide trip on the kenai river with Drifting on the Fly easy!

Alaska Fly Out rainbow Trout Fishing

Alaska fly out rainbow trout fishing trips are really something to look forward to.  I leave tomorrow on a 7 day adventure in Bristol Bay for trophy rainbow trout and king salmon fishing.  This is a personally designed trip for the HARD CORE, adventurous fisherman that wants to get the most out of there experience.  We will be in state of the art tents, comfortable 18 ft. rafts and eating like kings.  On this adventure we will be floating 72 miles of river, starting in the high country and ending up in dense, forested country near where the Nushagak River starts.  From the wildlife to the fish that haven’t seen a fly in a year or more, we expect to do very well on this trip.  Grayling, rainbow trout, Dolly Varden, chum salmon, king salmon,  and northern pike are all expected to be seen on this trip.  There is lots of planning involved in a trip like this so if you are interested in putting a back country trip of a lifetime together in the bush of Alaska make your plans with our guide service early.  We will only fish up to 6 people on two rafts on our back country trips to ensure a personal trip that you are never going to forget. I will not be able to get back to emails or phone calls until the 25th of June starting tomorrow.  Don’t hesitate to leave a voice mail or send an email if you are inquiring about a trip and I’ll get back to you as soon as I can! mouse-pattern-001 Big Bristol Bay rainbow trout often take mouse patterns viciously in the spring before the salmon show up.  We plan to do very well on patterns such as this one! If your interested in booking a like this or a guide trip on the kenai river give us a call and we’ll work closely with you to make it happen! Kenai peninsula fly fishing trip

anchor river, alaska When on a Kenai peninsula fly fishing trip on small rivers for King Salmon  make sure that you try to spend most of your time in a run that will concentrate fish.  These fish are moving upstream with the tide so moving around the stream can just waste time.  Getting out there ahead of high tide and hang out until the outgoing, this can be the most productive time. Good runs are popular during the peak of the season so staking out your sweet spot in advance is very important. fly fishing the anchor river, alaska The Anchor river can be a very productive fishery but for those early season king salmon you may have to put your time in.  Be patient and maybe you’ll pick up a mid May fish on the Kenai Peninsula! I have seen days where we get a good push of fish that each angler hooks multiple fish.  Once you have decided to harvest a fish you must quit fishing.  If you choose to practice catch and release you can fish as long as you would like.   For more information on a guided king salmon trip on the kenai river or surrounding water contact us here anytime. Shenandoah Valley fly fishing

I had a chance to get home and fly fish in the Shenandoah national park and Shenandoah valley  for a couple of days.  Shenandoah valley fly fishing involves a lot of hiking, wade fishing and or drift boat fishing.  The weather was OK and the fishing was great.  I only had a couple of opportunities to get out with the boys from www.murraysflyshop.com but when I did it was on. va-2009-009There is nothing big about the trout in Shenandoah nation park but native fish that are thousands of years old and readily taking dry flies makes this fishing as fun as any I have ever done.  The beautiful mountain streams can put the most seasoned fishers into a trance. We fished the Rapidan river in Madison county VA on this trip but there are over 50 fish able streams in the park! va-2009-017 Guide John Colman with a nice small mouth on the North Fork of the Shenandoah river.  Though the water temperature was colder than we would have liked the fish still cooperated.  We caught Small mouth bass, Large mouth bass, sunfish and fall fish. If you are interested in taking a fun, fish filled trip in the Shenandoah valley I highly recommend that you check out www.murraysflyshop.com. We are back in AK and start our season here may 16th!  King Salmon fishing should be good and if you are looking for an Alaska vacation for 2009 make sure you check us out at www.driftingonthefly.com Tight lines, Scott sager

KENAI RIVER

The rainbow trout fishing on the Kenai River should be excellent until the end of the month when the river closes. My last trout trip was last week on the middle Kenai river until the opener in June. To those that are able to get out in the next couple of days. Good Luck! artculated-leeches-003 This is one of my favorite early season patterns but Olive Sculpins have been very productive too. We are taking bookings for the Kenai river and other systems in Alaska now.  If you are interested in a great fishing trip and would like more information about it give us a call.  If we are out on the river leave us a message and I will get back to you as soon as I can.  There are many species available on the Kenai river and coordinating with us will allow you to be here during the peak season of whatever species you would like to pursue.  We have both drift boat and power boat opportunities. There are also fly out and wade fishing trips available. For More info on how you can book a guided fishing trip on the kenai river visit Drifting On The Fly, LLC today.

Redoubt Ash

After 7 eruptions Mount Redoubt Ash finally makes its way to Anchorage.  The winds have been very cooperative  thus far keeping most of the ash to the south and west of anchorage. redoubt-ash-on-trucks If you have to drive during any ash fall it is a good idea to put pantyhose over your air filter.  This will help keep harmful dust out of your engine. redoubt-ash We are hanging close to the house tonight and hopefully this little bit of ash fall is all we get.  Get out your dust masks! Redoubt has effected Drift River which is near the volcano.  Drift river is an  anadromous stream, so it will be interesting to see how it effects the returning salmon runs. Tight lines, Scott www.driftingonthefly.com Check out google search AVO for more info on the very active Mount Redoubt.
