Timing your Kenai River Fishing Trip

Timing your Kenai River fishing trip depends on the species that you primarily want to pursue make sure.  For instance if you would like to go after Kenai river sockeye salmon you would want to book you guided trip with us in late July or early august.  There are overlapping peak dates for multiple species as well.  Like king salmon and a sockeye salmon trip can both be booked during the peak season for both species.  This would happen at the end of July.  These dates go fast so book early to insure that you get the dates that you are interested in.   A Tip for Netting a sockeye salmon on the kenai river.  Always net a fish by head first.  This way you have the whole fish in the net and if it makes another run it will run into the net or swim out without pulling the hook. FLY FISHING RAINBOW TROUT ON THE KENAI RIVER

kenai river rainbow troutFly Fishing rainbow trout on the Kenai river can be a great guided trip.  We offer many trips on the Kenai but specialize in finding bit trout on the fly.  Fish like these aren’t landed everyday but are hooked often.  Every once in a while a fish cooperates and an angler does everything right and we are able to put a big fish in the net.

King Salmon are starting to really starting to drop their eggs now and trout fishing the kenai river is heating up.   The Rainbow trout are moving around and finding dinner at the the hottest spawning ground these days. The river should be full of eggs within the next week..!!! Think of any other trout fishing you know and match the hatch except with beads and flesh flies instead of may flies and stone flies.  Just like any fishing pay attention to what’s happening in the stream and you’ll have a more productive day on the water.

Middle Kenai River Fishing

Middle kenai river fishing is very popular.  We chase Rainbow trout, dolly varden, silver salmon and sockeye salmon on this section of river. alaska rainbow trout fishing Rainbow Trout fishing the kenai river is good day here and a so so day there but we look for it to get real good any day. Rainbow trout that are over 25 inches are not uncommon here and 30 inch fish are landed many times throughout the season.  Middle kenai river trout fishing is good in June, August, September and October.  Book a trip on the middle kenai river and then a steelhead fishing trip or two and let us show you a great fishing vacation. KENAI RIVER DRIFT BOAT FISHING

Kenai River Drift Boat Fishing is a great way to pursue King Salmon or any of the species that we fish for.  It is a lot of hard work but the reward in landing a trophy fish with no power is great. Every Monday in June and July the Kenai river is closed to fishing with a motor on board and no sticker-ed guide boats are allowed on the river.  Kenai river drift boat monday is really nice to get out there and fish for King Salmon with no noise, only a  few wakes, and lots of friendly people.  I didn’t have a booked trip today on the Kasilof river so my buddies and I set out early for the last drift boat Monday of the year.  We missed a few fish and lost 2 really big fish (really big) and landed these two chrome King Salmon.  Fishing was good for the most part and the river was a pleasure to be on today! Only 3 more days left in the season. KENAI RIVER KING SALMON FISHING

kenai river king salmon Kenai river king salmon fishing should be something you do on your visit to the kenai peninsula in July!  Many fish are caught every year over 70 pounds and a 50 pound fish in not uncommon.  The Kenai River is big and runs fast in the summer months.  We have power boat so that we can rework the runs and if you prefer to fish out of a drift boat we can accomodate that as well.  Kenai River King Salmon Fishing out of a drift boat is a lot of work but very doable.  We landed this big kenai river king salmon out of my 18 foot Willie drift boat. Today After a day of guiding trout and Sockeye Salmon fishing on the kenai  river my buddy Ben Hancock and Dan Wikner arrived with perfect timing.  We unloaded the guide boat and grabbed the private boat to set out for a short drift on the Kenai between River Quest and Pillars boat launch.  Mid way through my friend hit his first king salmon ever and for sure one to remember! FLY FISHING FOR KING SALMON

Fly fishing for king salmon today and Larry Tumblin hooked up to what turned out to be a 35 lb. King Salmon this Summer. 10 wt. fly rods and sinking lines and heavy leaders did the trick. What was the fly? Stay tuned – I will show you how to tie it this fall, once things slow down.

Fly fishing for king salmon can be one of the most frustrating things to do or it can be fast and furious.  We have spent a few days in search of  king salmon on the fly for a special group from the east coast and finally hit the sweet spot.  The guys have hooked up on quit a few fish but the fish haven’t been playing very fair.  I like to use a 10 weight or bigger for king salmon and more times than not I wish I had a 12 weight.  The fly’s are big and the lines are heavy.  A heavier rod makes for a more comfortable days fishing and when you do have a 35+ pound fish on it gives you that much more back bone to get the fish to shore.  for more information about our alaska fishing guide service contact us here: Contact We are the right guide service for you if you are in search of fly fishing for king salmon Tight lines, Scott Sager

RICH KETTERMAN KING SALMON Guided Kenai River King salmon fishing has been excellent!  The Kenai river produce a few fish for me today but this was the first catch of the day at 7:00 am.  The last two weeks in July have in the past produced some of the best king fishing of the season and I am pumped up to see what happens next.   We’re fishing harder than we should probably but with the potential of fish like this I can’t keep my boat out of the water.  We run full day guided kenai river king salmon fishing tips for 275.00 per person and will put you in the most productive runs that we can.  I personally like to back troll my best running plugs and spinners below soldotna bridge in search of a trophy king salmon.  If you are interested in hunting the largest of the pacific salmon on the kenai river make sure you give us a call. This week proved to be another good week for the Kasilof River for King Salmon fishing.  The Dewey family did some back trolling out of the drift boat on Monday with me and this fish flat out smoked us.  It hit a smaller pink cheater with a little glob of cured eggs.  The river has finally come up to normal level and we have had to start fishing with size 40 jet divers.  This kasilof river is mainly a terminal gear fishery but it is still a drift boat only river which makes for a relaxing day.

DRIFT BOAT FISHING THE KASILOF RIVER

Drift boat fishing the kasilof river today and Tanner Brown caught his first King Salmon.   It was taken July 12 on the Kasilof River with Drifting on the fly guide service.  After releasing a king and a couple more lost opportunities a family of three was happy to make a group effort to land this big fish.  The river fished very good for us today and will only improve until the end of King Salmon season. Drift boat fishing the Kasilof river for King Salmon is a team effort.  Landing a 30-50 pound king salmon or even bigger is a lot of work and when the fish finally comes to the net it will be a very proud moment.  Drift boat fishing is a quiet, relaxing and special way to pursue King salmon.  We offer guided kasilof river trips for Kings in May, June, and July.  If you have any interest in pursuing King salmon or any other species that is offered here on the kenai peninsula give us a call and we will get you lined up today! Kenai River Guide Trip

KENAI RIVER SOCKEYE SALMON

A popular Kenai river guide trip is for Sockeye Salmon, We offer many fishing opportunities in July and August for sockeye salmon.  Some of the best gravel bars are accessible on the middle kenai river.  We fish here almost exclusively during the peak of the sockeye salmon runs. We look for the Sockeye salmon fishing to pick up in the next few days also. Usually by July 14th the fishing is very good.  Limits are 3 per person a day until the escapement is reached and then it is usually bumped up to 6 per person!

Second run king salmon are here.  Fish have been showing up in good numbers now and you should be able to snatch on to a king if you put the time in.  Both the Kenai and Kasilof have fished well for me the last couple of days.  Quick fish worked best on the Kenai river and Spin and glows with a glob of eggs have been best on the Kasilof river for us.
