If you ever loose an anchor and don’t have a spare, improvise by using a rock as a drift boat anchor. This guy said he just prefers a rock anchor over a lead anchor so he uses it all the time!

Today is the Rainbow Trout season opener on the Kenai River, June 11th. Get out your smolt and flesh fly patterns and enjoy some potentially great rainbow trout fishing. This is a great time of year to pursue trout, they are hungry and willing to take traditional flies, which is always a lot of fun. The mouth of the Kenai River from Skilak lake five miles down stream is closed to all motorized vessels until June 15th! This is set into place because of the trumpeter swans that are nesting in the area. Officially Spring on the Kenai Peninsula

The Kenai River Fishing season will be upon us before we know it here in Alaska, though we are getting out once in a while now and hitting our favorite holes on the warmer days. IZAAK WALTON BOAT LAUNCH

Izzak Walton boat launch in located at the moose river bridge in Sterling Alaska. The Izzak walton boat launch and state park has a very nice campground, picnic tables, and outhouses. This is one of my favorite state park facilities located on the Kenai river. The Moose river dumps into the Kenai only a short distance from the boat launch. It is a slow and shallow river and makes it very nice for launching a boat. There is also some great silver salmon fishing here as well when they are running. It is a toss up between meeting here or at bings landing. It usually depends on how busy the boat launch is at bings. If we are headed up river it takes about 15 minutes to pass bings launch up and head on to skilak lake. This is worth it if the wait to launch at bings is very long. Kalifornsky Beach Road Soldotna, AK 99669 Heading South out of Soldotna: *cross the kenai river bridge *at the light take a right on Kalifornsky Beach Rd. *Look for a direct right in to Centennail Park. *If you are headed north make sure that you take a left onto Kalifornsky at the first stoplight you come to in Soldotna. View CENTENNIAL PARK BOAT LAUNCH in a larger map This is a very popular spot to launch your guide boat on the lower Kenai river for a days fishing for King salmon. There is a fee station set up shortly after you enter the park so make sure you stop for that. Along with camping and great gravel bars for fishing the park has picnic areas and of course the boat launch. The Kenai river runs fast in July and Centennial park has a nice back eddie with place to park your boat while you are parking your rig after launching. If you plan on fishing the top half of the lower kenai river this is a great place to launch your boat. Located at the Kenai Lake bridge in Cooper Landing the upper Kenai river boat launch is a great place to access the river. Right at the boat launch is a great place to try an catch a rainbow trout or dolly varden if you do not have access to a boat. Here we will launch the drift boat for a days float trip down the Kenai river to Sportsman’s or Jim’s landing. The time of year varies when we meet at this location. This section of the Kenai river is good fly fishing or spin fishing at times for Rainbow Trout and Dolly Varden. The salmon fishing can be good for the second run of sockeye salmon (Reds) and silver salmon as well. This is a drift only setting so there are no power boats allowed from Kenai Lake down to Skilak lake.
