copy-of-hunting-063.jpgcopy-of-hunting-062.jpgcopy-of-hunting-060.jpg After a long haul we finally have the new willie drift boat stored here in Alaska .  Things are starting to come together for the 2008 Alaska fishing season.  This new drift boat will be used for many seasons on the Kenai Peninsula before we will be due for another one.  Willie drift boats are durable and a very safe boat to fish out of.  We can accommodate up to 4 anglers on this boat.  If you are interested in a Kenai river guide trip this summer you can contact me at www.driftingonthefly.com or email at scott@driftingonthefly.com. Homer King Salmon Derby

copy-of-hunting-069.jpgcopy-of-hunting-068.jpg copy-of-hunting-064.jpg Due to bad weather the winter Homer king salmon derby was delayed until this past sunday.  There were 792 fishermen in the derby and 92 fish caught.  The odds don’t sound very good but there were 20 more fish caught this year than last year.  Boats are lined up along the bluff trolling for the Homer king salmon derby winning fish.  The fishing isn’t fast and furious but what a great place to spend the day on the water.   I fished with some good friends from around the Kenai Peninsula.  We had a great day but ended up with no king salmon on the boat.  It was a great way to get out and spend the day on the water and I highly recommend it to anyone that would like to experience Alaskas fishing.  There is not a lot of fishing going on the Kenai peninsula this early in the spring and it gives us a chance to get out and get a line wet.  If you would like to participate in the Homer king salmon derby contact me at www.driftingonthefly.com and I will get you lined up. Shenandoah smallmouth bass fishing

copy-of-hunting-055.jpgcopy-of-hunting-050.jpg Shenandoah smallmouth bass fishing can be very good in the spring.  The days are getting longer and it seems that you can get a lot more done.  Two  weeks ago I visited my home town of Strasburg, VA for my grandparents 65th wedding anniversary!  It was a very nice but a short visit.  I did get a chance to fish for only a few  hours with the folks at Murrays fly shop (www.murraysflyshop.com).  We fished the north fork of the Shenandoah river throwing leaches with a slow retrieve.  I managed to land a 10-12″ smallmouth and John  landed a solid 12″ fish.  It was nice to get out and see that the fish were willing to play. copy-of-hunting-052.jpg Thanks and there will be more posts this week and a few pictures. Be sure to check out my new website layout at www.driftingonthefly.com to book a trip! Tight lines

DOLLY VARDEN FISHING ON THE KENAI RIVER

kenai-river-guide-scott-sager-dolly-varden.jpg

Dolly Varden fishing on the Kenai River is often off the hook in the spring until the middle of september.  This beautiful fish was caught in the fall right before the Dolly mVarden spawn.  Dolly Varden are in the char family and spawn in the fall.

When you find spawning Sockeye Salmon you’ll be sure to find a Dolly Varden or two behind them.  With clearer water look for the shadows under and behind the salmon.  They can be hard to see sometimes but whenever you approach the stream or river make sure you spend a minute looking before walking right up to the water.  This fish was caught in the middle of September on the Kenai river and is a very good fish. Large 25 inch or bigger Dolly Varden are caught daily on the kenai river when the bite is going off. Guided Dolly Varden fishing on the Kenai River is easily booked with Drifting on the Fly.  Give us a call or email us here and we will get you hooked up on a fishing trip of a lifetime. KENAI RIVER KING SALMON FISHING

copy-of-picture-054.jpg

Kenai river king salmon fishing is  worth the wait! Kenai river King Salmon can be tough to catch and harder to land but with time put in and a little luck it can come together too.  This past year I had the opportunity to have my father in the boat in the first of June.  It is early season and on the first pass we netted this big 51 inch king salmon out of a drift boat with no motor.  Sometimes you can catch a fish right off the bat and other times it can take a day or two.  That’s what keeps us fishing but by Keeping your gear in good shape and always remember to gear up with fresh line.  You never know what will be tugging at the other end. If a Kenai river King salmon fishing guide trip is on your must have list, feel free to contact me and we’ll get you lined up. kenai River King salmon trips are 275.00 per person and we have both drift boat and power boat options for your days fishing. Kenai River Rainbow Trout Fishing

copy-of-41.jpg

Kenai river rainbow trout fishing on the Upper river today.  This young man caught one of the largest upper kenai river rainbow trout that I have landed on my boat. Kids should have all the luck! Landing Big upper kenai river rainbow trout on light tackle or fly is a real treat. The current is swift and there are many obstacles that can end a battle with a big fish quickly. So many times a fish like this will out play the most experience fisher person. A long run a couple of jumps and some good luck and this fish fell to the net and got to pose for the camera.  The Kenai river offers good fishing from the start of the system all the way to the end of the system.  Depending on timing and what is happening on the river will determine which section of river we will pursue.  I often fish the upper kenai river in the fall. Guided kenai river rainbow trout fishing trips cost 275.00 per person for walk and wade, drift boat fishing or power boat fishing. Tight Lines, Scott Sager Drifting On The Fly, LLC
